Calhoun was born and raised in Braintree, where he was a standout on the basketball, football, and baseball teams at Braintree High School. AEPi was founded in 1913 at New York University (NYU) by Charles C. Moskowitz and 10 other young, Jewish men. These men were Isador M. Glazer, Herman L. Krauss, Arthur E. Leopold, Arthur M. Lipkint, Emil Lustgarten, Benjamin M. Meyer, Charles J. Pintel, Maurice Plager, David K. Schafer, and Hyman Shulman. Their first pledge is thought to be Samuel L. Epstein. Mallett was born in Roaring Springs, Pennsylvania, on March 3, 1945. At age 10, his father passed away. At age 25, in 1973, he received a Ph.D. from Penn State University. Also that year, he received the Graduate Assistant Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 1975, he was appointed a job at the University of Connecticut as an assistant professor, where he continues to work today. In 1980, he was promoted to associate professor, and since 1987, he has been a professor. He has received two grants and many other distinctions.
