In the 14th century, Crimean Tatars traded in the Odessa region. The town was ruled by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, then known as Chadžibėjus (Turkish Hacibey; spelled also as Khajibei, Khadzhibei, or Gadzhibei, Russian: Хаджибей). In the AD 15th century, nomadic Tatars under the suzerainty of the Khanate of Crimea inhabited what is now the Odessa region.
