Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Samael Aun Weor - Life

"Samael Aun Weor" was born Víctor Manuel Gómez Rodríguez in Bogotá, Colombia. His childhood and family life are not well known, except that he had a brother, and his father remarried after a divorce. In his autobiographical work The Three Mountains, Samael recounts the ways in which he had already assimilated into his understanding a vast amount of esoteric and occult knowledge before reaching adulthood. He states that because he was born with an awakened consciousness, he recapitulated his practise of meditation and was analyzing previous incarna ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Hereward the Wake - Life

Partly because of the sketchiness of evidence for his existence, his life has become a magnet for speculators and amateur scholars. But it is traditionally believed that he was the son of an Anglo-Saxon lord, Earl Leofric, and that the place he was born and grew up was in or near Bourne in Lincolnshire. It is claimed that he was a tenant of Peterborough Abbey, from which he held lands in the parishes of Witham-on-the-Hill and Barholme with Stow in the south-western corner of Lincolnshire, and of Crowland Abbey near Rippingale in the n ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Janissary - The janissary revolts

Janissaries also became aware of their own importance and began to desire better payment. In 1449 they revolted for the first time, demanding higher wages, which they obtained. After 1451, every new sultan was obliged to pay each janissary a reward and raise his pay rank. Sultan Selim II gave janissaries permission to marry in 1566. In the aftermath of the Moldavian Magnate Wars (1595–1621) with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Habsburgs, culminating in the battles of Cecora and Ottoman defeat at Khotyn, Sultan Os ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Saint Malo Louisiana - Origin

The Saint Malo settlement was established in 1763 by Filipinos who deserted from Spanish ships during the Manila Galleon Trade. Reasons for their desertion from the ships varied; however their desire to escape the Spanish brutalities is generally regarded as the main reason. They settled in the marshlands of Louisiana where no Spaniards could reach them. The people who settled in the bayous were called Manilamen and later on as Tagalas. They governed themselves and kept their existence a secret fr ...

Saint Malo was only one of the Filipino settlements in the Southern United States. The other settlements were the Manila Village on Barataria Bay in the Mississippi Delta by the Gulf of Mexico; Alombro Canal and Camp Dewey in Plaquemines Parish; and Leon Rojas, Bayou Cholas, and Bassa Bassa in Jefferson Parish, all in Louisiana. The oldest of these settlements, however was Saint Malo. But Manila Village on Barataria Bay was considered to be the largest and the most popular of them all. Houses on in Manila Village ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Hereward the Wake - The Wakes of Bourne

There is an English family with the surname of Wake and a baronetcy (hereditary knighthood). The family of Wake held Bourne in the 13th century. The heir apparent to the baronetcy is traditionally called Hereward, and is therefore known as Sir Hereward Wake when he succeeds. It is possible that the Wake family may have created a spurious connection to Hereward, in order to retain claim to his lands, but there is no reason to think so. Hereward's great-great-granddaughter, Emma, married Hugh Wake. She was heiress to some of what had be ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - William Booth - Biography

William Booth - Early life. Booth was born in Sneinton, Nottingham, England, the only son of four surviving children born to Samuel Booth and Mary Moss. His father was wealthy by the standards of the time, but during Booth's childhood, as a result of his father's bad investments, the family descended into poverty. In 1842, Samuel Booth, who by then was bankrupt, could no longer afford his son's school fees, and 13 year-old William Booth was apprenticed to a pawnbroker. Later that same year Samuel Booth died, ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Keith Richards - Early life

Keith Richards was a World War II baby born in the "crossfire hurricane" (mentioned in the lyrics of "Jumpin' Jack Flash") of Nazi bombings. He was an only child, reportedly conceived as a way to get his mother, Doris Richards, off the wartime factory production line. Richards' father, Bert, was a disabled war veteran and working class factory labourer. Despite the family's modest station, Richards' paternal grandparents were socialists and civic leaders. His maternal grandfather toured Britain as a jazz/big band musician. In interviews, Ric ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Saint Malo Louisiana - Their Role in the War of 1812

According to oral history and later cited by Filipino historians, the Manilamen took part in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 during the War of 1812. These men signed up with the French buccaneer, Jean Baptiste Lafitte to join the army of Major-General Andrew Jackson. On January 8, 1815, a British army numbering about 8,000 men prepared to capture New Orleans, Louisiana. Under the command of Major-General Sir Edward M. Pakenham, the British soldiers were against the American army composed of only about 1,500 men under the command of ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Thérèse de Lisieux - The Little Way

Thérèse is known for her "Little Way." Because of her station in a Carmelite convent, Thérèse realized that she would not be able to achieve "great deeds" as saints often did, and so must find another way to express her love of God. She wrote, "Love proves itself by deeds, so how am I to show my love? Great deeds are forbidden me. The only way I can prove my love is by scattering flowers and these flowers are every little sacrifice, every glance ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Keith Richards - Career accomplishments

The Rolling Stones began as a cover band in Britain playing Blues and early rock'n'roll covers. Their first recordings reflect this. "I Just Want to Make Love to You," "Not Fade Away," "Carol" and "It's All Over Now" are all American cover songs. Andrew Loog Oldham became The Stones' first manager and encouraged Jagger, Richards to write the needed songs. Brian Jones - who at the time lacked the confidence to present his songs to the band - lost the leadership role he assumed when he founded the band to Jagger and Richards as the duo soon pr ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Keith Richards - Solo recordings

During the late 1980s, Richards resolved to outlast the musically fickle Mick Jagger—a man he began to call "Brenda"—and formed a band called Organized Crime. The band evolved out of work on The Stones' poorly received 1986 album, Dirty Work, and the Taylor Hackford film Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll!. The motion picture was a blend of live concert, back stage documentary, and personality conflict which celebrated the 60th birthda ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Keith Richards - The Human Riff

Peter Rudge, Stones' tour manager from 1972-1978, observed that "Keith doesn't go in for razzle-dazzle solos, He plays rhythm. He doesn't need ego. He doesn't need his ego fed. Keith knows who he is exactly. He knows his capabilities better than anyone and recognizes his limitations. All the great guitarists take a bow to Keith." In the early 1960s, greatly influenced by Chuck Berry, he and Brian Jones developed an interplay with both sharing lead and rhythm guitar parts, which Richards likened to "the ancient art of weaving". The Sto ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Keith Richards - Which way to go – I don't know

What the future holds for the Rolling Stones and Keith Richards is unpredictable. In 2004, it was announced that Richards might appear in the upcoming sequel to the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. He would play the character of Captain Jack Sparrow's (Johnny Depp's) dad. Depp had previously said that he loosely based the appearance and mannerisms for this Academy Award–nominated performance on Richards. Although Richards tested costumes with Depp, the current Rolling Stones tour means that it will be unli ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Keith Richards - The Human Riff - Richards as Musician

Richards derived much of his early driving rhythm style from Chuck Berry whose guitar work has remained a touchstone for Richards. The Rolling Stones began as a rhythm and blues band, but after Jagger insisted on Richards' being a band member, two nascent members adverse to playing Chuck Berry songs quit the band. Richards with Stones founding member and guitarist Brian Jones formed a sound of interwoven lead and rhythm guitar parts, and throughout the Stones' history Richards has kept the ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Keith Richards - Public image and private life

To the general public, Richards is better known for his drug-related outlaw image than for his songwriting contributions. Richards and the Stones cultivated a decadent and counter-culture aesthetic during the 1960s and '70s, and Richards' frank admission that he used narcotics often made him a poster-boy for teens and adults who sought refuge in — as Keith sings in Before They Make Me Run — "booze and pills and powders." In a famous 1971 Rolling Stone magazine interview, he discussed his drug use. Ten years later, in anothe ...

Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Ancient Greece - Society

The distinguishing features of ancient Greek society were the division between free and slave, the differing roles of men and women, the relative lack of status distinctions based on birth, and the importance of religion. Way of Life: Encyclopedia II - Thérèse de Lisieux - Early life

St. Thérèse de Lisieux was born in Alençon, France, the daughter of Louis Martin, a watchmaker, and Zélie-Marie Guérin, a lacemaker. Both her parents were very religious. Louis had attempted to become a monk, but a lack of knowledge of Latin hindered him. Zélie-Marie had tried to become a nun, but was told she didn't have the vocation. Instead, she vowed that if she married, she would give all her children to the church. Louis and Zélie-Marie met in 1858 and married only three months later. They had nine children, of whom only five da ...
