Laud became a researcher working for Conservative Members of Parliament in the mid-1980s. He fought a seat in Wandsworth council's Graveney ward in May 1986, and won 937 votes, not quite enough to secure a seat. He gained some notability as the only black member of the Monday Club. During his career, Laud has written speeches for several well-known Conservatives including Margaret Thatcher, Michael Heseltine and Alan Clark. He is mentioned in John Major's autobiography. On November 27, 1975, Ross McWhirter was shot dead by two Irish Republican Army gunmen. Mr McWhirter was hit at close range in the head and chest at 18:45 GMT.
