Toruń: Encyclopedia II - Hanseatic League - History

The origins of the League are generally traced to the foundation of the new town of Lübeck in 1158/1159 after the capture of the area by Henry the Lion of Saxony. German domination of trade in the Baltic was achieved with striking speed over the next century and Lübeck became a central node in all the sea trade that linked the ar ...

History of Poland 1945–1989 - Wartime devastation. Poland suffered enormous losses during World War II. Germany used the system of military districts (German: Wehrkreis) with an aim of relieving field commanders of as much purely administrative work as possible, and at providing as regular as possible a flow of trained recruits and of supplies to the Field Army. Toruń: Encyclopedia II - Partitions of Poland - History

Partitions of Poland - Prelude. One could characterise Poland-Lithuania before the partitions as already not a completely sovereign state: in modern terms it would be a Russian satellite state, with Russian Emperors effectively choosing Polish kings. During the reign of Władysław IV (1632-48), the liberum veto had evolved. This policy of parliamentary procedure was based on the assumption of the political equality of every "gentleman", with the corollary that unanimous consent was required for all measures. A s ...

Toruń: Encyclopedia II - Antoni Grabowski - Education and career

Soon after his birth, Grabowski's family moved from Nowe Dobre to Thorn (Toruń). Due to his parents' poverty, Grabowski had to start working soon after leaving junior school. Nevertheless he prepared himself, driven by a great desire to learn, to take the entrance exam for grammar school (Gymnasium), which he passed with flying colours. At the Nicolaus Copernicus School in Thorn he demonstrated his knowledge to be far greater than that of others of his own age and was twice moved into a higher class. In 1879, the family's financial situation improved and, after his Abitur exam, Grabowski studied philosophy and ...

Toruń: Encyclopedia II - Poland - History

Poland began to form into a recognizable unitary and territorial entity around the middle of the 10th century under the Piast dynasty. Poland's first historically documented ruler, Mieszko I, was baptized in 966, adopting Catholic Christianity as the country's new official religion, to which the bulk of the population converted in the course of the next century. In the 12th century Poland fragmented into several smaller states, which were later ravaged by the Mongol armies of the Golden Horde in 1241. In 1320 Władysław I became the King of ...

The first traces of human settlement in the region come from ca. 14-15,000 years ago. They are many traces of settlements made by the Lusatian culture (13th-5th century BC), including above-ground water housings and artificially created islands. However, these tribes only began to coordinate after the 12th century when they were subje ...

Toruń: Encyclopedia II - Vistula - History

It is not known whether the name Vistula is Indo-European or pre-Indo-European. The name was first recorded by Pliny in AD 77 in his Natural History. He uses Vistula (4.52, 4.89) with an alternative spelling, Vistillus (3.06). The Vistula River ran into the Mare Suebicum, which we know as the Baltic Sea. From all the sources one can deduce that near the delta lived the tribes of the Suebi and Burgundians, and on both banks the Goths (see also Gothiscandza and Wielbark culture). The Goths, at least, spoke East Germanic. East of ...

At its simplest, a defensive wall consists of a wall enclosure and its gates. For the most part, the top of the walls were accessible, with the outside of the walls having tall parapets with embrasures or merlons. In addition to this, many different enhancements were made over the course of the centuries: City ditch: a ditch dug in front of the walls, occasionally filled with water.
