Uli Edel: Encyclopedia II - Last Exit to Brooklyn - Style

Last Exit to Brooklyn was written in an unusual style that ignores most conventions of grammar. Selby wrote most of the prose as if it was a story told from one friend to another at a bar rather than a novel, using coarse and casual language. He used slang-like conjunctions of words, such as tahell for "to hell" and yago for "you go." The paragraphs were often written in a stream of consciousness style with many parenthesis and fragments. Selby often indented n ...

Uli Edel: Encyclopedia II - The Mists of Avalon - Main cast

The Mists of Avalon - Morgaine. Morgaine is the main viewpoint character. She is a character with strong magical powers, capable of Second Sight and transfiguration. She is portrayed as a tragic character, torn between her loyalty to Avalon (which forces her to do atrocious things, most shocklingly, High Priestess Viviane makes her sleep with her own half-brother, King Arthur) and her unfulfilled love to Lancelot. She is doomed to witness the demise of the pagan ways of Avalon. In the end, however, s ...

Uli Edel: Encyclopedia II - King Lear - Points of debate

King Lear - Confusing opening. The modern reader of King Lear could benefit from the demystification of some subtleties in the text, as Shakespeare often brushes over details that are made clearer in his sources, and were perhaps more familiar to Elizabethan theatregoers than to modern ones. Scene one features King Lear testing the extent of his daughters' loyalty and love for him. He is preparing to abdicate. Lacking a male heir, he decides to divide his land between the sisters and, for two of the ...

In 1958, Selby started working on his first piece, The Queen Is Dead. At the time, Selby had a succession of jobs. Yet he continued to work on his fiction every night after his day job as a secretary, a gas station attendant, and a freelance copywriter. Uli Edel: Encyclopedia II - Last Exit to Brooklyn - Writing and Publication History

Last Exit to Brooklyn started as The Queen is Dead, one of several short stories Selby wrote about people he had met around Brooklyn while working as a copywriter and general laborer. The piece was published in three literary magazines in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Tralala also appeared in The Provincetown Review in 1961 and drew some intense criticism. The pieces later evolved into the full-length book, which was published in 1964 by Grove Press, which had previously publi ...

Uli Edel: Encyclopedia II - King Lear - Sources for King Lear

One of Shakespeare's sources was an earlier play, King Leir. In this play Cordella and the King of France serve Leir disguised as rustics. However, the ancient folk tale of Lear had existed in many versions prior to that, and it's possible that Shakespeare was familiar with them. Shakespeare's most important source is thought to be the second edition of The Chronicles of England, Scotlande, and Irelande by Raphael Holinshed, published in 1587. Holinshed himself found the story in the earlier Historia Regum Britanniae< ...

Uli Edel: Encyclopedia II - King Lear - Plot

The play begins with King Lear taking the decision to abdicate the throne and divide his kingdom equally among his three daughters: Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. The eldest two are married, but Cordelia is much sought after as a bride, partly because she is her father's favourite. However, when Lear attempts to auction off his kingdom to the most admiring and flattering of his daughters, the plan backfires. Cordelia refuses to outdo the flattery of her elder sisters, as she feels it would only cheapen her true feelings to flatter him purely f ...

Uli Edel: Encyclopedia II - The Mists of Avalon - Reception

The Mists of Avalon is lauded as one of the most original and emotional retelling of the familiar Arthurian legend. Bradley received much praise for convincing portrayal of the main protagonists, her respectful handling of the pagan ways of Avalon and for telling a story in which there is neither black and white or good and evil, but several truths. Critics point out that The Mists of Avalon writes a romanticized version of a "pagan culture" which never existed in that way, leaving out gory details like human sacrifices. ...
