| | | | Virtues: Peace Is More Than No War
Most world leaders, international organisations and so-called peace summits tend to define peace in the shadow of war, as 'a situation where there is no war"between nations. By doing so they are actually taking a negative view. By viewing the positive element in contrast to the negative, we will end up underrating the former'spotential. By defining light as the 'absence of darkness"or, life as the 'absence of death", we assign greater importance to the powers of darkness and death, or in the case of peace, to war, rather than peace.

| | | | | Virtues: Social Relevance of Ramzan Fast
Everyday during Ramzan, for one lunar month from sunrise to sunset, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and smoking. Why do Muslims undertake to fast during Ramzan? The common answer is that the Qur'an ordains it: ''O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self- restraint (2:183). Socially and personally, fasting has great relevance.''

| | | | Virtues: Glory of BrahmacharyaAbstinence or continence is the corner-stone
or foundation on which the pedestal of Moksha stands. If the foundation is not
very strong, the superstructure will fall down when there is heavy rain. Even
so if you are not established in Brahmacharya, if your mind is agitated by evil
thoughts, you will fall down. You cannot reach the summit of the ladder of Yoga
or the highest Nirvikalpa Samadhi.

Yoga" by Sri Swami Sivananda.

| | | | | | | | | | Virtues: Sai Baba's Words of Mercy, Action, Love
Shraddha and saburi form the crux of Shirdi Sai Baba's message. By shraddha , he meant absolute faith in the guru, to look upon the teacher as God, an avatar of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Baba said: ''Do not try to get mantras or discourses from anybody. My guru never taught me any mantra. But having faith and confidence in your guru is everything. Look at me wholeheartedly and I in turn look at you similarly.''

| | | | Virtues: True Love Uplifts The Human Spirit
It is now fashionable to ask: Why do we say "falling" in love and not "rising" in love? We "fall" in love because to love implies total surrender. Unless we surrender our ego to the object of our love, we cannot realise the power and expanse of love. There are two basic emotions which drive this world: love and hate. All relationships are affected in some way or other by these, and so they can either help sustain or destroy the universe in which we interact with one another and the environment.

| | | | Virtues: How to Identify a Modern Saint
Many people study religious scriptures profusely - which is a good thing. But they feel that the 'scriptural word' is enough. That is a mistake. A scripture is like a map. And a map is not the territory. What may appear as a beautiful mountainous range on paper could well turn out to be a treacherous obstacle in real life. Similarly, a river painted in brilliant hues of blue on a map, might be infested with snakes and crocodiles in reality.

| | | | Virtues: The Path
of Meditation - Raja YogaRaja yoga, is the
royal path of meditation. As a king maintains control over his kingdom, so can
we maintain control over our own "kingdom"- the vast territory of the
mind. In raja yoga we use our mental powers to realize the Atman through the
process of psychological control.
The basic premise of
raja yoga is that our perception of the divine Self is obscured by the
disturbances of the mind. If the mind can be made still and pure, the Self will
automatically, instantaneously, shine forth.

| | | | Virtues: Metallurgy of The Soul: Back to Nature
Studying Jain holy scriptures, I found I could draw a parallel between the behaviour of matter or non-living substance and the soul which is a living substance. Souls are infinite in number: Some are pure and liberated; others are unliberated and live a bodily or embodied existence. Pure souls possess properties or characteristics comprising infinite knowledge, vision and bliss and are quite different from unliberated, mundane, souls which have limited knowledge through mind and sense organs, experiencing birth and death.

Health Dictionary on Bach flower therapy
Bach flower therapy (Bach flower essence method, Bach flower essence system): Homeopathic system of diagnosis and treatment developed in the 1930s by British physician Edward Bach (1886-1936). Bach put forth his philosophy in Heal Thyself: An Explanation of the Real Cause and Cure of Disease, first published in 1931. Therein he described five fundamental truths, in sum: (1) Souls, invincible and immortal sparks of the Almighty, are the real, Higher selves of humans. (2) Humanity's purpose is to develop virtues and wipe out all intrapersonal wrongs. Souls know what circumstances conduce to the perfection of human nature. (3) One's lifetime is a minuscule part of one's evolution. (4) When one's Soul and personality are in harmony, one is healthy and happy. The straying of the personality from the dictates of the Soul is the root cause of disease and unhappiness. (5) The Creator of all things is Love, and everything of which humans are conscious manifests the Creator. Bach held that disease was essentially beneficial and that its design was to subject the personality to the Divine will of the Soul. He psychically discovered the specific healing effects of 38 wildflowers. The life force (soul quality or energy wavelength) of each of these flowers is transferable to water and thence to humans. Each of the so-called Bach flower remedies is a liquid that contains a soul quality with an affinity to a human soul quality; and each vegetable soul quality harmonizes its human counterpart with the Soul. The bases of classical diagnosis are conversation and intuition. Administration of the remedies is usually oral but may be external.
