Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra, the combined Art and Science of divining a sense of place, have been developed since vedic times. Vastu Shastra is the means of getting in touch with the spirit of the earth, learning how to find were one belongs and consequently understanding how one behaves in relation to the rest of nature.
Vastu Shastra provides extensive knowledge about design principles and space clearing. Collectively, these underlying rhythms are sympathetic to human needs, enhance good health and prosperity, are known to radiate positive energy, and represent ecologically sustainable environments.

Vastu Shastra states that everything is fundamentally "shabda" or sound, which is the basic pulse of energy which is then woven into design.

Vastu Shastra combines yoga theory, ayurvedic medicine, astrology, music, art, architecture, ritual and colour into principles that are used for Space Clearing and Design.

Vastu: Role of Destiny

Vastu Shastra: Role of Destiny

All the defects, blasphemy and curses by sages on the house site should be expiated by performing suitable purification ceremonies and worships before one attempts to start the construction work of a house on such a site. Maya, the celestial architect, had explained the easy ways and means of identifying the nature of the soil. According to Maya, the master of the house who is going to construct the house should with his own hands dig out a square pit one cubit side and one cubit depth at the eastern direction or at the middle of the site (Brahmasthala).

Vastu: Defective Main Doorways

Vastu Shastra

One of the most important rules to be followed is not to have a marshy land across the maindoorway of the house. Honing such a marshy land across the maindoorway will lead its resident to rain. Allowing the drainage water to flow across the house will lead the resident to poverty. If an assemblage of people is forward talking infront of the house, or if a well is located in front of the house the residents of such a house will suffer from incurable diseases

Vastu: Vastu Rituals and Ceremonies - Chanku Stapanam

Vastu Shastra: Chanku Stapanam

It is very important to perform the ceremonies of installation of a conch-shell (Chanku Stapanam) and incantations to invoke the protection of the regents of the cardinal directions (Thikku Bhandhanam) before raising a new house or a workshop in the place where an old building has been demolished or in a site where there was no building standing for many years. Performance of these ceremonies ensures plenty, prosperity and good fortune and nullify the evil effects due to the presence of evil spirits buried underground, and renews the gravitational power of the earth. During the first twelve years after the construction of a house, the divinity present in that house will gradually diminish.

Each Veda has a subsidiary: ayurveda (knowledge of life) for rgveda, dhanurveda (knowledge of tools and weapon) for yajurveda, gandharvaveda (knowledge of arts) for samaveda and sthapatyaveda (architecture) for atharvaveda. In addition, puranas, nyayasastras, mimamsas and dharma sastras (smrtis) are also considered as upangas. Sthapatyaveda which is the subsidiary of atharvaveda is the subject of this discussion.
