Xavier Zubiri: Encyclopedia II - Xavier Zubiri - Zubiri's critique of classical metaphysics

Probably the most innovative aspect of Zubiri's metaphysical system is his critique of classical metaphysics, and particularly of the notion of reality as "subject" in the Aristotelian sense, that is, a reality that is somehow autonomous apart from its context. Zubiri reconceives reality as an interconnected structure of "notes", which structure is "in its own right" to a certain degree (a property Zubiri refers to as "substantivity", in contrast with the classical notion of "substantiality"). The notes themselves are reality's ways of "givi ...

Xavier Zubiri: Encyclopedia II - José Ortega y Gasset - Philosophy

José Ortega y Gasset - Circunstancia. For Ortega y Gasset, philosophy has a critical duty to lay siege to beliefs in order to promote new ideas and to explain reality. In order to accomplish such task the philosopher must, as Husserl proposed, leave behind prejudices and previously existing beliefs and investigate the essential reality of the universe. Ortega proposes that philosophy must, as Hegel proposed, overcome both the lack of idealism (in which reality gravitated around the ego) and ancient-medieval real ...

Xavier Zubiri: Encyclopedia II - Ignacio Ellacuría - Ellacuría's philosophy

Ellacuría's philosophy takes as a starting point Xavier Zubiri's (1898-1983) critique of Western philosophy. For Zubiri, ever since Parmenides, Western thought separated sensing from intelligence. This error led to two results. The first one was what Zubiri called “the logification of intelligence” and the second one was what he called “the entification of reality”. The “logification of intelligence” implied that intellect was reduced to logos (Greek for word/thought). This view led philosophers to believe that what they called "Being" was the cause of reality, and this ...

Xavier Zubiri: Encyclopedia II - Martin Heidegger - Philosophy

Martin Heidegger - Being and Time. Heidegger's most important work is the dense and challenging Being and Time (German Sein und Zeit, 1927). Although the book as published represents only a third of the total project outlined in its introduction, it marked a turning point in continental philosophy. It has been massively influential and remains one of the most discussed works of 20th century philosophy; many subsequent philosophical views and approaches, such as existentialism and deconstruction, have bee ...

Xavier Zubiri: Encyclopedia II - Ignacio Ellacuría - Ellacuría's Idea of a University

Ellacuría was aware of the challenges implied in relating theology with science. However he managed to articulate a relationship bewteen the two in his vision of a university that served the purpose of liberating the oppressed. According to Ellacuría, there are two aspects to every university. The most evident one is that it deals with culture; or in other words knowledge and the use of the intellect. The second, and not so evident, is that it must be concerned with the social reality, precisely because a university is inescapably a soci ...

Xavier Zubiri: Encyclopedia II - Martin Heidegger - Heidegger and Nazi Germany

Heidegger joined the Nazi Party on May 1, 1933, before being appointed the rector of the university in Freiburg. He resigned from the rectorship in April 1934. During this time Heidegger's former teacher Husserl, who was Jewish, was denied the use of the university library at Freiburg because of the racial cleansing laws issued by the Nazi Party. Heidegger also removed the dedication to Husserl from Being and Time when it was reissued in 1941. Heidegger later claimed that this was due to pressure from his publisher, Max Niemeyer. Addi ...

Xavier Zubiri: Encyclopedia II - Ignacio Ellacuría - Ellacuría's Theology

As many other theologians of his generation, Ellacuría intended to construct a new theology, which he called a Historical Theology. His view of history followed the Hegelian dialectic tradition that culminated in Marx's historical materialism. However, Ellacuría rejected Marx's view of human beings as objects of their material conditions. He stressed the importance of conscience, human praxis and its possibilities for influencing the course of history and thereby material conditions themselves. He has been unfairly accused of trying to con ...

Xavier Zubiri: Encyclopedia II - Martin Heidegger - Early life and education

Heidegger was born to a rural family in Meßkirch, Germany, and raised to be a clergyman. He was influenced as a teenager by Aristotle mediated through Christian theology. The concept of being, in this traditional sense, dating back to Plato, was his first exposure to an idea he would plant at the core of his most famous work Being and Time (1927). His family was not wealthy enough to send him to university and he required a scholarship, which itself required he study for the religious order. Mathematics was also his early major. Duri ...
