Xenoglossia: Encyclopedia - Glossolalia

Glossolalia (from the Greek, "γλώσσα" (glossa), tongue and "λαλώ" (lalô), to speak) comprises the utterance of what appears (to the casual listener) either as an unknown foreign language (xenoglossia), simply nonsense syllables, or utterance of an unknown mystical language; the utterances sometimes occur as part of religious worship (religious glossolalia). Skeptics dismiss these cases as simply being in a state of trance, self-hypnotism or religious ecstasy. It is notable that in Charismatic/Pentecosta ...

Xenoglossia: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Xenoglossia

Xenoglossia

The ability to speak in an unlearned and unheard foreign language. It is associated with past-life recall, states of trance or hypnosis and mediumship.

The phenomenon is very rare. Many so-called instances turn out to be cases where the foreign language has been learned at some stage and then forgotten. When xenoglossia does occur, cases where individuals recite foreign words and phrases without understanding their meaning are far more common than cases where an individual can actually converse intelligently in the supposedly unknown language.

Xenoglossia: Encyclopedia - Criticisms of Charismatic and Pentecostal belief

Charismatic is an umbrella term used to describe Christians who believe that the manifestations of the Holy Spirit seen in the first century Christian Church, such as glossolalia, healing and miracles, are available to contemporary Christians and ought to be experienced and practised today. The word charismatic is derived from the Greek word charis (meaning a grace or a gift) which is the term used in the Bible to des ...

See also: Cambridge Declaration A number of critics of Pentecostal / Charismatic beliefs have established themselves in Discernment Ministries to promote their theological viewpoints. The main areas of criticism are outlined below. Please note that the use of the term Evangelical here refers to those Christians who claim to be Born-again but do not hold to many Pentecostal or Charismatic beliefs, rather than the broader common definition. These Evangelicals are likely to come from a Reformed or Dispensationalist point of view. ...

Xenoglossia: Encyclopedia II - Glossolalia - Christian view of speaking in tongues

Certain Christians (see below) regard the act of speaking in tongues, as a gift of God through the Holy Spirit. As described in the Book of Acts and 1 Corinthians, it is one of holy Gifts of the Spirit given by God to the faithful on the Day of Pentecost. Other religious faiths also incorporate glossolalia as a component of worship traditions. From the Christian point of view, "glossolalia" is an incorrect term from contemporary language of empirical classification (or neologism) to describe an experience in which human ...

Xenoglossia: Encyclopedia II - Glossolalia - Non-Christian glossolalia

Aside from Christians, certain religious groups also have been observed to practice some form of theopneustic glossolalia. Glossolalia is evident in the renowned ancient Oracle of Delphi, whereby a priestess of the god Apollo (called a sibyl) speaks in strange utterances, supposedly through the spirit of Apollo in her, but possibly related to high levels of natural gas present in spring waters beneath the temple. Certain Gnostic magical texts from the Roman period have written on them nonsense syllables like "t t t t t t t t n n n n n n n n n d d d d d d d..." etc. It is believed that these may be transli ...

Xenoglossia: Encyclopedia II - Glossolalia - Linguistic view

From a linguistic point of view, the syllables that make up instances of glossolalia typically appear to be unpatterned reorganizations of phonemes from the primary language of the person uttering the syllables; thus, the glossolalia of people from Russia, Britain, and Brazil all sound quite different from each other, but vaguely resemble the Russian, English, and Portuguese languages, respectively. Many linguists generally regard most glossolalia as lacking any ...

Xenoglossia: Encyclopedia II - Criticisms of Charismatic and Pentecostal belief - The nature of criticism

Pentecostal and Charismatic Christians and organizations have, either fairly or unfairly, been subjected to numerous criticisms by both those within the Christian faith, as well as by those in the wider world. The debate between Charismatic and non-Charismatic Christians occurs at several levels. One fundamendal theological question is usually whether the charismata described in the New Testament and apparently widely used by Jesus, the Apostles and early church leaders were a special dispensation for New Testament times only, ...
