| Resources on Vaastu - The Indian art of sacred space | | | | What is Vaastu Vaastu (or Vasthu, Vastu and Vaastu Shastra) is the Indian science of space and architecture and how we may create spaces and environment that supports physical & spiritual health and prosperity.
Vaastu evolved during Vedic times in India. The concepts of Vashtu was transferred to Tibet, South East Asia and finally to China and Japan where it provided the base for the development of what is now known as Feng Shui.
Vaastu is the art and science of designing houses, offices, temples etc that swirl with good energy. Indian Maharajas and Moghul Emperors used Vasthu when they built their symmetrical palaces, artificial lakes, and geometric courtyards that thirstily absorbed positive energy.
Like feng shui, Vasthu is based on an octagon with the four directions being the anchors. Hindus believe that gods live in each of the quarters of the house, and govern the rooms, possessions, and activities in these locations.
Vasthu is an inherent energy concept of science. We cannot see energy with our naked eyes but we can realize and see its application in different forms and fashions. Vasthu uses the forces of natural energies and aims to restore the balance between the home (the microcosm) and the cosmos (the macrocosm).
Vasthu is not only a science, but is a bridge between man and nature, thus teaching us the Art of Living. Just like every subject of human aspect is governed with rules, regulations and acts, similarly the nature has also got certain key factor principles for smooth governing of its residents, in which Vasthu stands for the law of natural energies.
Some short principles of Vasthu
- Indra, the god of gods, is positioned to the East. The East is where it all begins in Vasthu. When people build their homes, the main door or the entrance is always facing the East. The eastern direction is the harbinger of good luck, which comes into the house through the door.
- Kubera, the god of wealth, resides in the north. In this location some symbolic valuables should be placed to attract wealth.
- The Northeast is the position for Dharma, the god of righteousness. This is the place for worship, meditation and introspection.
- Agni, the god of fire, lives in the southeast corner. This should be the place of the kitchen.
- Yama, the god of death, resides in the South. He prevents the evil eye from taking control of our lives. In India, people put a ghoulish pumpkin mask, similar to Halloween masks, in Yama's position to ward off the evil eye.
- Niruthi, who prevents homes from being robbed, dwells in the southwest corner. This is a safe place for valuables.
- Varuna, the god of water, lies to the West, where the bathroom should be.
- Vayu, the god of wind and air, is situated in the northwest corner. Vayu promotes serenity, peace and calm. A good place for the bedroom.

| ARTICLES RELATED TO Vaastu | | | | Vaastu: Reinterpreting Vaastu In
India we must be grateful that the core beliefs, theoretical rigour and
application of the Vaastu Shastras are still
available, though in a depleted form. From the study of texts, dialogues with
practitioners and field application of the concepts I have been able to
reconstruct the overview of the Vaastu Shilpa Shastras and
give a guideline for present day application. There is a great deal of
resistance and deep feelings of distrust from the trained designers in the
'modern institutesÕ toward the assumptions and symbolism of the traditional
paradigm. It is almost as if they feel threatened that their hegemony would be
displaced. Are their fears valid? Is the basis of the Vaastu Shastras questionable
in its present day application? Is it a meaningless mumbo jumbo in the
'scientificÕ climate of today?

 | | | Vaastu: Feng Shui and the New Children
How does the ancient science and art of feng shui relate to the New Children? Due to their sensitivities, the New Children have often been likened to canaries being sent into the coal mine. Feng shui can be used to transform the coal mine - to create more harmony and balance in our physical spaces and surroundings. Since our homes and physical surroundings are comprised of endlessly transforming and interconnected energy fields, we must develop a conscious relationship with the vast dynamics contributing to these energy fields. | | | Vaastu: Five Elements Of Vastu The whole universe is made up of five basic elements, the
earth, water, fire, air and space. Our body is also made up of these five basic
elements of nature. The pancha-mahabhootas are related to our five senses of
smell, taste, hearing, touch and sight. Any imbalance in our external and
internal Vastu translates into unhappy situations. Vastu teaches the individual
to live in balance and harmony with the panchamahabhootas.

VedasVasthu
in The Vedas
Each Veda has a
subsidiary: ayurveda (knowledge of life) for rgveda, dhanurveda (knowledge of
tools and weapon) for yajurveda, gandharvaveda (knowledge of arts) for samaveda
and sthapatyaveda (architecture) for atharvaveda. In addition, puranas,
nyayasastras, mimamsas and dharma sastras (smrtis) are also considered as
upangas. Sthapatyaveda which is the subsidiary of atharvaveda is the subject of
this discussion. Because it is the subsidiary of Veda, its authority is clear
and undisputed.

Lane It
is our tradition from time immemorial to erect a statue of Lord Vinayaka
(Elephant God) or the figure of an elephant, as a remedial measure in the case
of the entrance of a house or building faces a lane or a street.(The lane or
street jutting into the house of building)
The rule
says that it is a great defect to have a house facing a lane or street, and
those who live in such a house will lose peace of mind.
