 | | | The Velvet Underground: Encyclopedia II - The Velvet Underground - Reunion
In 1990, Reed and Cale released Songs for Drella, dedicated to the recently deceased Andy Warhol. ("Drella" was a nickname Warhol had adopted, a combination of "Dracula" and "Cinderella".) Though Morrison and Tucker had each worked with Reed and Cale since the V.U. broke up, Songs for Drella was the first time the mercurial pair had worked together in decades, and rumors of a reunion began to circulate.
There was a brief reunion of the original lineup in 1993, resulting in a European tour — both headlining and opening a few concerts for U2 — and a live album, Live MCMXCIII. Cale ...

 | | | The Velvet Underground: Encyclopedia II - John Cale - The Velvet UndergroundIn 1965, he joined Lou Reed (who is a week older than Cale) in the newly-formed Velvet Underground, but left in 1968, due in part to creative disagreements with Reed.
Cale appears on the Velvet Underground's first two albums, The Velvet Underground and Nico and White Light/White Heat. He sings on a few songs, plays bass guitar, piano and organ and co-wrote some of the material, but perhaps his most distinctive contributions are the electrically amplified viola drones which a ...

 | | | The Velvet Underground: Encyclopedia II - The Velvet Underground - Early careerThe foundations for what would become The Velvet Underground were laid in late 1964. Lou Reed had performed with a few short-lived garage bands and had worked as a songwriter for Pickwick Records, a job Reed described as "a poor man's Carole King". Reed met John Cale, a Welshman who had moved to the United States to study classical music. Cale had worked with John Cage and La Monte Young, but was also interested in rock music. (Young's use of extended drones would be a profound influence on the early Velvet's sound). The pair rehearsed and performed together, and their partnership and shared interests steered the early ...

 | | | The Velvet Underground: Encyclopedia II - The Velvet Underground and Nico - About the albumAs well as the band (which at this time consisted of Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison and Maureen "Moe" Tucker), the record features Nico on four tracks ("Sunday Morning", "Femme Fatale", "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "I'll Be Your Mirror"). She was added on the instigation of their mentor, Andy Warhol.
The bulk of the songs that would become The Velvet Underground and Nico were recorded in a two-day stint in a decrepit New York City recording studio, Scepter Studios, in April of 1966. The recording session was financed by ...

 | | | The Velvet Underground: Encyclopedia II - The Velvet Underground album - About the albumThe Velvet Underground was the first for MGM Records, the band's first two albums having been issued by MGM subsidiary and legendary jazz label, Verve Records. Apart from the cover and back photographs taken by Factory associate Billy Name, the previously strong Andy Warhol influence is gone.
The record was produced by the band themselves, and issued simultaneously in two mixes: one done by sound engineer Val Valentin, and one by Lou Reed, dubbed the 'closet mix' by guitarist Sterling Morrison. He thought it sounded flat, as if ...

 | | | The Velvet Underground: Encyclopedia II - John Cale - Later careerAfter leaving the Velvet Underground, Cale produced a number of albums, including Nico's The Marble Index, and began to make solo records. His first, Vintage Violence came in 1970, following which he collaborated with yet another classical musician, Terry Riley, on the mainly instrumental Church of Anthrax. His solo record of 1973, Paris 1919, is regarded by many as a classic. It is made up of elegantly crafted and tastefully arranged songs with obscure and complex lyrics, appa ...

 | | | The Velvet Underground: Encyclopedia II - Gold Velvet Underground album - About the albumThe album is a regular best-of compilation, drawing from the band's three albums, two outtake compilation and live album on Polydor sub-labels (Verve, M·G·M and Mercury). It is notable for including four live tracks (previously available on 1969: The Velvet Underground Live), which most other compilations shied away from, but is unbalanced by the absence of Loaded tracks.
Gold does include two Nico solo tracks, co-written and played by Velvet Underground band members Lou Reed, John Cale and/or Sterling Morrison, ...
