Vijaya: Encyclopedia II - Sri Lanka - Geography

The island of Sri Lanka lies in the Indian Ocean, southwest of the Bay of Bengal. It is separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. Often referred to as Adam's Bridge, it is now mostly submerged, with only a chain of limestone shoals remaining above sea level. According to temple records, this na ...

Vijaya: Encyclopedia II - History of Sri Lanka - Early history

The Sinhalese chronicle the Mahavamsa relates the landing of Vijaya, the first Sinhalese king, in 543 BC. The Sinhalese people are believed to have migrated from somewhere in northern India: they are not Dravidian like the peoples of neighbouring south India. The Sinhala language is related to Sanskrit, as is Hindi. The first Sri Lankan kingdom had its capital at Tambapanni, but later shifted to Upatissagama and then to Anuradhapura. Pottery has been found at Anuradhapura, bearing Brahmi script and non-Brahmi writing, dating back to 600 BC, suggesting that the art of writing may have ...

Vijaya: Encyclopedia II - Sri Lanka - Ecology

Sri Lanka is one of the world's bio-diversity hot-spots. Its forests are among the most floristically rich in Asia and for some faunal groups, it has the world's highest density of species diversity. The southwest, where the influence of the moisture-bearing southwest monsoon is strongest, is home to the Sri Lanka lowland rain forests. At higher elevations they transition to the Sri Lanka montane rain fores ...

Vijaya: Encyclopedia II - Sri Lanka - Name

In 1972, the official name of the nation that governs the island was changed to the Free, Sovereign and Independent Republic of Sri Lanka (ශ්‍රී ලංකා in Sinhala / இலங்கை in Tamil). In 1978 this was changed to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Prior to 1972, Sri Lanka was known by a variety of names. Sri Lanka ("resplendent land" in Sanskrit) itself represents the modern adoption of a name of ancient lineage. It derives from the Ramayana, in which the island was simply called La ...

Vijaya: Encyclopedia II - History of Sri Lanka - Pre-history

There were palaeolithic human settlements in Sri Lanka by at least 125,000 years ago, by people using chert and quartz tools. The country was occupied about 34,000 years ago by the Balangoda people, mesolithic hunter gatherers who lived in caves (e.g. Batadombalena, Fa-Hien Rock cave). These people had genetic similarities to the modern hunter-gatherer people known as Veddas or Vannialaetto, some of whom still live in eastern Sri Lanka.[1] The Balangoda people appear to have been responsible for creating Horton Plains, in the central ...
