Haredi Judaism - Israel.
In Israel, home to the most numerically powerful Haredi population, the situation is different. There, as in the United States, the community has adopted a policy of isolationism, but at the same time, it has also struggled for inclusion in dominant society, perceiving itself as the true protector of the country's Jewish nature.
The issues date to the late nineteenth-early twentieth century, with the rise of Zionism. Until the Holocaust, the vast majority of Haredi Jews rejected Zi ...

Neturei Karta - Early history.
For the most part, the members of Neturei Karta are descended from Hungarian Jews that settled in Jerusalem's Old City in the early nineteenth century, and from Lithuanian Jews who were students of the Gaon of Vilna, who had settled earlier. In the late nineteenth century, they participated in the creation of new neighborhoods outside the city walls to alleviate overcrowding in the Old City, and most are now concentrated in the neighborhood of Batei Ungarin ...

 | | | Vizhnitz: Encyclopedia II - Yissachar Dov Rokeach II - An Independent RebbeRokeach has long had a reputation for being a maverick among the Israeli haredi community. The early years following his appointment as rebbe saw him carefully forging alliances with other Hasidic courts (such as Ger and Vizhnitz), as well as the Misnagdic communities, particularly Degel HaTorah. He quickly became known as a political moderate and pragmatist, eventually even breaking what had earlier been something of a taboo; accepting funding and subsidies from the Israeli government.

 | | | Vizhnitz: Encyclopedia II - Hasidic Judaism - Religious practice and culture
Hasidic Judaism - Fundamental conceptions.
The teachings of Hasidism are founded on two theoretical conceptions: (1) religious panentheism, or the omnipresence of God, and (2) the idea of Devekut, communion between God and man. "Man," says the Besht, "must always bear in mind that God is omnipresent and is always with him; that God is, so to speak, the most subtle matter everywhere diffused... Let man realize that when he is looking at material things he is in reality gazing at the image of the Deity which is present in all things. W ...

 | | | Vizhnitz: Encyclopedia II - Rebbe - Hasidic RebbesThe first and greatest hasidic Rebbe according to Hasidism was its founder Israel ben Eliezer known as the Ba'al Shem Tov ("Master [of the] Good Name"). His disciples who rose up or were selected for positions of leadership and their successors have thereafter been honored with the same title, Rebbe, which gradually came to imply of itself a higher spiritual status.
Each Hasidic group refers to their leader as "The Rebbe". A Hasidic leader is also known as an AdMoR (an acrostic for ''Ad[oneinu] Mo[reinu] R[abe ...

 | | | Vizhnitz: Encyclopedia II - Rebbe - Distinction of rebbe and ravA rebbe is distinct from a 'rav' (a word usually translated as Rabbi, who is a leader of an Orthodox Jewish community, either hasidic or non-hasidic) in that a rebbe need have no scholarly attainments, and as such is not necessarily qualified to pasken halakha (decide points of Jewish law). It is not uncommon for a Hasidic Jew to have a rebbe and to go to a rav for a ruling on an issue of religious law. Interestingly, there has been a female rebbe, the 'Mai ...

 | | | Vizhnitz: Encyclopedia II - Rebbe - Kvitlach and tishTo date there are generally - although there are quite some exceptions - two main characteristics that mark a rabbi as a rebbe. One is reading "kvitlach" (Yiddish, "notes"). A kvittle is a note with names and short requests for which the rebbe to pray. Hasidim believe that rebbes read supernaturally "between the lines" of a kvittle and in every Hasidic sect numerous anecdotes always circulated of how the rebbe saw things that were not written in the kvittle. The kvittle is usually written by the rebbe's "gabbai" (secretary). Usually, but with exceptions, a "pidyon" (redemption) of cash is handed to the rebbe under the kvitt ...

 | | | Vizhnitz: Encyclopedia II - Rebbe - Terminology and historyThe word " Rebbe" is a mispronunciation of the Mishnaic Hebrew word "Rabbe" (or "Rabbi" which is spelled correctly but mispronounced in English) meaning "my master" or "my teacher".
The early teachers of the Mishnah (in early Greek and Roman times) had the title Rabbe, such as Rabbi Akiva, Rabbi Simeon bar Yohai. Rabbi Judah haNasi was simply called "Rabbe"
