Vandenberg AFB: Encyclopedia - X-23 PRIME

The Martin-Marietta X-23A PRIME (Precision Reentry Including Maneuvering reEntry) was a small lifting body re-entry vehicle tested by the United States Air Force in the mid-1960s. Unlike ASSET, primarily used for structural and heating research, the X-23 PRIME was developed to study the effects of maneuvering re-entry, including cross range maneuvers up to 710 miles (1143 km) off the ballistic track. Each X-23 was constructed from 2014-T6 titanium alloy, and beryllium, stainless steel, and aluminium "where appropriate". ...

Vandenberg AFB: Encyclopedia II - STS-41-B - Mission highlights

Following STS-9, the flight numbering system for Space Shuttle missions was changed. Thus, the next flight, instead of being designated STS-11, became STS 41-B. STS-10 was cancelled due to payload delays. The new numbering system was designed to be more specific in that the first numeral stood for the fiscal year offset into the shuttle program, the "4" being 1984. The second numeral represented the launch site l for KSC and 2 for Vandenberg AFB, Calif. The letter represented the order of launch assignment, "B" was the second launch schedule ...

Vandenberg AFB: Encyclopedia II - LGM-30 Minuteman - History

The Minuteman I and II were in service from 1960 until 1997. The Minuteman III was first deployed in 1969 and with the latest upgrades is expected to remain in service through the year 2025. The Minuteman had two innovations that gave it a long practical service life: a solid rocket booster, and a digital flight computer. This computer was one of the very first recognizably modern embedded systems. The solid rocket booster made the Minuteman faster to launch than other ICBMs, which used liquid fuels. A crucial innovation in this area was to include a valve to release the booster pressure, and ...

Vandenberg AFB: Encyclopedia II - Space Shuttle Enterprise - Service

Construction was begun on the first Orbiter on June 4, 1974. Designated OV-101, she was originally planned to be named Constitution. However, a write-in campaign caused her to be renamed after the Starship Enterprise, featured on the television show Star Trek. The design of OV-101 was not the same as that planned for OV-102, the first flight model; the tail was constructed differently, and she did not have the interfaces to mount OMS pods. A large number of subsystems - ranging from main engines to radar equipment - was not installed on this vehicle, ...
