Ulcerative colitis - Comparison to Crohn's disease.
Ulcerative colitis is similar to Crohn's disease, but there are characteristic differences. Ulcerative colitis affects only the colon and cannot "migrate" to the small intestine, while Crohn's disease can affect the entire digestive tract. Complete colon removal can thus be considered a "cure" for ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is usually confined to the mucosal and submucosal lining of the colon, and affects whole areas of intestine. Crohn's disease, on ...

 | | | ulcerative colitis: Encyclopedia II - Ulcerative colitis - CauseThe cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown, although infective agents have been suspected, and there is a genetic component to susceptibility. Immune system over-activity has also been suspected as a cause.
There is much research currently being conducted in this area, and some new theories and medications show promising results. While a definitive cause of ulcerative colitis may never be discovered (since it is highly possible that it is a result of a combination of environmental, genetical, bacterial and other factors), an effective treatm ...

 | | | ulcerative colitis: Encyclopedia II - Ulcerative colitis - TreatmentAlthough much progress has been made in the last 20 years, in understanding and treating the disease, a definitive treatment or cure for Ulcerative colitis still eludes modern medicine. Therefore, treatment for Ulcerative colitis actually aims at inducing remission, preventing relapse, improving nutritional deficiency, and ensuring normal growth and development in child patients. This is achieved primarily through medication, and sometimes surgery.
Anti-inflammatory drugs (such as sulfasalazine or mesalamine) are often used, and ...

 | | | ulcerative colitis: Encyclopedia II - Ulcerative colitis - CoursePeople with ulcerative colitis may initially have bloody diarrhea (the severity of which is variable from time to time). Because of destruction of the nerves in the bowel, movement may be impaired, and the intestine may dilate. This may, in some cases, result in an extreme diarrheal disease - toxic megacolon, however the probability of occurrence is very low, and is further reduced by regular routine surveillance by colonoscopy. Eventually the inflamed mucosa may develop a risk of malignancy, requiring biopsy every few months. Sometimes the ...

In the 1977 NFL Draft he was the second-to-last pick by the Oakland Raiders, who traded him to San Diego for his rookie year. He attended college at the University of California at Davis.
In his rookie year in 1978, Rolf made all 12 of his 12 field goals. In the off-season before the 1978 season, his second season, Rolf developed chronic fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. He learned that he had ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease. Despite staying in the hospital for weeks at end, he made 34 of 38 field goals that year. ...

 | | | ulcerative colitis: Encyclopedia II - Rolf Benirschke - Living with ulcerative colitisHowever, the problem worsened in the 1979 season, when, on the team plane coming home from a road trip, Rolf collapsed. He underwent two surgeries to remove his large intestine and he was in the intensive care unit for weeks. When released form the hospital, Rolf was only 123 pounds and had to adjust to life with two ostomy appliances.
On Sunday, November 18, 1979, Rolf made his dramatic return to the Chargers in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. While he did not play, he was named honorary team captain for the game, which was a ...

 | | | ulcerative colitis: Encyclopedia II - Inflammatory bowel disease - FormsMain forms of IBD:
Crohn's disease
Ulcerative colitis (UC)
The main difference between the two is the location and nature of the inflammatory changes in the gut. Crohn's can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from mouth to anus (skip lesions), although a majority of the cases start in the terminal ileum. Ulcerative colitis, in contrast, is restricted to the colon, and spares the anus.
Microscopically, ulcerative colitis is restricted to the mucosa (epithelial lining of the gut), ...
