Viz comic: Encyclopedia - Viz comic

Viz is a popular British adult spoof comic magazine. The comic's style parodies the strait-laced British comics of the post-war period, notably The Beano and The Dandy, but with very adult language, crude toilet humour and either sexual or violent story lines (and often both). It also sends up tabloid style newspapers, with mockeries of letters pages and daft competitions with rubbish prizes. It also often satirises current events and politicians, and pretends to be obsessed with celebrities, including half ...

The comic was started in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1979 by Chris Donald who produced the comic from his bedroom, with help from his brother Simon and friend Jim Brownlow. It came about at around the time, and in the spirit of, the punk fanzines, and used alternative methods of distribution such as the prominent DIY record label and shop Falling A Records which was an early champion of the comic. The first 12-page issue went on sale for 20p (30p to students) in a local pub that hosted punk gigs, and within hours the run of 150 copies had sold ou ...

Viz comic: Encyclopedia II - Garo - Garo in English

For the most part, most manga translation publishers have passed over the offbeat works showcased in Garo in favor of more mainstream, action/adventure and romance stories from the major publishers. Similarly, scanlation translators have mostly overlooked experimental fare. However, some Garo comics are available in English. In the early 1990s, Viz Comics (now VIZ Media) published some of Sanpei Shirato's Kamui under the title Legend of Kamui. More recently, Blast Books has published books of avant-garde ma ...

Viz comic: Encyclopedia II - Darkstalkers - Comics

In Japan, there have been several comics and graphic novels based on Darkstalkers, but only a few have been released outside of Japan. In 1998, Viz translated and released a set of 6 comics based on the Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge OVA, and later combined them into a single trade paperback. A North American produced comic first came to light in 2003, when Dreamwave Productions signed a deal with Capcom to create comics based on several of their licenses; Dreamwave folded before any issue of Darkstalkers c ...

Viz comic: Encyclopedia II - Tipton - Outsiders opinion of Tipton

The Newcastle-based adult comic Viz used Tipton as a perennial butt of jokes throughout the 1990s, involving a fictitious councillor, Hugo Guthrie. Guthrie may, however, have been based on the real inter-war figure of Councillor Doughty who forbade any more pubs to open until one was opened carrying his name — now renamed the Pie Factory — and apparently when asked by his Town Clerk whether the then Council should buy a urinal for the town park, instructed him to buy two so we can breed from them. Tipton was described by the BBC during the 2000 West Bromwich West by-election as; "o ...

Viz comic: Encyclopedia II - Dragon Ball canon - The Manga

Dragon Ball canon - Dragon Ball. In the universe of Dragon Ball, the highest level of canon is the manga Dragon Ball. Published in Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan, the comic was both written and drawn by Akira Toriyama. As such, it represents the ultimate and correct vision of his world as it was presented to his readers. Fortunately, the manga itself is relatively free from direct contradictions, though there are certainly some topics open for debate. Although Viz Communications is thought to do a good job translating the manga into English by fans, the final and authoritative ...
