The Truth: Encyclopedia II - Interesting Times - Synopsis

This novel marks Rincewind's reappearance on the Discworld after the events of Faust Eric. The Patrician of Ankh-Morpork is sent a letter from the Agatean Empire on the Counterweight Continent (by albatross mail) commanding him to "send us the Great Wizzard". The wizards of Unseen University, after some discussion, eventually realise the spelling of Wizzard can refer to only one man - Rincewind. After using Hex to assist in performing a spell to summon Rincewind to UU, Archchancellor Ridcully convinces him to go to the A ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - The Lizard King - Jim Morrison The Lizard King

Morrison was deeply interested in metaphysics, both modern and classical. He was a proponent of both Jungian and Nietzschean ideas, and was also fascinated by Native American mysticism. Performances by the Doors often used words, actions, images and patterns intended to provoke a subconscious reaction in the audience. On stage, Morrison would often imitate a shaman by screeching, making animal sounds, suddenly falling over, and then either getting up laughing or playing dead ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - MacGuffin - Other examples

MacGuffin - Film. One particularly famous early movie example of a MacGuffin is the titular statuette in The Maltese Falcon. Roger Ebert defines the term in his commentary track for Casablanca, where he points out that the "letters of transit"[2] in the film are a MacGuffin. Roman Polanski's 1974 neo-noir classic, Chinatown uses a MacGuffin in the form of the fake Mrs. Mulwray who drives the plot but ultimately bears little influence in the grand scheme of things. A ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - Men at Arms - Synopsis

Edward d'Eath, scion of a down-and-out noble family, is determined to track down the lost heir to Ankh-Morpork's throne, and place him as leader, no matter how many people he has to take out to do it. Meanwhile, Captain Samuel Vimes, commander of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, is confronted by new problems. About to be married to Sybil Ramkin, richest woman in Ankh-Morpork, he's got to deal with the Watch's new recruits first: a dwarf and a troll, representatives of two races involved in a grudge so old it doesn't need excuses anymore, ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - Crystal Ball - Album Controversy

The album is a source of much controversy and a sore spot with many fans. Initially promised to be released in early 1997, later stated that he wouldn't even press the album until he received a minimum of 50,000 pre-orders. Even after pre-orders were received, it was nearly a year before fans started receiving their copies. The shipping process was poorly managed and some fans received their orders months later, if at all. Fans were also promised a transparent package in the shape of an actual crystal ball; instead, when the album finally s ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - Minor Discworld characters - Kaos, aka Ronnie Soak

An anthropomorphic personification. Fifth horseman of the apocalypse who left before they became famous. Rides a chariot. Wields a sword so cold that it has negative heat – it radiates cold. In Thief of Time, changes from the ancient Kaos of old to a slicker, altogether more modern and mathematical Chaos. When not heralding the destruction of all that is (or saving it from the Auditors), he runs a very fine dairy. ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - Minor Discworld characters - Mr. Salzella

The Director of Music at the Ankh-Morpork Opera House in Maskerade, most notable for an absolute hatred of opera (although he was really as "infected" with operatic romanticism as everyone else in the place). He was embezzling money and murdering people who found out, blaming the murders on the Opera Ghost. He was finally killed in an extremely operatic battle with the Ghost. While the character is seemingly based loosely on Ambrose D'Arcy from the 1962 Hammer Horror version of The Phantom of the Opera, his name is based ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - Samuel Vimes - The Watch

All that changed when Carrot Ironfoundersson came to the city. This man (raised by dwarfs) joined the Watch and set out to help the city. Around the same time a dragon assaulted the city (not a swamp dragon, a real, big dragon) and the Watch was instrumental in its defeat. Later on, the Night Watch under Vimes took on extra staff in the form of a werewolf, a dwarf and a troll. They were instrumental in foiling an attempt on the Patrician's life, and were rewarded. The Watch was rapidly revi ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - Samuel Vimes - Vimes as Duke of Ankh

Vimes's involvement in preventing a pointless war with Klatch in the novel Jingo led to his being once more "rewarded" with an unwanted title, in this case "Duke of Ankh". He now finds himself in the awkward position of continuing to despise the ruling classes of the city, while actually being a member of them. In the course of his mission to Überwald as Ambassador, he was disgusted to learn that he was also entitled to be addressed as "His Excellency". While this may have impressed th ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - Samuel Vimes - Background

Sam Vimes was born in Cockbill Street, in the Rimwards part of the Shades, the poorest area of Ankh-Morpork. It was so poor that there was little crime, though Sam was part of a street gang (The Cockbill Street Roaring Lads) with Lupine Wonse (later secretary to Lord Vetinari). At school he was once blackboard monitor for a whole term (An honour his mother paid for, unknown to him at the time). Sam's grandfather's name was Gwilliam and his father's name was Thomas. His mother told the young Sam that Thomas was run down by a cart, but this was apparently untrue. Whatever happened t ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - The X-Files - Season 8 and beyond

Duchovny returned for brief stints in seasons eight and nine. In season eight, Mulder reappeared as a corpse, was buried for several months (of the story's time frame), and then later revived. With both Duchovny and Anderson's involvement reduced, the show introduced two new X-Files agents, John Doggett and Monica Reyes (played by Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish). It was Chris Carter's belief that the series could continue for another ten years with new leads. This was not to be the case, however, as Doggett and Reyes did no ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - The X-Files - Duchovny leaves

Hoping to capitalize on his small-screen popularity and make more movies, David Duchovny ceased to be a regular on The X-Files after the seventh season. His departure made for some interesting plot twists. The Season 7 finale found Mulder abducted by aliens and Scully pregnant. At the very end of the Season 8 finale, Scully asks Mulder how this could have happened, and he responds by referring to "the truth we both know" and proceeds to kiss her. It is unclear as to whether she is referring to her supposed infertility or the possibili ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - Minor Discworld characters - Vorbis

In Small Gods, deacon Vorbis is the head of the Quisition, and later (for a very brief time) the Cenobiarch of Omnia. He's a frightening character, bald by design, with dark eyes. Vorbis' character combines a strange mix of apparently religious mania with a fervent desire to spread the Word/Empire across all the Disc. The character of Vorbis is one that may interest any reader interested in questions regarding institutional religion, heresy, and the direct communication between God and Man. Vorbis has a reputation for being a m ...

The Truth: Encyclopedia II - Minor Discworld characters - General Tacticus

General Tacticus was a soldier of the Ankh-Morpork Empire proclaimed to be the greatest general of all time. In fact, on the Discworld the word 'tactics' was derived from his name. Though he is dead at the time of the events contained in the series, his legacy lives on. He is an amalgamation of various historic characters, including General George Patton, Marcus Aurelius and Julius Caesar, which latter can be seen in the title of his autobiography, VENI VIDI VICI: A Soldier's Life.
