Zvornik: Encyclopedia II - Zvornik - History

Zvornik is one of the oldest cities in Bosnia, being first mentioned in the year 1410, although it was known as Zvonik ("bell tower") at that time. The town's geographic location has made it an important trade link between Bosnia and the east. For instance, the main road connecting Sarajevo and Belgrade runs through the city. Zvornik has also the distinction of being the only city in Bosnia that directly lies on the border to Serbia. During the Ottoman occupation, Zvornik was the capital of the Zvornik sanjak (an administrative region). This was primarily the case because of the city's crucial role in the economy and the strategic ...

Zvornik: Encyclopedia II - Subdivisions of Bosnia and Herzegovina - Amendments to the divisions

On the grounds that the Dayton Agreement's framework is outdated, many groups have come forth with ways to redevelop the divisions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The agreement was designed to effectively end the war in the nation, but the divisions have made the bureaucracy of the country unwieldy. Generally speaking, the nation's Bosniak population wishes for the state to be centralized, eliminating the Federation, as well as the Republika Srpska. Officials in Republika Srpska vehemently resist this idea. Many Serbs assume that if Kosovo ...

Zvornik: Encyclopedia II - Husein Gradaščević - Biography

Husein Gradaščević - Background and youth. The most widely accepted theory about the origin of the Gradaščević family is that they came to Bosnia from Buda. There they were said to be high-ranking Ottoman officials and soldiers, and even upon their arrival they were already known as wealthy aristocrats. They settled in Bosnian Posavina, as evidenced by an imperial decree that gave them land and military responsibilities in the region. The local peasantry knew them as beys and sepahis, and even ...
