 | | | Thought: Encyclopedia II - Thomas Hill Green - ThoughtHume's empiricism, combined with a belief in biological evolution (derived from Herbert Spencer), was the chief feature in English thought during the third quarter of the 19th century. Green represents primarily the reaction against doctrines which, when carried out to their logical conclusion, not only "rendered all philosophy futile," but were fatal to practical life. By reducing the human mind to a series of unrelated atomic sensations, this teaching destroyed the possibility of knowledge, and further, by representing man as a "being who ...

 | | | Thought: Encyclopedia II - Louis Althusser - ThoughtAlthusser's earlier works include the influential volume Reading Capital, which collects the work of Althusser and his students on an intensive philosophical re-reading of Marx's Capital. The book reflects on the philosophical status of Marxist theory as "critique of political economy," and on its object. The current English edition of this work includes only the essays of Althusser and Étienne Balibar, while the original French edition contains additional contributions from Jacques Ranciere and Pierre Macherey, among others. ...

 | | | Thought: Encyclopedia II - Julian Lincoln Simon - ThoughtHis 1984 book The Resourceful Earth (co-authored by Herman Kahn), is a criticism of the conventional wisdom of population growth and resource consumption and a direct response to the Global 2000 report. In it, Simon challenged the notion of a pending Malthusian catastrophe—that an increase in population has negative economic consequences; that population is a drain on natural resources; and that we stand at risk of running out of resources through over-consumption. His critique was praised by Nobel Laureate economist Friedrich Hayek, but also attracted many critic ...

 | | | Thought: Encyclopedia II - Albert Jay Nock - ThoughtDescribing himself as a "philosophical anarchist", Nock called for a basically conservative and bourgeois vision of society free from the influence of the political state. He described the state as that which "claims and exercises the monopoly of crime". He opposed centralization, regulation, the income tax, and mandatory education, along with what he saw as the degradation of society. He denounced in equal terms all forms of totalitarianism, including "Bolshevism ... Fascism, Hitlerism, Marxism, [and] Communism", but was also harshly critic ...

 | | | Thought:
Effect of Thought on Health and the BodyDisease
and health, like circumstances, are rooted in thought. Sickly thoughts will
express themselves through a sickly body. Thoughts of fear have been known to
kill a man as speedily as a bullet, and they are continually killing thousands
of people just as surely though less rapidly. The people who live in fear of
disease are the people who get it. Anxiety quickly demoralizes the whole body,
and lays it open to the entrance of disease, while impure thoughts, even if not
physically indulged, will soon shatter the nervous system.

 | | | Thought: Thought and PurposeUntil
thought is linked with purpose, there is no intelligent accomplishment. With
the majority the bark of thought is allowed to "drift" upon the ocean
of life. Aimlessness is a vice, and such drifting must not continue for him who
would steer clear of catastrophe and destruction.

 | | | Thought: Be Aware of Thought, Word and Action
We acquire knowledge, but we lack awareness. Awareness arises when knowledge accompanies action. Mere acquisition of knowledge does not mean that such knowledge will translate into action. For instance, most of us know that if you smoke cigarettes, you are susceptible to cancer. Cigarette smokers see the statutory warning imprinted on the cigarette packs: ''Smoking is injurious to health’’. Nevertheless, they continue to smoke. But if one day, the smoker does begin to suffer from ill-health on account of his smoking, then, the knowledge turns into awareness - through direct experience - that smoking could indeed be injurious to health.

Spiritual - Theosophy
Dictionary on
Thought
Thought In The Secret Doctrine, used in senses quite different from the ordinary: abstract absolute thought, of which mind is a concrete manifestation, or of which voice or the Logos is a manifestation. Pymander is quoted as saying that passive or unconscious mind generates active idea -- and active idea here is the same as the activity of the Logos. Thought, impressed on the astral light, exists in eternity, whether active or passive. Kriyasakti, one of the innate human powers, is the power which thought has of expressing itself analogically in action. Thoughts are imbodied elemental energies. The human brain does not create them, it only transmits them, because the human brain is but the vehicle transmitting intellectual, mental, and emotional energy from the monadic center within, and this monadic center itself originates thought.

 | | | Thought: Significant Gravity Of Deep Thought
Swiss scientists have recently discovered that sending a very weak current to the back of the right side of the brain triggered an out-of-body experience (OBE) for the patient. This OBE could be produced at will whenever a particular part of the brain was stimulated by an electric current. OBE is also one of the major outcomes of yoga and is mentioned in the vibhuti pad of Patanjali's Yoga Darshan . Naturally a yogi has to practise years of tapasya or meditation before she can achieve an OBE and sense of levitation. Interestingly, technology seems to allow this pleasurable experience quite easily.
