 | | | Wedding Ring: Encyclopedia II - Wedding ring - MaterialsMost religious marital ceremonies accept a band of any material to symbolize the taking of marriage vows, with unusual substitutions permitted in marriages under unusual circumstances. When people cannot obtain or adjust a metal ring of appropriate size, substitutions such as rubber bands may be used.
To make wedding rings, jewellers most commonly use a precious yellow alloy of gold, hardened with copper, tin and bismuth. Platinum and white alloys of gold, equivalent to or superior than gold, are also used. Titanium has recently becom ...

 | | | Wedding Ring: April 30 - May Eve - Beltaine
(Beltane)April 30 - May Eve - Beltaine 'Beltane' means 'fire of Bel', Belinos being one name for the Sun God, whose coronation feast we now celebrate. As summer begins, weather becomes warmer, and the plant world blossoms, an exuberant mood prevails. It is a time of unabashed sexuality and promiscuity. Young people spend the entire night in the woods 'a-maying', and dance around the phallic Maypole the next morning. Older married couples may remove their wedding rings (and the restrictions they imply) for this one night. May morning is a magical time for 'wild' water (dew, flowing streams, and springs) which is collected and used to bathe in for beauty, or to drink for health. The Christian religion had only a poor substitute for the life-affirming Maypole - namely, the death-affirming cross. Hence, in the Christian calendar, this was celebrated as 'Roodmas'. In Germany, it was the feast of Saint Walpurga, or 'Walpurgisnacht'. An alternative date around May 5 (Old Beltaine), when the sun reaches 15 degrees Taurus, is sometimes employed by Covens. (The name 'Lady Day' is incorrectly assigned to this holiday by some modern traditions of Wicca.) Read more here: » Wiccan Holidays: April 30 - May Eve - Beltaine

 | | | Wedding Ring: Encyclopedia - Visual markers of marital statusHumans use clothing, hairstyle, accessories, jewelry, tattoos, and other bodily adornments as indicators of social status. One status that is usually of extreme interest is marital status. In many places and times, someone who is married is supposedly off-limits for flirtation, casual sex, or courtship. If married people merit special privileges, forms of address, or expressions of politeness, it is useful to know this immediately.
Because marital status markers are usually gender-specific, male and female status markers will b ...

Wedding ring - Pre-wedding customs.
According to some customs, the wedding ring forms the last in a series of gifts, which also may include the engagement ring, traditionally given as a betrothal present, and the promise ring, often given when serious courting begins.
Other more recent traditions, and the jewelry trade, seek to expand the idea of a series of ring-gifts with an eternity ring, which symbolizes the renewal or ongoing nature of a lasting marriage, sometimes given after the birth of a first chi ...

 | | | Wedding Ring: Encyclopedia II - Wedding ring - Contemporary usageIn the United Kingdom and the United States in past generations, women wore wedding bands much more commonly than men did. Today, both partners often wear wedding rings, but where occupations or professions forbid or discourage the wearing of jewelry (as in the cases of actors, police, military pilots and electrical workers), either marriage partner may not wear a ring. In addition, people often remove wedding rings for comfort or safety. Others may object to the idea of precious metals, or dislike the idea of declaring their legal status th ...
