We Are the World: Encyclopedia II - Hall & Oates - Private Eyes 1981

By the time "You Make My Dreams" was falling down the charts, Hall & Oates had already released their follow-up album Private Eyes. Having worked in the studio while Voices was at its peak in popularity, the two already had most of their material laid down and felt no need to repeat the old formula from that LP. The result was the first Hall & Oates album to reach the top ten on the Billboard album charts. The ...

Next came H2O, a polished, synth-heavy album that became the duo's most successful album to date. H2O reached #3 on the album charts and spawned three top-10 singles. "Maneater," the biggest hit of their career, reached the number-one spot on December 18, 1982 and stayed there for four weeks. The ballad "One on One" and a cover of Mike Oldfield's song "Family ...

We Are the World: Encyclopedia II - Steve Perry musician - Post-Journey

Seven years later, in 1994, he released For the Love Of Strange Medicine, his second solo effort. It was mildly successful, partly due to the Strange Medicine world tour (supported for a short time by Sass Jordan) being cut short. Journey reunited in 1996 for Trial by Fire. The album was a success, but a short-lived one. Before the Trial By Fire tour, Perry suffered a hip injury mountain hiking in Hawaii and was unable to perform. He had a degenerative bone condition and would need a hip replacement. Steve was reluctant ...

Michael Jackson - Childhood: 1958-1961. Jackson was born the seventh of nine children in Gary, Indiana to Joseph and Katherine Jackson. The entire family, including older siblings Rebbie, Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, LaToya, and Marlon (whose twin brother Brandon died shortly after birth), and younger siblings Randy and Janet, lived together in a small two-bedroom house, while Joseph worked in a steel mill. At the behest of their mother, but against Joseph's wishes, the Jackson children were raised as Jehovah's Witnesses and practiced door-to-door ...

We Are the World: Encyclopedia II - Hall & Oates - Voices 1980

The 1980s brought about change for Hall & Oates. They had determined that the biggest problem was that their music was being filtered through outsider producers and studio musicians who weren't familiar with their own tastes and thoughts. They also wished to capture the sound of New York City, which by then had become their home. So, instead of recording in Los Angeles like they'd done previously, they decided to record at Electric Lady Studios in New York, just five minutes away from their apartments. They also began producing their own ...

Michael Jackson - Nicknames. Through-out his career, Jackson has often been referred to as the "King of Pop" and/or "Wacko Jacko." The title "King of Pop" was conceived by actress and long-term friend of Jackson's, Elizabeth Taylor. She presented Jackson with an "Artist of the decade" awarded in 1989, and during her introduction referred to him as "the true king of pop, rock and soul. Since then, Jackson's fans has often referred to him as simply "the king of pop". Many members of the media refer to Jackson as the "self-proclaimed king of pop" as it is sometime ...

We Are the World: Encyclopedia II - Hall & Oates - Rock N' Soul 1983

By the fall of 1983, Hall & Oates were one of the biggest pop music acts in America. They had five #1 singles to their credit, two consecutive top-10 albums, and were one of the biggest names on MTV. The constant loop of recording, promoting, and touring wore them down, though, and in 1983 they could only put out a greatest-hits package, Rock N Soul Volume 1. The album peaked at #7 (not bad for a greatest hits collection) and ...

Michael Jackson continued to engage in door-to-door evangelizing as a Jehovah's Witness after becoming famous, but in disguise. His career and flamboyant lifestyle led to friction with congregation elders. At one point, his sister LaToya was shunned by Jehovah's Witnesses, and in 1987, he formally left the religion. Jackson's most famous home is his 2,600 acre (11 km²) Neverland Ranch in Santa Ynez, California, which he purchased in 1988. It is named after the magical kingdom of Neverland from the children's story "Peter Pan". Jackso ...

We Are the World: Encyclopedia II - Hall & Oates - Leaner Years and Sacred Songs 1978-1980

After this small run of hits, Hall & Oates encountered something of a dry spell. Despite touring constantly and recording albums with efficiency, the duo could not find any pop success for a number of reasons. First, as Oates would later say, they were "in a learning process in the '70s." The two were still fine-tuning their soul-rock style. Also, the musical climate at the time was not very receptive to their sound. By the time they released the rock-oriented Along the Red Ledge (an album that is generally well-received to ...

We Are the World: Encyclopedia II - Everything I Do I Do It for You - Writing of the song

The idea of a song to promote Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves came late in the making of the film. David Kerschenbaum of Morgan Creek Records suggested Adams – whom he had worked with in the early 1980s – to write the song with the music based on the score from Michael Kamen. Initially, Adams was to write the lyrics for another artist to perform, but it was decided that he should perform the song after writing it with Waking up the Neighbours produc ...

We Are the World: Encyclopedia II - Artists United Against Apartheid - Post-apartheid

With the end of the apartheid regime in 1994 and the reintegration of Sun City and other former nominally-independent regions into the South African state, "Sun City" ceased to be a contemporary protest and became a historical document; any pledge to boycott Sun City or other similar places in South Africa became superfluous. In 1997, in a somewhat bizarre twist of history, the m
