Trees: Encyclopedia II - Rainforest - Trees
There are several common characteristics of tropical trees. Tropical species frequently possess one or more of the following attributes not commonly seen in trees of higher latitudes. Many species have broad, woody flanges (buttresses) at the base of the trunk. Originally believed to help support the tree, now it is believed that the buttresses channel stem flow and its dissolved nutrients to the roots. Large leaves are common among trees of the C layer. Young individuals of trees destined for the B and A layers may also have l ...

Trees: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Trees

Trees [230]

  • To dream of trees in new foliage, foretells a happy consummation of hopes and desires. Dead trees signal sorrow and loss.
  • To climb a tree is a sign of swift elevation and preferment.
  • To cut one down, or pull it up by the roots, denotes that you will waste your energies and wealth foolishly.
  • To see green tress newly felled, portends unhappiness coming unexpectedly upon scenes of enjoyment, or prosperity.

Flower essences are an alternative healing remedy that is used specifically for emotional healing. Flower essences, also called flower remedies, are made from the blooms of specific flowering plants and trees. Flower essences are so useful for emotional sensitivity that it is almost as though they were made exactly for the issue of empathic ability.

Trees: Apple Divination - The Symbolism of Apples

We have all heard and used the expression, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." This expression is based on a very old superstition, and is one of many associated with apples. You have probably also held an apple in one hand and twisted the stem while reciting the alphabet to ascertain the initial of that "special someone" - the apple of our eye. In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, we are moved by the gracious and dignified austerity of Hester Prynne's declaration that "A is for Apple." There is a very long tradition of prediction and divination with apples. A great many of them, of course, are associated with love and relationships.

Trees: Man and Environment: A Symbiotic Bond

The tradition of sanctifying various trees and plants dates back to the Vedic period. Though wood as a fuel was a basic need and trees in general were treated with care and respect, some trees such as the Peepal, Banyan and Neem, commanded more respect than others.

The Tulsi (Basil) plant was grown in every household in the centre of the courtyard and ritually watered. The rituals served an important purpose - they made people aware of the environment and its importance and so indirectly helped preserve and nurture it.

Trees: Five Elements Of Vastu

The whole universe is made up of five basic elements, the earth, water, fire, air and space. Our body is also made up of these five basic elements of nature. The  pancha-mahabhootas  are related to our five senses of smell, taste, hearing, touch and sight. Any imbalance in our external and internal Vastu translates into unhappy situations. Vastu teaches the individual to live in balance and harmony with the panchamahabhootas.

Trees: Why do Hindus worship so many gods and goddesses?

Hinduism and Polytheism

According to the tenets of Hinduism, God is one as well as many. He is to be found every where and in every thing. He is there in the sky, in the rivers, in the plants and trees and even in a particle of dust. He is an enigma, because He is in many things at a time and is many things at a time. He is visible as well as invisible. He is here and He is there. He is above and He is below. He is with forms and also without form. He speaks and He speaks not. He is the self and also the not'self. To say that this is God and this is not is perhaps much more sacrilegious, if there is anything like sacrilegious in the world of God, than seeing God in images and idols and worshipping Him.

Trees: Sai Baba Dictionary on Krishna about vriksha

Trees,:

Trees, (Krishna about) [vriksha]: (SB 10:22)

'O Stoka Krishna and Ams'u; o S'ridama, Subala and Arjuna; o Vis'ala, Vrishabha and Ojasvi; o Devaprastha and Varuthapa, just see these ones so fortunate whose life is only there for the higher purpose of keeping off the rain, the wind, the heat and the snow they bear for us.

(33) Oh how superior the birth of these trees that, like great souls do, give support to all living entities; for certain will no person in need ever go away disappointed by them

(34) By their leaves, flowers and fruits; shade and roots, bark and wood; by their fragrance, sap ashes, pulp and shoots they award all things desirable.

(35) It is to each living being to live up to this perfection of birth in this world: to be with ones life, wealth, intelligence and words towards the embodied always of the highest good in ones dutiful activities [see also the vaishnava pranama].'

Trees: The Secret of Agni

The Secret of Agni (Agni Rahasya):

In ancient Vedic thought, the individual soul was symbolized by fire. Our inner soul, hidden like a secret flame deep within our hearts, abides inextinguishable throughout all our states of consciousness of waking, dream and deep sleep. It endures as the witness through our every birth and death, through all the many sojourns in the various worlds and planes of existence of our soulŐs vast manifestation.

Trees: Spiritual Theosophical Dictionary on Trees of Life

Trees of Life. From the highest antiquity trees were connected with the gods and mystical forces in nature.

Every nation had its sacred tree, with its peculiar characteristics and attributes based on natural, and also occasionally on occult properties, as expounded in the esoteric teachings. Thus the peepul or Ashvattha of India, the abode of Pitris (elementals in fact) of a lower order, became the Bo-tree or ficus religiosa of the Buddhists the world over, since Gautama Buddha reached the highest knowledge and Nirvana under such a tree. The ash tree, Yggdrasil, is the world-tree of the Norsemen or Scandinavians.

The banyan tree is the symbol of spirit and matter, descending to the earth, striking root, and then re-ascending heavenward again. The triple-leaved palasa is a symbol of the triple essence in the Universe - Spirit, Soul, Matter.

The dark cypress was the world-tree of Mexico, and is now with the Christians and Mahomedans the emblem of death, of peace and rest. The fir was held sacred in Egypt, and its cone was carried in religious processions, though now it has almost disappeared from the land of the mummies; so also was the sycamore, the tamarisk, the palm and the vine.

The sycamore was the Tree of Life in Egypt, and also in Assyria. It was sacred to Hathor at Heliopolis; and is now sacred in the same place to the Virgin Mary. Its juice was precious by virtue of its occult powers, as the Soma is with Brahmans, and Haoma with the Parsis. " The fruit and sap of the Tree of Life bestow immortality." A large volume might be written upon these sacred trees of antiquity, the reverence for some of which has survived to this day, without exhausting the subject.

Trees: An Islamic View of Creation Life

Science and Spirituality: An Islamic View of Creation & Life

According to Islamic tradition, life is God's creation - regardless of whether life was specially created or resulted from evolution. Evolution itself is a process of creation as admitted by Darwin in The Origin of Species.

Creation falls into four categories - inanimate matter, plants, animals and human beings. According to Islam, all four are separate creations. Among living things, a number of species co-exist, all having been created separately. There is doubtless some similarity in physical attributes; yet, each has a permanent, separate existence. There is no concept of a missing link in Islam.

Trees: A Message from Mayan Elder Hunbatz Men

Maya Elder, Hunbatz Men sent a message to me, and ask that I share it. In the message is a clue to how we can bridge the gaps between the dimensions easily and safely. It also shares how humanity can help keep the creative spirit/essence alive for Mother Earth, the plants and animals by honoring and respecting the things we can not yet see. As creators of our reality it is up to us to "do the work" as Hunbatz puts it. It is up to us to work with Hunab K'u, giver of movement and measure, and honoring spirit so it does not disappear and consequently our beautiful physical reality too.

John Kostura
