A volcano is a geological landform (usually a mountain) where a substance, usually magma (rock of the Earth's interior made molten or liquid by extremely high temperatures along with a reduction in pressure and/or the introduction of water or other volatiles) erupts through the surface of a planet. Although there are numerous volcanoes (some very active) on the solar system's rocky planets and moons, on Earth at least, this phenomenon tends to occur near the boundaries of the continental plates. However, im ...

volcanoes: Encyclopedia II - Volcano - Volcano classification
Volcano - Erupted material. One way of classifying volcanoes is by the type of material erupted, which affects the shape of the volcano. If the erupting magma contains a high percentage (65%) of silica the lava is called felsic or acidic. Felsic lava tends to be highly viscous (not very fluid) and is pushed up in a blob that solidifies relatively quickly. Viscous lavas tend to form stratovolcanoes. Lassen Peak in California is an example of a stratovolcano formed from felsic lava. This type of volca ...

volcanoes: Encyclopedia II - Volcano - Effects of volcanoes

There are many different kinds of volcanic activity and eruptions: phreatic eruptions (steam) explosive eruption of high-silica lava (e.g., rhyolite) effusive eruption of low-silica lava (e.g., basalt) pyroclastic flows lahars (debris flow) carbon dioxide emission All of these activities can pose a hazard to humans. Volcanic activity is often accompanied by earthquakes, hot springs, fumaroles, mud pots and geysers. Lo ...

volcanoes: : Earth Changes - Will there be dramatic Geological and Political changes the coming years until 2012?

There is a lot of information found both in prophecies and in recent writings and articles talking about Earth Changes, usually defined as catastrophic geological events such as earthquakes, volcanoes, polar shifts, flooding, and global warming. Many point to the shifting times and the moving into the Golden Age and to 2012 being a turning point in the history of mankind. The research and sometimes channeled material presented, probably with the best of intentions, often still carries elements of our own subconscious fears but is it only fear based material or is there something to this predictions of Earth Changes?

volcanoes: Encyclopedia - Dormant volcano

A dormant volcano is one which is not currently erupting, but is believed to still be capable of erupting. This contrasts with an extinct volcano, where it is believed that no future eruptions will occur. In practice, it is often not possible to distinguish between a dormant and an extinct volcano. Volcanoes may remain dormant for thousands of years between eruptions, and several volcanoes thought to be extinct have subsequently re-erupted. Vesuvius was thought to be extinct before its famous eruption of AD 79, which destroyed ...

volcanoes: Encyclopedia - Volcano observatory

A volcano observatory is an institution that conducts research and monitoring of a volcano. Each observatory provides continuous and periodic monitoring of the seismicity, other geophysical changes, ground movements, volcanic gas chemistry, and hydrologic conditions and activity between and during eruptions. They also provide a detailed record of eruptions in progress. These observations serve to characterize eruptive behavior, identify the nature of precursory activity leading to eruption, define the processes by which different type ...

volcanoes: Encyclopedia - Cayambe volcano

Cayambe is the name of a volcano located in the central branch of the Ecuadorian Andes, in Pichincha province some 70 km northeast of Quito. Its exact location is 0.029 N 77.985 W and its elevation is 5,790 metres. It is the third highest mountain in Ecuador. It was first scaled by British climber Edward Whymper and his two Italian guides and companions Juan Antonio and Luis Carrel in 1880, and is a favourite of mountain climbers today. Cayambe, which has a permanent snow cap, is a Holocene compound volcano which has not ...

volcanoes: Encyclopedia - Under the Volcano

Under the Volcano (1947) is a semi-autobiographical novel by English writer Malcolm Lowry. It tells the story of Geoffrey Firmin, an alcoholic British consul in the small Mexican town of Quauhnahuac (recognizably Cuernavaca), on the Day of the Dead in 1938. Under the Volcano - The path to publication. In 1940, Lowry hired an agent, Harold Matson, to find a publisher for the manuscript, but it was rejected many times. He continued refining it for years, but this original 1940 version was published in ...

Augustine Volcano lies in southwestern Cook Inlet, southcentral coastal Alaska, 180 kilometres southwest of Anchorage. The nearly circular uninhabited island formed by the volcano is 12 km (7.5 mi) wide east-west, 10 km (6 mi) north-south; a nearly symmetrical central summit peaks at altitude 1,260 metres (4,134 feet). Augustine's summit consists of several overlapping domes emplaced during many historic and prehistoric eruptions. Most of the fragmental debris exposed along its slopes comprises angular blocks of dome-roc ...

volcanoes: Encyclopedia - Xenu

In Scientology doctrine, Xenu (also Xemu) is a galactic ruler (of the "Galactic Confederacy") who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of people to Earth, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living, and continue to cause problems today. These events are known to Scientologists as "Incident II", and the traumatic memories associated with them as The Wall of Fire or the R6 implant. The story of Xenu is ...

volcanoes: Encyclopedia - Cryovolcano

A Cryovolcano is literally, an icy volcano. Cryovolcanoes form on icy moons, and possibly on other low temperature astronomical objects (e.g. Kuiper belt objects). Rather than molten rock, these volcanoes erupt volatiles such as water, ammonia or methane compounds. Collectively referred to as cryomagma, these substances are usually liquids and form flumes, but can also be in vapour form. After eruption cryomagma condenses to a solid form when exposed to the very low surrounding temperature. Cryovolcano - Theories< ...

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is a scientific agency of the United States government. The scientists of the USGS study the landscape of the United States, its natural resources, and the natural hazards that threaten it. The organization has four major science disciplines, concerning biology, geography, geology, and hydrology. The USGS is a fact-finding research organization with no regulatory responsibility. The USGS was founded by Clarence King in March 3, 1879 from disparate regional survey agencies. Since ...

volcanoes: Encyclopedia - Observatory

An observatory is a location used for observing terrestrial and/or celestial events. Astronomy, astrology, climatology, geology, meteorology and volcanology are examples of disciplines for which observatories have been constructed. Historically, observatories were as simple as containing a sextant (for measuring the distance between stars) or Stonehenge (which has some alignments on astronomical phenomena). Modern astronomical observatories typically contain one or more permanently mounted telescopes contained in buildings with a rota ...
