Transit: Encyclopedia II - Mississauga Transit - Terminals

The City Centre Bus Terminal — is located at 200 Rathburn Road West, right across from Square One Shopping Centre — is the key bus terminal, serving both Mississauga Transit and GO Transit buses; It opened in October 1997, replacing a loop at the other side of the mall. Buses utilize the "upper" level; the access from the mall is on lower ground, where a taxi stand is located, along with washroom facilities. The terminal is accessible by elevator, and serves over 20 fixed routes, including: 3 Bloor, Isli ...

Transit: Encyclopedia II - Calgary Transit - History

What would eventually become Calgary Transit began as the Calgary Municipal Railway in 1909, with twelve electric streetcars serving what was at the time a city of 30,000. This streetcar service expanded throughout the next thirty years (including the Depression) until 1946, when the company was renamed to Calgary Transit System as gasoline-powered vehicles began replacing the local streetcars (as was common at the time). Eventually the electric trolley lines were phased out together - to be replaced by diesel buses. In 1972, CTS a ...

Transit: Encyclopedia II - Astronomical transit - Mutual planetary transits and occultations

In rare cases, one planet can transit in front of another. The next time this will happen (as seen from Earth) will be on November 22, 2065 at about 12:43 UTC, when Venus near superior conjunction (with an angular diameter of 10.6") will transit in front of Jupiter (with an angular diameter of 30.9"); however, this will take place only 8° west of the Sun, and will therefore not be visible to the unaided/unprotected eye. When the nearer object has a larger angular diameter than the farther object, thus covering it completely, the event is no ...

Transit: Encyclopedia II - Transit of Venus - Conjunctions of Venus with the Sun

Normally when the Earth and Venus are in conjunction they are not aligned with the Sun. Venus' orbit is inclined by 3.4° to the Earth's so it appears to pass under (or over) the Sun in the sky. Transits occur when the two planets happen to be in conjunction at (or very near) the points where their orbital planes cross. Although 3.4° may not seem like much, Venus can be as far as 9.6° from the Sun when viewed from the Earth at inferior conjunction. Since the angular diameter of the Sun is about half a degree, Venus may appear to pass above or below ...

Transit: Encyclopedia II - Transition metal - Properties

Transition elements tend to have high tensile strength, density and melting and boiling points. As with many properties of transition metals, this is due to d orbital electrons' ability to delocalise within the metal lattice. In metallic substances, the more electrons shared between nuclei, the stronger the metal. There are several common characteristic properties of transition elements: They form coloured compounds They can have a variety of different oxidation states They are good catalysts ...

Transit: Encyclopedia II - Transitional fossil - Transitional forms vs. intermediate forms

The terms 'transitional' and 'intermediate' are for the most part used as synonyms to each other. However, a distinction between the two can be made: Transitional can be used for those forms that do not have a significant amount of unique derived traits that the derived relative does not possess as well. In other words: a transitional is morphologically close (if not identical) to the actual common ancestor of itself and the derived relative. Intermediate can be used for those forms that do have a larg ...

Transit: Encyclopedia II - Transit satellite - History

The system was developed by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory JHUAPL for the US Navy. The first successful tests of the system were made in 1960. The satellites (known as OSCAR or NOVA satellites) used in the system were placed in low polar orbits, at an altitude of 600 nautical miles (1,100 km), with an orbital period of about 106 minutes. A constellation of five satellites was required to provide global coverage. While the system was operational, at least ten satellites – one spare for each satellite in the basic ...

Transit: Encyclopedia II - Transit of Venus - Cultural meaning

In many cultures of the world, the transit of Venus across the Sun has been regarded as a rare and therefore an important event that marks major changes in human history. This is true for the Maya and other ancient American civilizations, for the Indian Vedic traditions and for the Western astrology of Mesopotamian origin. It has been claimed that a transit led to the ancient Greeks celebrating the Ancient Olympics every four years as a form of commemoration. The efforts of Guillaume Le Gentil to observe the transit of Venus in different parts of the globe, became the subject of the fictiona ...

Transit: Encyclopedia II - GO Transit - Future expansion

GO Transit has a ten-year plan in place, which includes provisions for new train stations, more parking spaces at existing stations, and increasing service on some (or all) existing train lines. While no new train lines are being planned, here are some of the improvements being planned, or in the process of completion: Construction of the Mount Pleasant Station on the Georgetown line (Highway 7 and Creditview Road) continues, but the station has been open for service since February 2005. Expanding the Highway 407 bus se ...

Transit: Encyclopedia II - Transit of minor planets - Asteroids

Most asteroids orbit in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and thus transits of asteroids viewed by an observer on Jupiter would not be uncommon, although the high inclination of many asteroid orbits makes this less common that it would be otherwise. For instance, 4 Vesta transits the Sun for observers on Jupiter on January 4, 2044, with an angular diameter of 0.24". However, it is interesting to consider whet ...
