Virtues Dictionary: Witch Witchcraft Dictionary on ON-LAY

ON-LAY: The act of *laying on* or creating new magical virtues by the use of operative magical acts at a specific geographical space, be it indoors or out, though those out of doors are preferred -- the art of placing an *overlay* of relevant energies and mythical and magical patterns on a particular object for specific intentions and purposes. Under an on-lay, the attributes brought on from the Anima Loci are minimally kept and can even be overridden.

Virtues Dictionary: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Tamarisk

Tamarisk A shrub especially adapted to warm arid climates. In Egypt it was considered to possess great occult virtues. "Many of the temples were surrounded with such trees, preeminently one at Philae, sacred among the sacred, as the body of Osiris was supposed to lie buried under it" (TG 318).

Virtues Dictionary: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Sapphire

Sapphire Many ancient peoples knew how to avail themselves of the magical virtues of precious stones. The sapphire was especially valued because supposed to enshrine some of the influences of Venus as transmitted through other attributes to Luna or the higher aspect of the Moon, and so to be able to induce equanimity and banish evil thoughts.

" 'The sapphire,' say the Buddhists, 'will open barred doors and dwellings (for the spirit of man); it produces a desire for prayer, and brings with it more peace than any other gem; but he who would wear it must lead a pure and holy life' " (IU 1:265).

Modern authorities surmise that the sappheiros of the Greeks and the sappir of the Bible were our lapis lazuli, while our sapphire was called hyacinthus. The same qualities are attributed to the color blue.

Virtues Dictionary: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Paramita

Paramita (Sanskrit) [from param beyond + ita gone from the verbal root i to go]

Gone or crossed to the other shore; derivatively, virtue or perfection. The paramitas vary in number according to the Buddhist school: some quoting six, others seven or ten; but they are the glorious or transcendental virtues -- the keys to the portals of jnana (wisdom).

Blavatsky gives these seven keys as (VS 47-8):

1)    dana "the key of charity and love immortal";

2)    sila (good character), "the key of Harmony in word and act, the key that counterbalances the cause and the effect, and leaves no further room for Karmic action"; 3) kshanti, "patience sweet, that nought can ruffle";

3)    viraga, "indifference to pleasure and to pain, illusion conquered, truth alone perceived";

4)    virya (strength, power), "the dauntless energy that fights its way to the supernal TRUTH, out of the mire of lies terrestrial";

5)    dhyana (profound spiritual-intellectual contemplation, with utter detachment from all objects of sense and of a lower mental character), human consciousness in the higher reaches of this state becomes purely buddhic, with the summit of the manas acting as vehicle for the retention of what the percipient consciousness experiences; once the golden gate of dhyana is opened, the pathway stretching thence leads towards the realm of "Sat eternal"; and

6)    prajna (understanding, wisdom), that part of the mind that functions when active as the vehicle of the higher self; "the key to which makes of man a god, creating him a Bodhisattva, son of the Dhyanis."

The six, seven, or ten paramitas have reference to the three fundamental grades of training in discipleship: six for the beginner, seven for the one who is more advanced, and ten which are practiced by the adept. A faithful following of these virtues is incumbent upon every disciple, and fidelity and perseverance in performance mark progress along the mystic way.

The other three paramitas, making ten, are adhishthana (inflexible courage) that goes forward to meet danger or difficulty; upeksha (discrimination) which seeks and finds the right way of applying the paramitas; and prabodha (awakened inner consciousness) or sambuddhi (complete or perfect illumination).

Virtues Dictionary: Spiritual Theosophical Dictionary on Iu-Kabar Zivo

Iu-Kabar Zivo (Gn.). Known also as Nebat-Iavar-bar-Iufin-Ifafin, "Lord of the Eons" in the Nazarene System. He is the procreator (Emanator) of the seven holy lives (the seven primal Dhyan Chohans, or Archangels, each representing one of the cardinal Virtues), and is himself called the third life (third Logos). In the Codex he is addressed as "the Helm and Vine of the food of life". Thus, he is identical with Christ (Christos) who says "I am the true Vine and my Father is the Husband- man "(John xv. i). It is well known that Christ is regarded in the Roman Catholic Church, as the "chief of the Eons", and also as Michael "who is like god". Such was also the belief of the Gnostics.

Virtues Dictionary: Buddhist - Buddhism Dictionary on Transference of Merit

Transference of Merit

The concept of merit transference, or sharing one's own merits and virtues with others, is reflected in the following passage:

Some of us may ask whether the effect of (evil) karma can be... (changed) by repeating the name of Kuan-Yin. This question is tied up with that of rebirth in Sukhavati (the Pure Land) and it may be answered by saying that invocation of Kuan-Yin's name forms another cause which will right away offset the previous karma. We know, for example) that if there is a dark, heavy cloud above, the chances are that it will rain. But we als0 know that if a strong wind should blow, the cloud will be carried away somewhere else and we will not feel the rain.

 Similarly, the addition of one big factor can alter the whole course of karma It is only by accepting the idea of life as one whole that both Theravadins and Mahayanists can advocate the practice of transference of merit to others. With the case of Kuan-Yin then, by calling on Her name we identify ourselves with Her and as a result of this identification, Her merits flow over to us. These merits which are now ours then counterbalance our bad karma and save us from calamity. The law of cause and effect still stands good. All that has happened is that a powerful and immensely good karma has overshadowed the weaker one.

 (Lecture on Kuan-Yin by Tech Eng Soon - Penang Buddhist Association, c. 1960. Pamphlet.)
