Ixodidae - Hard ticks Argasidae - Soft ticks Tick is the common name for the small wingless arachnids that, along with mites, constitute the order Acarina. Ticks are ectoparasites (external parasites), living by hematophagy on the blood of mammals, birds, and occasionally reptiles and amphibians. ticking: Encyclopedia II - Tick - Ticks as disease vectors
Hard ticks can transmit human diseases such as relapsing fever, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, equine encephalitis and several forms of ehrlichiosis. Additionally, they are responsible for transmitting livestock diseases, including babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria can be transmitted by soft ticks. Generally, tick-borne diseases correspond to a specific tick-host combination, and are limited in their geographical extent. According to the Rhode Island Department of Health, roughly 70% of people who develop Lyme ...

ticking: Encyclopedia II - Tick - Location

Ticks are often found in tall grass, where they will rest themselves at the tip of a blade so as to attach themselves to a passing animal or human. It is a common misconception that the tick can jump from the plant onto the host. Physical contact is the only method of transportation for ticks. They will generally drop off of the animal when full, but this may take several days. Ticks contain a structure in their mouth area that allows them to anchor themselves firmly in place while sucking blood. Pulling a tick out forcefully may squeeze contents of the tick back into the bite and often leaves the mouthpiece behind, which may r ...

ticking: Encyclopedia - Tick checkmark

A tick (known as a checkmark or check in American English) is a mark (✓) used to indicate the concept "yes", for example "yes, this has been verified" or "yes, I agree". Its opposite is the cross (✗), although the cross can also be positive, for example in elections. As a verb, to tick (off) or to check (off) means to add such a mark. It is quite common, especially on printed forms, printed documents, and computers, for there to be squares in which to place ticks. In America, it is more common for people to ch ...

ticking: From the Finite to the Infinite

Who can measure the infinity of time? The flow of time is permanent; so it would flow on even if all the clocks in the world stopped ticking.

Night and day, months and years roll on, but to the individual, the period of time between his birth and death assumes prime importance. From this measure of time emerges the ethical value of that time.

ticking: Discover your soul

The human species is a three part being - mind, body and spirit. The mind is what drives us, the spirit is our personality or ego, and the body is the vehicle that is used to experience the physical world. To experience physicality, one needs to be physical, it's natural then to be focused on the body and its needs.

Most all of our waking hours are centred on what the body wants to experience. There is nothing wrong with this arrangement, and it works flawlessly and on auto-pilot throughout our lifetimes with or without our awareness of what makes it tick.

ticking: Encyclopedia - Witches Discworld

A major subset of the Discworld novels of Terry Pratchett involve the witches of Lancre. They are closely based on witches in British folklore, combined with modern Wicca and a slightly tongue-in-cheek reinterpretation of the Triple Goddess. Witch magic is very different from the wizard magic taught in the Unseen University, and consists largely of finding the right lever that makes everything else work. Witches rarely do any magic, in fact, relying more on common sense, hard work, and a peculiar brand of psychology know ...

ticking: Encyclopedia - Hematophagy

Hematophagy is the habit of certain animals of feeding on blood (from the Greek words, haima, blood, and phagein, eat). Since blood is a fluid tissue rich in nutritious proteins and lipids and can be taken without enormous effort, hematophagy has evolved as a preferred form of feeding in many small animals, such as worms and arthropods. Some intestinal helminth worms, such as the Ascaris, feed on blood extracted from the capillaries of the gut and about 75% of all species of leeches (Hirudo medicinalis), a free-li ...

The castor oil plant (Ricinus communis) is a plant species of the Euphorbiaceae and the sole member of the genus Ricinus and of the subtribe Ricininae. It is the origin of the castor bean which, despite its name, is not a true bean. The name Ricinus is a Latin word for tick; the seed is so named because it has markings and a bump at the end which resemble certain ticks. It is the source of castor oil, which has a wide variety of uses, and ricin, ...

ticking: Encyclopedia - Bicolor cat

A bicolor cat has white fur combined with fur of some other colour, for example black- in this case they are often referred to as a Tuxedo Cat. Bicolours are found in many breeds as well as being common in domestic longhair cats and domestic shorthair cats. Bicolour occurs because there is a white spotting gene present along with a recessive allele of the agouti gene, which evens out the usual striped pattern of the colours of the coat. In contrast, tabby cats have an agouti gene that produces striping of the coat. The Abyssinian has agouti with dilution (ticked tabby), giving the a ...
