The Mother: Encyclopedia - Mother
A mother is the biological or social female parent of a child or offspring, while the male parent is the father. The maternal bond describes the feelings the mother has for her (or another's) child. In the case of a mammal such as a human, the mother gestates her child (called first an embryo, then a fetus) in the womb from conception until the fetus is sufficiently well-developed to be born. The mother then goes into labour and gives birth. Once the child is born, the mot ...

The Mother: Encyclopedia II - The Mother - The Mother of the Ashram

On the 24 November 1926 (Siddhi Day) Sri Aurobindo reported himself to have had an important experience in which he realised the Overmental plane and brought down to Earth, in his words, the Overmental Krishna (Das 1978 p.233). This was also the official founding of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. At the time there no more than 24 disciples in the Ashram (ibid pp.233-4). In December of that year, Sri Aurobindo decided to withdraw from public view. It was at this point that he identified Mirra with the Divine Mother, and instru ...

The Mother: Paris to Pondicherry: Journey of Discovery

''All life is yoga,'' said Sri Aurobindo, referring to the work done not for the satisfaction of one's desires or ego but as an offering to the Divine, which is actually a powerful means of yoga.

This is how the Mother explains the profundity of Sri Aurobindo's vision: ''There is an ascending evolution in nature which goes from the stone to the plant, from the plant to the animal, from the animal to man. Because man is, for the moment, the last rung at the summit of the ascending evolution, he considers himself as the final stage in this ascension and believes there can be nothing on earth superior to him. In that he is mistaken…."

The Mother: Encyclopedia - Great Mother

The Great Mother manifests itself in myth as a host of archaic images. Commonly conceived of as a nature goddess, the recurrent theme of nature and motherly care go hand in hand. As the prominent feature of many early Indo-European societies, the mother archetype manifests itself in a host of deities and symbolism (independent and therein). The most defined occurrence of a mother goddess is with the Celts, and their predecessors. The goddess Danu was an archaic character and was the namesake for the Celtic pantheon of gods, the ...

The Mother: Encyclopedia - Mother goddess

A mother goddess is a goddess portrayed as the Earth Mother who serves as a general fertility deity, the bountiful embodiment of the earth. From the elegant snake-offering goddess figures of Knossos to the rock-cut images of Cybele, to Dione ("the Goddess") who was invoked at Dodona, along with Zeus, until late Classical times, it is sometimes too facile to class all archaic female goddesses as manifestations of the mother goddess. Archaeologists tend to avoid such theories in interpreting sites and material remains and sometim ...
