Western Region: Encyclopedia - British Rail

British Railways (BR), later rebranded as British Rail, ran the British railway system from the nationalisation of the 'Big Four' British railway companies in 1948 until its privatisation in stages between 1994 and 1997. This period saw massive changes in the nature of the railway network: steam traction was eliminated in favour of diesel and electric power, passengers replaced freight as the main source of business, and the network was severely rationalised. Western Region: Encyclopedia II - BR standard class 4 4-6-0 - Background

The class 4s were designed for mixed traffic use on secondary routes that the class 5s were too heavy for. It was essentially a tender version of the standard 4 2-6-4T, with similar characteristics to the GWR Manor Class, though unlike the Manors they were built to the universal loading gauge. Design work was done at Brighton, with help from Swindon, Derby and Doncaster. ...

Western Region: Encyclopedia II - History of rail transport in Great Britain - Railed roads and tramways 1676 to 1825

History of rail transport in Great Britain - Early rails. As early as 1676 railed roads were in use in Northumberland to ease the conveyance of coal from the mines to the banks of the river at Newcastle-on-Tyne. These were simply straight and parallel rails of timber on which carts with rollers drawn by horses enabled several wagons to be moved simultaneously. Called tramroads (the early coal wagons were called drams), these primitive rails were superseded in 1793 when the then superintendent of the ...

Western Region: Encyclopedia II - BR standard class 4 tank - Design and construction

On the decision to build the BR standards, a standard class of class four tank engines was ordered, based on the ex-LMS Fairburn 2-6-4T with some modifications. The Fairburn tanks themselves had been based on the LMS Stanier 2-6-4T which in turn had been based on the LMS Fowler 2-6-4T. Design work was done at Brighton, the overall programme being overseen by R.A. Riddles. The principal modifications to the Fairburn design involved the reduction of their envelope to enable them to fit into the L1 loading gauge. To do this, the tanks an ...

They were developed for the Western Region, which preferred hydraulic transmission. 101 of this class were built between 1961 and 1964. Withdrawal from service began in 1971, and by 1975 all had been withdrawn. Their early withdrawal was caused, primarily, by issues concerning the non-standard hydraulic transmission. The builder, Beyer Peacock (Hymec) Ltd, was a joint vernture between Bristol Siddeley Engines (BSE) (licenced to build Maybach engines), Stone-Platt Indusries (licenced to build Mekydro transmis ...

Western Region: Encyclopedia II - British Rail Class 52 - The Diesel-hydraulic experiment

When switching to diesel traction, as part of the Modernisation Plan of the 1950s, BR designed and commissioned designs for a large number of locomotive types. At this time (and arguably right up until Sectorisation in the 1980s), BR's regions had a high degree of autonomy, which extended as far as classes of locomotives ordered, and even the design criteria for those locomotives. Whilst almost all other diesel locomotives were diesel-electric, the Western Region employed a policy of utilising diesel-hydraulic traction, commissioning three classes of main lin ...

Western Region: Encyclopedia II - British Rail Class 42 - Service

The D800s were originally intended for the Paddington-Birmingham route and tests proved that their extra weight and power allowed them to run to a two hour schedule with 368 tons in tow: one coach more than a Class 40 could manage. These plans were put back when Paddington became the temporary London terminus of choice for Birmingham during the early 1960s, whilst BR's preferred route from Euston via Rugby was electrified. Loads of greater than 370 tons would be required and the service remained steam-hauled until the advent of the more powe ...

Western Region: Encyclopedia II - Advanced Passenger Train - Background

In the mid 20th century, British Rail express services were being compared unfavourably, and perhaps unfairly, with France's TGV and Japan's Shinkansen. Experience with High Speed Trains on the East Coast Main Line from London to Edinburgh had shown that reduced journey times could produce a significant increase in passenger numbers, but that line was largely straight and suited to high speeds. Other lines, such as the West Coast Main Line from London to Glasgow, were not straight enough to support high speeds with conventional equipment. La ...

Western Region: Encyclopedia II - Lickey Incline - History and geography

It is part of the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway, surveyed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1832, who chose a route well to the east. William Moorsom, who had been the engineer (along with the Jessops) for the Cromford and High Peak Railway, was asked to take over, with his remuneration linked to the savings he achieved. At the time, most railways were for difficult terrain between canals, and the use of cable assistance would not have seemed unreasonable. (When Brunel, for instance, first surveyed the ...

Western Region: Encyclopedia II - History of rail transport in Great Britain - The development of the railways 1825 to 1923

Two railways were the pioneers in railway development in England. History of rail transport in Great Britain - Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The next successful venture was the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR). It is the one which is now considered to be the first true railway, in that it was specifically laid for use by steam locomotives, with cuttings and embankments, rather than using ropes to overcome gradients. It had been a project proposed several years before the S&DR, but ...

Western Region: Encyclopedia II - History of rail transport in Great Britain - Railway Mania

Although the Government was in favour of the development of trunk railways to stimulate economic recovery (in which they were tremendously successful) and to facilitate the movement of troops in times of potential civil unrest, it was legally necessary that each line was authorised by a separate Act of Parliament. While there were entrepreneurs with the vision of an intercity network of lines, such as the Early East Midlands railway schemes, it was much easier to find investors in shorter st ...

The financial success of these lines was beyond all expectations and interests in London and Birmingham soon planned to build two lines to link these cities with each other and with the L&M. These two lines were the London and Birmingham, designed by Robert Stephenson, which ran from Euston Square, London, to Curzon Street, Birmingham, and the Grand Junction, engineered by Joseph Locke, which ran from Curzon Street to an end-on junction with the Warrington and Newton Line, a branch of the L&M, at Dallam, near Warrington in Cheshire. ...

Western Region: Encyclopedia II - History of rail transport in Great Britain - Early successes

The financial success of the early railways was phenomenal, as they had no real competition. The roads were still very slow and in poor condition. Prices of fuel and food fell in cities connected to railways owing to the fall in the cost of transport. The layout of lines with gentle gradients and curves, originating from the need to help the relatively weak engines and brakes, was a boon when speeds increased, avoiding for the most part the need to re-survey the course of a line. Less than 20 years after the Liverpool line opened, it was possible to travel fro ...

In the 1980s the government of Margaret Thatcher was famously hostile to the railways. For main article see Beeching axe. By the early 1960s the railways were running at a huge deficit, and patience with them by the government had run out. In 1962 the transport minister Ernest Marples appointed Richard Beeching as head of British Railways with a brief to cut the spiralling losses. His report The Reshaping of British Railways issued in 1963, concluded that much of the railway network carried little traffic and should be closed down. His report proposed a massive closures program w ...
