The Von Bondies: Encyclopedia II - The Von Bondies - Early Days

Around the turn of the century, two ex-college roomates, Jason Stollsteimer and Marcie Bolen, attended a concert by Japanese rock & roll giants Guitar Wolf. At the time, Stollsteimer was working a dead-end job as a bowling alley bartender. The performance spurred the pair to create their own band, and Stollsteimer replaced his drinking habits with devotion to guitar playing. After recruiting Lauren Wilcox (who was later replaced by Carrie Smith) on bass and Detroit-scene veteran Don Blum on percussion, the band was named the Babykillers. This was thankfully changed to the Von Bondies wh ...

The Von Bondies: Encyclopedia II - NME - History

NME - 1950s. The papers first issue was published on the 7th March 1952 after the Musical Express was bought by London music promoter Maurice Kinn and relaunched as the New Musical Express (commonly shortened to NME). It was initially published in a non-glossy, tabloid format on standard newsprint. Later the same year, taking its cue from the US Billboard Magazine, it created the first UK Singles Chart. The Von Bondies: Encyclopedia II - Indie rock - Indie: status or genre?

In the UK, indie music charts have been compiled since at least the 1980s. These charts initially featured independent bands that emerged from punk and post-punk, as well as indie pop artists such as Aztec Camera and Orange Juice, the C86 jangle-pop movement and the twee pop of Sarah Records artists. The bands were distinguished by having their records released by small labels, independently of the major record companies. The 1980s indie scene directly influenced 1990s Britpop artists such as Blur and Suede (though many of these were technically not wholl ...

The Von Bondies: Encyclopedia II - Lollapalooza - Overview

Farrell conceived of the Lollapalooza festival in 1990 as a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction. The name Lollapalooza means "something outstanding or unusual"; Farrell heard the word in a Three Stooges short film and liked the sound. Unlike previous music festivals such as Woodstock or the US Festival, which were one-time events held in one venue, Lollapalooza was a touring show -- a modern-day chautauqua -- that travelled across the United States and Canada. Instead of drawing music enthusiasts from around the country to one spot, Lo ...

The Von Bondies: Encyclopedia II - Garage rock - Revivals

The first garage rock revival occurred in the mid-1970s, when bands such as The Dictators and The Unclaimed emulated the look and sound of sixties garage rock. Several of the "punk" bands that emerged in the later seventies, notably The Ramones, were heavily influenced by the sixties garage acts. In the 1980s, another garage rock revival saw a number of bands earnestly trying to replicate the sound, style, and look of the '60s garage bands; this trend coincided with a similar surf rock revival, and both styles fed in into the alternat ...

The Von Bondies: Encyclopedia II - Indie rock - Indie Rock in North America

"Scenes" are localized music-oriented communities that exist in many cities, especially in the U.S. and Canada. These have existed for decades now, in one way or another, but it is now commonplace for a city or town to have a punk scene, a metal scene, or many other scenes based on other forms of art. Indie music scenes became important in the early 1980s, when the rest of the country caught up with punk rock music from New York and London. Scenes are important in keeping indie and punk rock fresh and inventive, because it allows people from ...

The Von Bondies: Encyclopedia II - Detroit Michigan - Law and government

The city is run by the mayor and under a charter adopted on July 1, 1974. The same charter renamed the common council to the city council whose members are full-time legislators elected at-large on a nonpartisan ballot. Detroit has a "strong mayoral" system, with the mayors not requiring council approval of departmental appointments. Although the council approves budgets, by court interpretation the mayor is not obligated to adhere to any earmarking of funds for projects and departments. City ordinances must be approved by the council as wel ...
