Twins: Encyclopedia - Twin

The term twin most notably refers to two individuals (or one of two individuals) who have shared the same uterus (womb) and are usually, but not necessarily, born on the same day. A fetus alone in the womb is called a singleton. Due to the limited size of the mother's womb, multiple pregnancy is much less likely to carry to full term than singleton birth (twins usually around 34 to 36 weeks). Since some premature births often have health consequence to the babies, twins birth are often handled with special procedures. Including:

Twins: Encyclopedia - Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome

Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS, also known as Feto-Fetal Transfusion Syndrome (FFTS) and Twin Oligohydramnios-Polyhydramnios Sequence (TOPS)) is a disorder that can affect identical twin or higher multiple pregnancies where two or more fetuses share a common (monochorionic) placenta. TTTS is believed to affect roughly 1 in 1000 pregnancies. TTTS was first described by a German obstetrician, Friedrich Schatz, in 1875. Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome - Etiology. In virtually all the mythology of the world, the Twin represents some "other" aspect of the Self, a doppelganger in some way. Often the twin is the "evil twin", or one may be human and one semi-divine. In myth, the twin may be a brother, or a soul-mate, such as the "civilized" Gilgamesh and the "wild" Enkidu. Twins: Encyclopedia - Crystal twinning

Crystal twinning occurs when two separate crystals share some of the same crystal lattice points in a symmetrical manner. The result is an intergrowth of two separate crystals in a variety of specific configurations. A twin boundary or composition surface separates the two crystals. Crystallographers classify twinned crystals by a number of twin laws. These twin laws are specific to the crystal system. The type of twinn ...

Twins: Encyclopedia - Twin study

A twin study is a kind of genetic study done to determine heritability. The premise is that since identical twins (especially identical twins raised apart) have identical genotypes, differences between them are solely due to environmental factors. By examining the degree to which twins are differentiated, a study may determine the extent to which a particular trait is influenced by genes or the environment. Twin study - History. Twins: Encyclopedia - Vanishing twin

A vanishing twin, also called twin embolisation syndrome' or foetus papiricus, is the term for a fetus who is partially or completely reabsorbed during the pregnancy, as opposed to a normal birth or a miscarriage. One theory for the creation of a vanishing twin is due to an atypical fertilization process. Fraternal twins usually develop by the fertilization of two ova by two sperm each of which grow in one common sac within the womb. This is called dizygotic monochorionic twins. Vanishing twin is thought to occur when two difference sacs are formed causing one, the vanishing twin, to be squished fl ...

Twins: Encyclopedia - Twin paradox

The twin paradox, sometimes called the "clock paradox", stems from Paul Langevin's 1911 thought experiment in special relativity: one of two twin brothers, undertakes a long space journey with a high-speed rocket at almost the speed of light, while the other twin remains on Earth. When the traveler returns to Earth, he is younger than the twin who stayed put. Or, as first stated by Albert Einstein (1911): If we placed a living organism in a box ... one could arrange that the organism, after any arbitrary lengthy flight, coul ...

Twins: Encyclopedia - Twin prime conjecture

The twin prime conjecture is a famous problem in number theory that involves prime numbers. It states: There are an infinite number of primes p such that p + 2 is also prime. Such a pair of prime numbers is called a twin prime. The conjecture has been researched by many number theorists. Mathematicians believe the conjecture to be true, based only on numerical evidence and heuristic r ...

Twins: Encyclopedia - Twin-lens reflex camera

A twin-lens reflex camera (TLR) is a type of camera with two objective lenses of the same focal length. One of the lenses is the photographic objective (the lens that takes the picture), while the other is used for the waist-level viewfinder system. In addition to the objective, the viewfinder consists of a 45-degree mirror (the reason for the word reflex in the name), a matte focusing screen at the top of the camera, and a pop-up hood surrounding it. The two objectives are connected, so that the focus shown on the focusing screen will be exactly the same as on th ...

Twins: Encyclopedia II - Twin - Types of twins

Twin - Fraternal twins. Fraternal twins (commonly known as "non-identical twins") usually occur when two fertilized eggs are implanted in the uterine wall at the same time. The two eggs form two zygotes, and these twins are therefore also known as dizygotic. Dizygotic twins, like any siblings, have a very small chance of having the exact same chromosome profile, but most likely have a number of different chromosomes that distinguish them. Dizygotic twins may be a different sex or the sam ...

Twins: Encyclopedia II - Twin - Human twins

Historically, about 1 in 80 human births (1.2%) has been the result of a twin pregnancy. The rate of twinning varies greatly among ethnic groups, ranging as high as about 6% for the Yoruba or 10% for a tiny Brazilian village (see [1]). The widespread use of fertility drugs causing hyperovulation (stimulated release of multiple eggs by the mother) has caused what some call an "epidemic of multiple births". In 2001, for the first time ever in the US, the twinning rate exceeded 3% of all births. Thus, approximately 6% of childre ...
