William Christopher: Encyclopedia - Colonel Potter

Colonel Sherman T. Potter was a fictional character from the M*A*S*H television show. He was portrayed by Harry Morgan. At the end of the show's third season, McLean Stevenson had left the series, and his character of Henry Blake died on his way home. The producers wanted a different type of commanding officer for the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH). They decided on a man who had made a career out of the US Army—what was called in the show as regular army, and was close to retirement. In a book on the telev ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia - Wesleyan University

Wesleyan University founded in 1831, is a private, liberal arts university in Middletown, Connecticut. Founded by Methodist leaders and residents of Middletown, the now-secular university was the first college or university to be named after John Wesley, the founder of Methodism and it shares a common Methodist heritage with about twenty other U.S. colleges and universities also named after Wesley. With a class size of slightly over 700, Wesleyan accepts just 28% (class of 2008) of those who apply, making it one of the most sel ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia II - Spin-off - Media

The process of deriving new radio or television programs from existing ones is also referred to as spinning off (see list of television spin-offs). Spin-offs work with varying degrees of success. Some become very popular and last for a number of seasons, others are not well received and have considerably shorter life spans. This phenomenon was already established in radio before the advent of commercial broadcast television, for example The Great Gildersleeve was a spin-off of Fibber McGee and Molly. The Great Guildersleeve might even have been the very first spin-off, when the popular character from Fibber McGee and ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia II - AfterMASH - Other facts

The only other regular character from the original series to appear on AfterMASH was Radar (Gary Burghoff), who appeared in a two-part episode shortly before the show's cancellation. The same character was also the star of a pilot called W*A*L*T*E*R, in which Radar moved from Iowa to St. Louis and became a cop. (The series was never picked up.) Edward Winter also appeared in one AfterMASH episode as Colonel Flagg. AfterMASH premiered in the fall of 1983 in the same time slot as another newcoming series call ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia II - Colonel Potter - CO of the 4077th

After Colonel Blake left the 4077th MASH, Colonel Potter was assigned to the unit as the CO. As he would later tell Klinger, the first few days were "a mite uneasy" and that "no one was jumping for joy" over his arrival. Initially, Hawkeye and BJ feared having a "regular army" man in charge, which they felt was even worse than having Frank in charge - with Frank at least they stood a chance of outwitting him. They also feared about Potter being rusty having not done any recent surgery. However, despite it being several years since having performed an ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia II - M*A*S*H TV series - Synopsis

A letter to TV Guide written by a former M*A*S*H doctor in about 1973 stated that the most insane jokes and idiotic pranks on the show were the most true to life, including Klinger's crossdressing. The hellish reality of the M*A*S*H units encouraged this behavior out of a desperate need for something to laugh at. (Another former M*A*S*Her, though, pointed out later that a habitual crossdresser wouldn't last long ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia II - Wesleyan University - Astronomy

The Van Vleck Observatory, built in 1914, sits atop Foss Hill near the center of the Wesleyan campus. According to the department's web site, "The telescopes are used for research-based observing programs and sky watching events open to Wesleyan students and the general public." [9] The university owns three telescopes. A 16-inch, and a 20-inch are both used for weekly public observing nights, open to the Wesleyan community and the general public. T ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia II - Spin-off - Corporate Spinoffs

Many times in the business world, companies "spin off" their operations. For example, a company that makes ice cream and makes cars might split up into a company that makes cars, and a company that makes ice cream. The current owners (the shareholders) of the company would own stock in both the company that makes cars, and the company that makes ice cream. The primary and nearly exclusive reason why this is done is due to the phenonemon of stock valuation. People who buy stock make money in two different ways, via dividends, and via s ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia II - Wesleyan University - History

Wesleyan was founded as an all-male Methodist college in 1831. In 1872 it became one of the first universities to attempt a coeducational environment, allowing a small number of female students to attend the university, a venture known as the "Wesleyan Experiment". Many of Wesleyan's male alumni believed that coeducation lowered Wesleyan's standings compared to its academic peers, so from 1912 to 1970, Wesleyan returned to being an all-male university. By the time the university began reintegrating women in 1970, many female scholars had already found their place at the all-female Connecticut College in nearby ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia II - Colonel Potter - History Prior to the 4077th

A Methodist, Sherman Potter was from Hannibal, Missouri, the childhood home of Mark Twain. (Two early episodes mention a home in Nebraska, however, and Potter implies in another episode that he's a Presbyterian.) He learned (among other things) Army foot care from a fellow Missourian–future President Harry S Truman. Potter also reveals early on that he's one-quarter Cherokee, when Frank Burns complains that Hawkeye "always gets the Cowboys (friendly troops), while I get stuck with the Indians (North Koreans and Chinese)!", whic ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia II - M*A*S*H TV series - Change in tone

As the series progressed, it made a significant shift from pure comedy to become far more dramatically focused. In addition, the episodes became more political, often appearing to "preach" to its viewers. This has generally been connected with Alan Alda taking a more involved role in production, and many of the episodes in which this change is particularly notable were written and/or directed by Alda. Another significant factor was the change in the cast, as Henry Blake, Trapper John, Frank Burns, and Radar gradually left the show. Still another change as the series progressed was a greater focus on the supp ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia II - Colonel Potter - Background

Col. Potter was both an excellent surgeon and leader. He led mainly by example, always doing his best and encouraging others to do the same. He was at times willing to ignore the letter of regulations in order to abide by its spirit. Usually easygoing, he enjoyed playing the occasional practical joke on others in his unit, Potter understood the hellish realities of life in a MASH unit, and the need for jokes, pranks and recreation to boost morale. At the same time, however, Potter did not suffer fools gladly; he still tended to be more stern ...

William Christopher: Encyclopedia II - Wesleyan University - Recent Activism

2004 has seen a resurgence in activism at Wesleyan, after several years of decline. In December, over 250 students took over South College, the building housing President Douglas Bennett's office, to protest the lack of student voices in administrative decision making. The building occupation was followed by a forum the next day, in which President Bennett promised to respond to student demands in January 2005. See also:
