Worldly: One needs maturity to simply sit quietly

To seek the Divine within, is it necessary to withdraw from worldly affairs/ Does it not imply running away from one's responsibilities?

It all depends on what it is that you are calling worldly affairs. What kind of worldly affairs you want to do is your choice.... Somebody is in politics, somebody is just a clerk in an office, somebody is running a whole industry and somebody is just sweeping the floors. All of them are doing worldly affairs. So you cannot really withdraw from worldly affairs.

Worldly: Encyclopedia - Asceticism

Asceticism denotes a life which is characterized by refraining from worldly pleasures (austerity). Those who practice ascetic lifestyles often perceive their practices as virtuous and pursue them to achieve greater spirituality. Many ascetics believe the action of purifying the body helps to purify the soul, and thus obtain a greater connection with the Divine. In a more cynical context, ascetic may connote some form of self-mortification, ritual punishment of the body or harsh renunciation of pleasure. However the word certain ...

Worldly: Encyclopedia - Great Apostasy

The Great Apostasy is a term of opprobrium used by some religious groups to allege a general fallen state of traditional Christianity, or especially of Catholicism, reformist Protestantism and (often merely by implication) Eastern Orthodoxy: that it is not representative of the faith founded by Jesus and promulgated through his twelve Apostles. This view is not shared by the churches so accused. Great Apostasy - Overview. Most significant non-Catholic and non-Orthodox Christian denominations have for ...

Worldly: Encyclopedia II - Hubertus - His worldly career

Hubert was the eldest son and apparent heir of Bertrand or Boggis, duke of Aquitaine, and grandson of Charibert II, the Merovingian king at Toulouse. Bertrand's wife is variously given in hagiographies as Hugbern, and as Afre, and sister of Saint Oda or perhaps Oda herself, a mark of the low rating accorded women in Merovingian culture, where kings fathered heirs upon peasant women. Modern genealogy often lists Aude or Ode as a wife o ...

Worldly: Encyclopedia II - Secularity - Secularity as relative worldliness

The Christian doctrine that God exists outside of time led medieval Western culture to use secular to indicate movement away from religious affairs and toward worldly (or time-related) ones. This has been extended to apply relative to all religious or spritual beliefs, whether or not they include a similar doctrine. Examples of secular used in religious contexts include: Secular authority, which involves legal and military authority as opposed to clerical authority, or matters the church controls.See also:

Worldly: Encyclopedia II - Asceticism - Worldly vs Otherworldly

Max Weber made a distinction between innerweltliche and ausserweltliche asceticism, which means (roughly) "inside the world" and "outside the world". Talcott Parsons translated these as "worldly" and "otherworldly" (some translators use "inner-worldly", but that has a different connotation in English and is probably not what Weber had in mind). "Otherworldly" asceticism refers to people who withdraw from the world in order to live an ascetic life (this includes monks who live communally in monasteries, as well as hermits who live alone). "Worldly" asceticism refers to people who ...

Worldly: Encyclopedia II - Ambrose - Worldly career

Ambrose was a citizen of Rome, born about 337–340 in Trier, Germany, into a Christian family. His father was prefect of Gallia Narbonensis, his mother was a woman of intellect and piety. There is a legend that as an infant, a swarm of bees settled on his face while he lay in his cradle, leaving behind a drop of honey. His father considered this a sign of his future eloquence and honeyed-tongue. For this reason, bees and beehi ...

Worldly: Encyclopedia II - Rococo - Rococo worldliness and the Roman Catholic Church

A critical view of the unsuitable nature of Rococo in ecclesiastical contexts was taken up by the Catholic Encyclopedia: "For the church the Rococo style may be, generally speaking, compared with worldly church music. Its lack of simplicity, earnestness, and repose is evident, while its obtrusive artificiality, unnaturalness, and triviality have a distracting effect. Its softness and prettiness likewise do not become the house of God. However, shorn of its most grievous outgrowths, it may have been less distracting during its p ...

Worldly: Encyclopedia II - Secularity - Secular trend

In numerical descriptions, such as of a time series of numbers, a secular trend is the long-term upward or downward trend in the numbers, as opposed to a smaller cyclical variation with a periodic and short-term duration. For example, in the business operating cycle, revenue might fluctuate during the fiscal year. Experienced management could ignore the cyclical fluctuation in revenue and concentrate instead on the larger trend from year to ...

Worldly: Encyclopedia II - Hubertus - His Christian career

Be that as it may, Hubert set out immediately for Tongeren Maastricht, for there Lambert was bishop. Saint Lambert received Hubert kindly, and became his spiritual director. Hubert now renounced all his very considerable honors, and gave up his birthright to the Aquitaine to his younger brother Eudo "the Great", whom he made guardian of his infant son, Floribert. Having distributed all his personal wealth among the poor, he studied for the priesthood, was soon ordained, and shortly afterwards became one of St. Lambert's chief associates in t ...

Worldly: Encyclopedia II - Asceticism - Etymology

The adjective "ascetic" derives from the ancient Greek term askesis (practice, training or exercise). Originally associated with any form of disciplined practice, the term ascetic has come to mean anyone who practices a renunciation of worldly pursuits to achieve higher intellectual, emotional, or spiritual goals. Many warriors and athletes, in Greek society, applied the discipline of askesis to attain optimal bodily fitness and grace. The manner of life, the doctrine, or principles of someone who engages in askesis< ...

Worldly: Encyclopedia II - Rococo - Rococo in Different Artistic Modes

Rococo - Furniture and Decorative Objects. The lighthearted themes and intricate designs of Rococo presented themselves best on a smaller scale than the imposing Baroque architecture and sculpture. It is not surprising, then, that French Rococo art was at home indoors. Metalwork, porcelain figures, and especially furniture rose to new pre-eminence as the French upper class ...
