| | | | Top Gun: Encyclopedia II - F-14 Tomcat - DevelopmentThe F-14 was developed to take the place of the aborted General Dynamics F-111B (also called the TFX), a navalized version of the U.S. Air Force tactical strike aircraft. Intended to provide fleet air defense, the F-111B proved unmaneuverable, overweight, and, in general, poorly suited to aircraft carrier operations. This led to its cancellation in 1968.
Early in development, the Tomcat was already shown to have advantages over the failing F-111B. It was smaller, lighter, and more fuel-efficient than the TFX. Ironically, much of the F-14's equipment was re-used from the TFX, including the AN/AWG-9 radar, AIM-54 Phoenix missile ...

| | | | Top Gun: Encyclopedia II - The Jim Rome Show - The ClonesThe "Clones" are what Rome calls the listeners of the show. Their devotion to Rome along with their use of "smack" makes them different from normal people, but all the same as each other. Unfortunately, callers often only reiterate Rome's exact take on an issue. During the day, Rome saves the recordings of the best calls in the rack (with the term "rack him" or "rack her" after a call, as a signal to the audience that he enjoyed the caller's take). At the end of the show, The Huge Call of the Day (the best call in Rome's opinion) is r ...

| | | | | Top Gun: Encyclopedia II - Roger Avary - The Tarantino YearsEarly in his career, Avary made a number of small contributions to some of Quentin Tarantino's movies. He worked as a crew member on Tarantino's unfinished first film, My Best Friend's Birthday. He had at one point written an unfinished, 80-page script called "The Open Road", which he described as being about the "odd couple relationship between an uptight business man and an out-of-control hitch-hiker who travel into a Hellish mid-Western town together" and compared to Martin Scorsese's After Hours. Having lost interest in the ...

| | | | Top Gun: Encyclopedia II - Tony Scott - The 1980sGrieving, Scott nevertheless persisted in trying to kickstart a feature film career. Among the projects interesting him was an adaptation of the Anne Rice novel Interview with the Vampire then in development. MGM, however, had a vampire yarn of their own that they wanted Scott to direct, and after failing to convince the company to drop their project and tackle Interview instead, Scott instead decided to accept the MGM project, and pour into it all of the visual design concepts he had bandied about for Interview. In 1982, Scot ...

| | | | Top Gun: Encyclopedia II - True Romance - True Romance scriptAs it turned out, the script for True Romance had been sold when Tarantino was introduced to director Tony Scott. Scott read both of Tarantino's scripts, True Romance and Natural Born Killers, and decided to direct True Romance. Other than the ending (Clarence was shot dead during the climactic Mexican Standoff in the script) and the ordering of the scenes, Scott's film uses Tarantino's original script. Originally, the film was written to begin with the same "I'd fuck Elvis" scene, then the opening credits as the ...

| | | | Top Gun: Encyclopedia II - X-Play - Constant themesConstant themes show up throughout the series. Such themes include:
Adam and Morgan's eternal hatred for card battle games such as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Japanese dating simulation games, the repetitiveness of the Dynasty Warriors and Mega Man series, and the glut of redundant World War II strategy and first-person shooter games on the market.
Like the above, there is a constant hate (mostly by Adam) for the dreaded "escort mission" usually seen in first-person shooters where the player is forced to keep an NPC character, wh ...

However, Bates was bogged down in a scandal involving charges of sexual harassment.
