Theodosius Dobzhansky - Early life. Dobzhansky was born in Nemirov, Ukraine then part of Imperial Russia. An only child, his father Grigory Dobzhansky was a mathematics teacher, and his mother was Sophia Voinarsky. In 1910 the family moved to Kiev. At high school, Dobzhansky collected butterflies and decided to become a biologist. In 1915 he met Victor Luchnik who convinced him to specialise on beetles instead. Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia - Answers in Genesis

Answers in Genesis (AiG) is a not-for-profit Christian apologetics ministry with a particular focus on Young Earth Creationism, and a literal interpretation of the first chapters of the Book of Genesis. They state that this is 'secondary in importance to the proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ' [1]. AiG employs a staff exclusively of Christian evangelicals, some who have earned Ph.D. degrees from secular universities in various sciences including biology, geology, and astrophysics. Their literal interpretation of ...

Darwin on Trial (ISBN 0830813241) is a controversial 1991 book by the University of California, Berkeley law professor Phillip E. Johnson. A neo-creationist polemic, Darwin on Trial is considered to be part of the central canon of the intelligent design movement, of which Johnson is considered "the father." Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia - 20th century

The 20th century lasted from 1901 to 2000 in the Gregorian calendar. Common usage sometimes regards it as lasting from 1900 to 1999. The 20th century is also sometimes known as the nineteen hundreds (1900s). However, a number of arguments have been used to justify the common usage. One advanced by Stephen Jay Gould is that the first decade had only nine years, thus contradicting the definition of decade equaled 10 years. Another argument is that the astronomical year numbering system for years does have a year zero, the ...

Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia - Behavioral ecology

Behavioral ecology is the study of the ecological and evolutionary basis for animal behavior, and the roles of behavior in enabling an animal to adapt to its environment (both intrinsic and extrinsic). Behavioral ecology emerged from ethology after Niko Tinbergen (a seminal figure in the study of animal behavior), outlined the four causes of behavior. These four causes can be grouped into two larger classes (ultimate causes and proximate causes). The two causes that contribute to ultimate causation are phylogenetic contingencie ...

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (IPA: /pjɛʀ tejaʀ də ʃaʀdɛ̃/; May 1, 1881 – April 10, 1955), a Jesuit priest trained as a palaeontologist and a philosopher, was present at the discovery of Peking Man. Teilhard de Chardin popularized such ideas as the Omega Point and the Noosphere. In setting forth this sweeping account of the unfolding of the material cosmos, he abandoned the literal interpretation of the two different accounts of creation in the Book of Genesis, in fav ...

Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia II - Modern evolutionary synthesis - History

George John Romanes coined the term neo-Darwinism to refer to the theory of evolution preferred by Alfred Russel Wallace et al. Wallace rejected the Lamarckian idea of inheritance of acquired characteristics, something that Darwin, Huxley et al wouldn't rule out. The mechanism of inheritance wasn't discovered in Darwin or Wallace's time, however, so the debate was never settled. Mendelian genetics was rediscovered in 1900. However, there were differences of opinion as to what was the variation that natural selecti ...

Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia II - Answers in Genesis - Criticism

No Answers in Genesis is a site maintained by members of Australian Skeptics led by retired civil servant John Stear for the purpose of rebutting AiG. Some creationists use a statement from the scientist and atheist Richard Dawkins that evolution makes it possible to be an intellectually fulfilled atheist to argue that Stear's atheism adds a bias to his arguments. He has responded (to similar arguments): The fact is that what I believe personally has no bearing on my management of a web site that is dedicated to, and is obv ...

Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia II - Macroevolution - History of macroevolution

The debate over the relationship between macroevolution and microevolution has been going on since the 1860s, when evolution first became a widely accepted idea following the publication of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species. The first theory of macroevolution, Lamarckism, developed by biologist Jean-Baptiste Pierre Antoine de Monet, Chevalier de Lamarck, asserted that individuals develop traits they use and lose traits they do not use, and that individuals pass the acquired traits onto their offspring. Lamarck asserted tha ...

Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia II - Kansas evolution hearings - Overview

In the November 8, 2005 the Kansas Board of Education approved the following changes to its science standards: Add to the mission statement a goal that science education should seek to "inform." Provide a definition of science that does not preclude supernatural explanations such as intelligent design.[1] Allow intelligent design to be presented as an alternative explanation to evolution as presented in mainstream biology textbooks, with ...

Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia II - Evolutionary biology - History

Evolutionary biology as an academic discipline in its own right emerged as a result of the modern evolutionary synthesis in the 1930s and 1940s. It was not until the 1970s and 1980s, however, that a significant number of universities had departments that specifically included the term evolutionary biology in their titles. In the United States, as a result of the rapid growth of molecular and cell biology, many universities have split (or aggregated) their biology departments into molecular and cell biology-style departments and ...

Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia II - Theistic evolution - Spectrum of viewpoints

Evolutionary creationism is a variant of creationism which accepts microevolution and macroevolution while retaining a theistic interpretation of evolution. Theistic evolution is accepted (or at least not rejected) by major Christian churches, including Roman Catholicism; some Judaism denominations; and other religious organizations that lack a literalist stance concerning holy scriptures. With this approach toward evolution, scriptural creation stories are typically interpreted as being allegorical in nature. Many individuals stress the unreliability of Genesis as a scientific text ...

Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia II - Nothing in Biology Makes Sense Except in the Light of Evolution - Overview

Dobzhansky starts with a reductio ad absurdum of the geocentrism of an Arab sheik (who may have been Shaikh Abdulaziz bin Baz, later the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia) who believes the Sun revolves around the Earth because scripture says so. Dobzhansky asserts his own belief that scripture and science do not contradict each other. He criticises creationists for implying that God is deceitful and asserts that this is blasphemous. Dobzhansky then goes on to describe the diversity of life on Earth, and that the diversity of species cannot ...

Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia II - Ecological genetics - History

Although work on natural populations had been done previously, it is acknowledged that the field was founded by the Briton E.B. Ford in the early 20th century. Ecological Genetics is the title of his 1964 'magnum opus' on the subject. Other notable ecological geneticists would include Theodosius Dobzhansky's work on Hawaiian fruit flies. Ford's genetics school at Oxford in the 1960s is famous for studies, including ...

Theodosius Dobzhansky: Encyclopedia II - Darwin on Trial - Overview

Johnson, begins by recounting Edwards v. Aguillard, a US Supreme Court case regarding a Louisiana law requiring the teaching of "creation-science"; the law was ruled an "establishment of religion". While not an advocate of creation-science, Johnson states that an associated amicus curiae brief by the National Academy of Sciences improperly "defined 'science' in such a way that [it was impossible to] dispute the claims of the scientific establishment" and a rule it proposed against "negative argumentation [eliminated] the possibility t ...
