unmarried: Encyclopedia II - Miss - Usage

Miss can be used in direct address to a woman, for example, May I help you, miss? Some women consider this disrespectful and prefer ma'am. In the United Kingdom, Miss is often used to address female teachers without using their name, regardless of marital status. Miss was formerly the default title for a businesswoman, but it has largely been replaced by Ms. in this context. It was (and to some extent remains) also a default title for celebrities, such as actresses. (The poet Dorothy Parker was often ...

unmarried: Encyclopedia II - Bachelor - Penal laws and customs

Bachelors, in the sense of unmarried men, have in many countries been subjected to penal laws. At Sparta, citizens who remained unmarried after a certain age suffered various penalties. They were not allowed to witness the gymnastic exercises of the maidens; and during winter they were compelled to march naked round the market-place, singing a song composed against themselves and expressing the justice of their punishment. The usual respect ...

unmarried: Encyclopedia II - De facto - Other usages

De facto racial segregation often occurs because users of a given facility, such as a library or school, tend to be residents of that neighborhood and so reflect its ethnic makeup. The facility tends to become racially or ethnically segregated without any law calling for de jure segregation, if the same applies to the neighborhood. A de facto monopoly is a system where many suppliers of a product are allowed, but the market is so completely dominated by one that the others might as well ...

unmarried: Encyclopedia II - De facto - Standards

A de facto standard is a technical or other standard that is so dominant that everybody seems to follow it like an authorized standard. The de jure standard may be different: one example is the act of speeding found on highways. Although the de jure standard is to drive at the speed limit or slower, in many places the de facto standard is to drive at the speed limit or slightly faster. Another example: there is no law preventing a 27th letter such as Þ (thorn) from being added to the alphabet; indee ...
