Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - Hernán Cortés - Arrival in the New World

Due to several setbacks, Cortés did not arrive in the New World until 1506. He took part in the conquest of Hispaniola and Cuba and was granted a large estate of land and Indian slaves for his efforts. This was the encomienda that had worked so well in the conquest of the Canaries (eliminating the indigenous Guanches) but would prove devastating in the New World. Expeditions to Yucatán by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba in 1517 and Juan de Grijalva in 1518 had returned to Cuba with small amounts of gold, and tales of a more ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - Hernán Cortés - Relations with the last Aztec emperors

Montezuma had the palace of his father Auítzotl prepared to house the Spanish and their native allies. Cortes asked for more gifts of gold as a vassal of Charles V. He also demanded that the two large idols be removed from the main temple pyramid in the city, the human blood scrubbed off, and shrines to the Virgin Mary and St. Christopher be set up in their place. All his demands were met. Cortés then seized Montezuma in his own palace and made him his prisoner as insurance against Aztec revolt, and demanded an enormous ransom of gold, whi ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - Hernán Cortés - Later life

When Cortés returned to New Spain from Honduras, barely alive, he was greeted with joy by a desperate, lawless population. He served a term as Governor-General of "New Spain of the Ocean Sea" (as Juan de Grijalva had named Mexico before Cortés ever saw it), bringing stability and surprising civil rights to the country. But the Castilian bureaucrats began to arrive, undoing all his work, and he left his eldest and favorite son, La Malinche's child Martín Cortés, with a relatively large fortune, eventually returning to Europe to fight in I ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - History of the world - State

Agriculture led to several major changes. It allowed far larger population densities, which organized themselves into states. There are several definitions used for the term "state." Max Weber and Norbert Elias defined the state as an organization of people that has a monopoly on the legitimate use of force in a particular geographic area. The first states appeared in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia in the late 4th and early 3rd millennia BC. Ancient Egypt began as a state without cities. In Mesopotamia there were several city-states. A state needs an army to impose the legitimate use of forc ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - History of the world - Agriculture

A major change, described by the great prehistorian Vere Gordon Childe as a "revolution," occurred around the 9th millennium BCE with the adoption of agriculture. Although research has tended to concentrate on the Fertile Crescent area of the Middle East, archaeology in the Americas, East Asia and Southeast Asia indicates that agricultural systems using different crops and animals may well have ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - Hernán Cortés - Early life

Cortés was born in Medellín, in the province of Extremadura, in the Kingdom of Castile in Spain in 1485, the only child of Martín Cortés and Catalina Pizarro Altamirano. Through his mother, he was second cousin to Francisco Pizarro, who later conquered the Inca empire of modern-day Peru (not to be confused with another Francisco Pizarro who joined him to conquer the Aztecs). Cortés took classes at Salamanca but bitterly disappointed his parents by returning home in 1501 at age 16, rather than studying law like his grandfather. He had a choice between seeking fame and glory in a war in Italy, or trying his ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - Cannibalism - Modern cannibalism

It is interesting to note that currently the cheapest source of material from which food grade L-cysteine may be purified in high yield is human hair. Its use in food products is widespread worldwide. Some debate that consuming L-cysteine derived from human hair is not actually cannibalism. Some believe cannibalism occurs any time any human body part is intentionally harvested, prepared, and consumed as a food. Few people identify the compulsion to gnaw and bite nails or pieces of skin from fingers as cannibalism, because it is not th ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - 2005 Atlantic hurricane season - Records and notable events

The 2005 season has broken numerous records for tropical cyclone activity. Note that systematic monitoring of the Atlantic for tropical cyclones and disturbances that could become tropical cyclones did not commence until 1944.[30] Before then, storms or depressions that did not approach populated land or shipping lanes, especially those of relatively short duration, could have gone undetected. Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - Antonio López de Santa Anna - Military career

In 1810, the same year that Mexico declared its independence from Spain, the sixteen-year-old joined the Spanish military to the dismay of his father. His commanding officer, Jose Joaquín de Arredondo, taught him much about dealing with rebels. In 1811, Santa Anna was wounded in the arm by a Chichimeca arrow. By 1813, 18-year-old Santa Anna had risen to the rank of first lieutenant. In 1821, he switched sides and declared his loyalty to insurgent leader "El Liberator": Agustín de Iturbide. He rose to prominence by driving the Spanish force ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - Antonio López de Santa Anna - Politics

Santa Anna declared himself retired, "unless my country needs me". He decided he was needed when Anastasio Bustamante led a coup overthrowing and killing President Vicente Guerrero. Santa Anna seized power in the confusion and then was elected President by a easily manipulated public in 1833. At first he had little interest in actually running the country, giving a free hand to his vice-president Valentín Gómez Farías, a liberal reformer. Gómez Farías worked hard to root out corruption, which stepped on some powerful toes among t ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - Mexico - The name

Mexico is named after its capital city, whose name comes from the Aztec city Mexico-Tenochtitlan that preceded it. The Mexi part of the name is from Mexitli, the war god, whose name was derived from metztli (the moon) and xictli (navel) and thus meant "navel (probably implying 'child') of the moon". So, Mexico is the home of the people of Mexitli (the Mexicas), co meaning "pla ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - Quetzalcoatl - Antecedents

The name "Quetzalcoatl" literally means quetzal-bird snake or serpent with feathers (Amphitere) of the Quetzal (which implies something divine or precious) in the Nahuatl language. The meaning of his local name in other Mesoamerican languages is similar. The Maya knew him as Kukulkán; the Quiché as Gukumatz. The Feathered Serpent deity was important in art and religion in most of Mesoamerica for close to 2,000 years, from the Pre-Classic era until the Spanish conquest. Civilizations worshiping the Feathered Serpent included the Olmec, the Mixtec, the Toltec, the Aztec(who adopted it fr ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - Quetzalcoatl - Moctezuma Controversy

It is generally accepted that the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II initially believed the landing of Hernán Cortés in 1519 to be Quetzalcoatl's return. This has debated by historian Victor Frank. He points that the Quetzalcoatl-Cortés conncetion is asserted in no documents created independent of post-Conquest Spanish influence, and there is little proof of a pre-Hispanic belief in Quetzalcoatl's return. Most documents expounding this theory are of entirely Spanish origin, such as Cortés's letters to Charles V of Spain, in which Cortés goes to great pains to present the naïve gullibility of the Mexic ...

Forecasts of hurricane activity are issued before each hurricane season by noted hurricane expert Dr. William M. Gray and his associates at Colorado State University, and separately by forecasters with the U.S. Government's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Dr. Gray's team defines the average number of storms per season (1950 to 2000) as 9.6 tropical storms, 5.9 hurricanes, and 2.3 hurricanes reaching or exceeding Category 3 strength. A normal season, as defined by NOAA, has 6 to 14 named storms, with 4 to 8 of those reaching hurricane strength, and 1 to 3 reaching or ...

Yucatán: Encyclopedia II - 2005 Atlantic hurricane season - Season summary

The season began very quickly, with seven tropical storms and two major hurricanes forming before August, setting numerous records for number and strength of storms. The season ended up breaking 16 records for earliest forming storms; for example, the fifth storm of the season, Emily, formed on July 11, well before any other fifth storm in a season. The trend did not let up, and more storms formed in October than any other month in the year, even though the hurricane season traditionally peaks in September.
