Wiccan: Encyclopedia - Wiccan Church

Wiccan Churches are often formed from hive covens. Each coven in the hive comes together to form a church, and often creates a fixed location for a covenstead. Much like a Christian church, a Wiccan Church will organize rituals as well as community events. Forming a Church also gives High Priests or Priestesses a much better chance of legally becoming clergy. Many Wiccan and Pagan organizations have chosen to achieve formal legal status by becoming non-profit corporations within their states or provinces, and sometimes t ...

Wiccan: Encyclopedia - Rule of Three Wiccan

The rule of three (or threefold law) is a common tenet in Wicca. It states that both the good and the evil that one creates in the world will be returned threefold (in joy or suffering). It is therefore seen as a pragmatic reason for ethical behaviour and compliance with the Wiccan Rede. The rule of three was first descriped in print in an article by Raymond Buckland (see timeline for law of return concepts), and does not appear in the traditional Book of Shadows. Some Wiccans do not hold it as a tenet, and fee ...

Wiccan: Encyclopedia - Wiccan Rede

The Wiccan Rede is a saying that sums up the ethics of the neo-Pagan religion Wicca. The most common form of the rede is An it harm none, do what ye will. "Rede" is a word from Middle English meaning "advice" or "counsel". "An" is an archaic contraction of the word "and", meaning "if", as in the Shakespearian "an it please thee". Other variants include: An it harm none, do as thou wilt Do what you will, so long as it harms none An it harm none, do what thou will Including:

Wiccan: Encyclopedia - Alex Sanders Wiccan

Alex Sanders (June 6, 1926 - April 30, 1988), born Orrell Alexander Carter, was the founder of the Alexandrian tradition of Wicca. Sanders' first contact with Gardenerian Wicca was in the early 1960s, through correspondence and meetings with with Patricia Crowther. In September 1962, he succeeded in convincing the Manchester Evening News to run a front-page article on Wicca. Billy Kaplan is the eldest of three sons born to cardiologist Jeff Kaplan and psychologist Rebecca Kaplan. He was one of the Young Avengers chosen as a result of the Vision's plan for the reformation of the Avengers, in the event the team ever disbanded. He chose the name Asgardian, possibly in honour of the Avenger Thor. The full extent of his powers are unknown, though they include flight and lightning generation. In Young Avengers #5, it is revealed that he can cast spells using a technique learned from "self-help books" owned by fellow Young Avenger Hulking's mother. Whether this was a play on w ...

Wiccan: Encyclopedia II - Wiccan Rede - History

The combination of Wicca with no harm to others and do what thou wilt made its first known appearance in The Old Laws by Gerald Gardner, 1953. A similar phrase, Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law, appears in Aleister Crowley's works by 1904, in The Book of the Law (though as used by Crowley it is half of a statement and response, the response being "Love is the Law, love under Will). The rede in its best known form was used by Doreen Valiente in several writings. In the form of the "eight words" coupl ...

Wiccan: Encyclopedia II - Wiccan Rede - Interpretations of the Rede

The Rede is seen by both Wiccans and outside observers as very similar to the Golden Rule, a belief that is found in nearly every religion. It should be noted that, while the Golden Rule forbids harm subjectively, the Wiccan Rede does not forbid anything. There is some debate in the neo-Pagan and Wiccan communities as to the meaning of the rede. The debate centers around the concept of the rede being advice (from the meaning of rede) not a commandment, as well as the fact that actions which do harm are not discussed in the rede ...
