Vault: How We Get What We Get

At one level, we are nothing more than a bundle of squiggly energy. Everything in our universe at its essence is comprised of an electro-magnetic vibration: sky, tree, table, computer, moon and you. Scientists will verify that we are vibrational creatures living in a vibrational universe. As we become more aware of how we interact with and shape the other vibrations around us, we will begin to see how we create the events in our lives. I believe that understanding how to work with the vibrations that make up our world is one of the major reasons we're here.

Vault: Encyclopedia II - Cathedral architecture - Chevets

The earliest example of the chevet is probably to be found in the church of St Martin at Tours; this was followed by others at Tournus, Clermont-Ferrand, Auxerre, Chartres, Le Mans and other churches built during the great church-building period of the 11th century. In the still greater movement in the 12th century, when the episcopacy, supported by the emancipated communes, undertook the erection of cathedrals of greater dimensions and the reconstruction of others. In some cases they used the old foundations, as in Chartres, Coutances and A ...

A gymnast's routine was marked out of a 10 if the gymnast had enough difficulty (the amount of difficulty that the gymnast had to have varied from Code to Code - in the 2001 - 2005 Code of Points, gymnasts needed 1.2 bo ...

Vault: Encyclopedia - Yellow peril

Yellow peril is also a humourous British term for a traffic warden. Yellow Peril (sometimes Yellow Terror) was a phrase that originated in the late 19th century with greater immigration of Chinese and Japanese laborers to various Western countries, notably the United States. The term, a color metaphor for race refers to the skin color of east Asians, and the fear that the mass immigration of Asians threatened white wages, standards of living and indeed, civilization itself. The phrase "yellow peril" was common ...

Vault: Encyclopedia II - Cathedral architecture - Basic elements

The essential element of a cathedral is the cathedra, the throne of the bishop. Also, there are usually 2 separate areas or chapels, one which houses the Blessed Sacrament, and the other which is used for the singing of the Holy Office. Non-Cathedral churches would usually have only one central area. The earliest extended development of the eastern end of the cathedral is that which was first set out in Edward the Confessor's church at Westminster, probably borrowed from the ancient church of St Martin at Tours; in this church, ...

Vault: Encyclopedia II - Paul Hamm - Gold medal controversy

Almost immediately after the competition, Hamm's gold in the Men's all-around event was called into doubt due to a scoring issue. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) ruled that South Korean bronze medalist Yang Tae-young was unfairly docked a tenth of a point in the all-around final. The 0.100 point deducted from Yang's start value in parallel bars, determined by the difficulty of the routine, was the difference between third and first, and, therefore, between the bronze medal and the gold medal. The FIG suspended three judg ...

Vault: Encyclopedia II - Yellow peril - United States

The "yellow peril" manifested itself in government policy with the U.S. Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which reduced Chinese immigration from 30,000 per year to just 105. The labor leader Samuel Gompers argued, "The superior whites had to exclude the inferior Asiatics, by law, or, if necessary, by force of arms." In 1920, the author Lothrop Stoddard wrote The Rising Tide of Color arguing against Asian immigration, claiming immigrants threatened Am ...

Vault: Encyclopedia II - Rick Allen drummer - Post-Accident Drum Sets

After Allen's accident, some unique thinking came into play in order to keep him behind the drum set. Simmons, a company noted for making electronic drum sets, designed a custom kit for Allen. Since electronic drums are little more than "triggers" which sense a hit from a drumstick or the motion of a foot pedal, Allen's kit was primarily pads in front of him and to his right (to play with his remaining arm), and primarily foot pedals on his left, which triggered the sound of Snare Drums and tom-toms. Allen would learn how to play patterns wi ...
