The medieval town of Visby has been entered as a site of the UNESCO World heritage program. An impressive feature of Visby is the fortress wall that surrounds the old city, dating from the time of the Hanseatic League. The inhabitants of Gotland traditionally speak their own language, known as Gutnish. The Gotlandic law (Guta lagh) was written down about 1220. Gotland is famous for its 92 medieval churches, most of which are restored and in active use. Traditional games of skill like Kubb and ...

Victual Brothers: Encyclopedia II - Gotland - Geography

The island province of Gotland is represented by the current administrative entity, Gotland County. This county consists of the sole municipality (kommun) Gotland Municipality. Visby, with half of the island's population (circa 22,000), is the seat for the county council and municipal council. Gotland is located about 90 km east off the Swedish mainland. The island Gotland is obviously just one island, but the historical province of Gotland also includes adjacent islands, which are often considered part of the Gotlandian cultur ...

Victual Brothers: Encyclopedia II - Hanseatic League - Lists of former Hanse cities

In the list that follows, the role of these foreign merchant companies in the functioning of the city that was their host, in more than one sense is, as Fernand Braudel pointed out in The Perspective of the World, a telling criterion of the status of that city: "If he rules the roost in a given city or region, the foreign merchant is a sign of the [economic] inferiority of that city or region, compared with the economy of which he is the emissary or representative." It is worthy of note that several women were Deputy Aldermen of the H ...

Victual Brothers: Encyclopedia II - Bergen Norway - Cityscape

The oldest part of the city is on the north side of the bay of Vågen. Here you find Bryggen, a number of old, wooden houses dating from the early 18th c., but still giving a medieval feel. The Saint Mary Church is the oldest church of Bergen, dating from around 1130. Two other churches, the Cathedral and the Korskirken church are also medieval, although modified later. The fortress of Bergenhus has a number of interesting buildings, notably the Haakonshallen royal hall from the 13th c., and the Rosenkrantz Tower, built around a ...
