Top Gun - Inspirations.
The primary inspiration for the film was discovered by producer Jerry Bruckheimer when he found an article in the May 1983 issue of California magazine which would form the basis of the film. The article, Top Guns, was about fighter pilots at the Miramar Naval Air Station, located near San Diego, nicknamed "Fightertown USA".

The Top Gun soundtrack is one of the most popular soundtracks to date, and some say that it captured the heart of the 1980s with its music.
Harold Faltermeyer, who previously worked with both Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson on the film Flashdance and Beverly Hills Cop was sent the script of Top Gun by Bruckheimer before filming even had even started. Top Gun - Awards.
"Take My Breath Away" by Berlin (which is played during the Maverick and Charlie love scene) received the Best Song Oscar in 1987. Also in 1987, "Top Gun Anthem" by Harold Faltermeyer and Steve Stevens won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. The film was also nominated for three Oscars in that year for Best Sound Effects Editing, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound.

Throughout the film 'enemy' fighters are identified as 'MiG-28s'. This designation was never used for a Soviet fighter aircraft in real life; the hostile jets were actually repainted Northrop F-5E Tiger IIs for the single-seat jets, and T-38 Talons for the two-seater jets. Training adversary aircraft were Douglas A-4 Skyhawks.
Although not identified in the film, according to the 2004 DVD audio commentary, the enemy fighters are North Korean in origin.
