Uznam: Encyclopedia - Świna

The Świna (Pomeranian: Swina, German: Swine) is a central strait, river or a branch of the Oder River out of three straits conecting the Lagoon of Szczecin with the Bay of Pomerania of the Baltic Sea, between the islands of Wolin and Uznam. In 1897 the river was dammed and deepened, and the Kaiserfahrt (Kanał Piastowski) was dug, which connected the Świna with the harbor of Stettin (Szczecin), and as such gained import as a direct waterway to the industrial city. The Świna is part of a waterway connecting Szczecin Airport with the Baltic ...

For history before 1400 please refer to main article History of Pomerania. Pomerania - Duchy of Pomerania in 15th century. Throughout the late mediaeval period Pomerania was claimed by Mecklenburg, Brandenburg and Poland, and occasionally by the Teutonic Knights. In 1420 the Wendish nobles of Brandenburg were supported by the Wends of Pomerania in an uprising against the Margrave of Brandenburg, Frederick von Hohenzollern ("Irontooth"), but were decively defeated at Angermünde. Frederick believed that the ...

Uznam: Encyclopedia II - Home Army and V1 and V2 - Impact on the course of the war

It is difficult to asses the overall impact of Home Army's intelligence work with regard to V-1 and V-2 on WW2. On one hand, the allies never developed successful counter defenses against the V-2 rockets. Hence, while the early capture of a rocket by AK was quite a feat in pure intelligence terms, it did not necessarily translate into significant results on the ground. The German development of the weapon simply took too long for it to have any impact on the course of the war. On the other hand, the AK did alert the British as to the dangers ...

Uznam: Encyclopedia II - Świnoujście - History

Historical population of Świnoujście The river Swina was formerly flanked by the fishing villages of West and East Swina. Towards the beginning of the seventeenth century it was made navigable for large ships, and Swinemuende, which was founded on the site of West Swina in 1748, was fortified and raised to the dignity of a town by Frederick the Great in 1765. It served as the outer port of Stettin/Szczecin. The city had broad unpaved streets and one-storey houses built in the Dutch style, which gave it an almost ...

Uznam: Encyclopedia II - Home Army and V1 and V2 - Early reports

As early as 1939 the Allies were alerted to German experiments with new kinds of weapons through the anonymous, and still mysterious Oslo Report. This was a document passed on to the British diplomatic attaché in Oslo by unknown person(s) which detailed some of the experiments being carried out by the German military. However, given its unknown source and unprecedented information the British discounted the report in the fear that it was a German counter intelligence provocation meant to expose British agents or t ...

Uznam: Encyclopedia II - Home Army and V1 and V2 - Bombing raid on Peenemunde

Combined with intelligence obtained from non-Polish sources this became enough to convince the British that "something was going on" in Peenemunde on Uznam. Consequently Churchill issued an order for a bombing raid. After a deft ruse on the part of the RAF which mislead the Germans as to the intended target of the raid, Peenemunde was successfully bombed on the night of August 17th, 1943 (Operation Hydra). The action was the largest bombing raid of the war thus far and involved more than 600 bombers. It managed to destroy the manufacturing f ...

Uznam: Encyclopedia II - Home Army and V1 and V2 - Capture of a V-2 rocket

The AK quickly located the new testing ground at Blizna thanks to reports from local farmers and AK field units, who managed to obtain on their own pieces of the fired rockets, by arriving on the scene before German patrols. In late 1943 in cooperation with British intelligence, a plan was formed to make an attempt to capture a whole unexploded V-2 rocket and transport it to Britain. At the time, the opinion within British intelligence was divided. One group tended to believe the AK accounts and reports, while another was highly scept ...

Uznam: Encyclopedia II - Pomerania - Subdivisions of Pomerania

In the German tradition Pomerania is often divided into Vorpommern (on the left bank of the Oder river) and Hinterpommern (on its right bank). The easternmost part is known in German as Pommerellen, bordering and overlapping with West Prussia. Polish terminology divides Pomerania into: Pomorze Zachodnie (Western Pomerania) and Pomorze Wschodnie or Pomorze Gdańskie (Gdańsk Pomerania). The former covers roughly the teritorries referred to in German as Vorpommern and Hinterpommern ...

Uznam: Encyclopedia II - Pomerania - Prehistoric times

In prehistoric times Pomerania was settled by migrants from Scandinavia, called the Rugians. Later, they moved on to Central Europe and were replaced by Slavic tribes. The Pomeranians are first mentioned around the year 1000 AD. The territory of northern Germania, as it was recorded 2000 years ago was covered with ice, which did not start to recede until the late period of the Old Stone Age or Paleolithic some 10,000 years BC, when the Scandinavian glacier receded to the north. Various archeological cultures developed in the ...
