Xebec: Encyclopedia II - Trimaran - Safety

Overall, trimarans are much safer than a monohull as the lack of a heavy keel, combined with the two (usually sealed) amas makes for a nearly unsinkable boat. Because of their stability and safety, trimarans such as the Challenger class have become popular with sailors who have restricted mobility. Potential buyers of trimarans should look for one that is designed with amas with multiple sealed partitions, controls that all run to the cockpit, a collision bulkhead, partial or full cockpit coverings or windshields, and drain holes in the cockpit that can adequately drain the c ...

Xebec: Encyclopedia II - Dinghy - Propulsion

Conventional dinghies are powered by rowing with one set of oarlocks for each thwart (seat). In some models, sliding thwarts allow far more powerful rowing while in others, a removable thwart can permit standing rowing. A set of sculling oars can substitute for several oars on a dinghy normally powered by sweep-oars. Another popular, albeit more expensive, option is an outboard motor with between 1 and 10 horsepower per meter of length depending on the speed desired. Engines always swing up so the dinghy can be grounded without damage and th ...

Xebec: Encyclopedia II - Proa - History of the proa

The proa was, into the 20th century, one of the fastest sailing craft in existence. Indeed, the proa still forms the basis for the design of many boats involved in speed sailing. There has recently been a resurgence in interest in the proa in the Marshall Islands, one of the locations the craft were traditionally built. There is also a loose group of individuals from all over the world with an interest in the proa, both from a historical perspective and from a scientific and engineering perspective. Many of these individuals with interests in proas can be ...

Xebec: Encyclopedia II - Dinghy - Space Issues

On yachts shorter than 10 m there is not enough room for a reasonably sized dinghy and yet there is a genuine need for one. Because anchorage is much less expensive than a dock or slip space, owners of small yachts compromise by carrying a small rigid dinghy or deflated inflatable, or by towing a larger dinghy. Dinghies are sometimes used as lifeboats, but, unless carefully planned, such a use may be unsafe since the boat must be reserved for people. Any extra equipment can be stored in containe ...

Xebec: Encyclopedia II - Trimaran - Construction

Trimarans have a number of advantages over comparable monohulls (conventional, single-hulled sailboats). Given two boats of the same length, the trimaran has a shallower draft, a wider beam, less hull area, and is able to fly more sail area. In addition, because of the wide beam, trimarans do not need the weighted keel required in monohulls. As a result, the trimaran offers much better straight-line performance than a monohull, is able to sail in shallower water, and maintains its stability in stronger winds. However, its wider beam makes it ...

Xebec: Encyclopedia II - Catamaran - Mega Catamarans

One of the biggest developments over the last decade in the yachting arena has been the rise of the super catamaran - a multihull over 60 feet in length which come in semi-custom and custom designs. Various international manufacturers are leading the way in this area including Yapluka, Sunreef, Lagoon and Privilege. A catamaran over 145 feet in length is reportedly under construction on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. The emergence of the super or mega catamaran is a relatively new event which is akin to the rise of the mega or super yacht which was used to describe the huge growth in luxury, large motor yac ...
