Mind: Encyclopedia - Mind
The mind is the term most commonly used to describe the higher functions of the human brain, particularly those of which humans are subjectively conscious, such as personality, thought, reason, memory, intelligence and emotion. Although other species of animals share some of these mental capacities, the term is usually used only in relation to humans. It is also used in relation to postulated supernatural beings to which human-like qualities are ascribed, as in the expression "the mind of God." Mind - Theories of the min ...

Mind: Mind vs. Intellect

The mind is bigger than the brain. When people say "my mind," they are most likely referring to their intellect. The intellect is a process of the brain and, much of the time, along with our emotions, acts as part of our ego's defense system. The intended function of the intellect was to assess our immediate environment and communicate the information to the body so it could respond in whatever manner was appropriate to protect our physical being.

Mind: Encyclopedia - Animal mind

The question of animal minds asks whether it is necessary, or possible, to describe a non-human animal as having a mind. Discussion of this subject is frequently confused by the fact that some schools of philosophy and psychology would question whether we need to, or should, ascribe mind to any human being other than ourselves (or even to ourselves). Such an approach (for example radical behaviorism) would nat ...

Mind: Encyclopedia - Absent-minded professor

The absent-minded professor is a stock character of popular fiction usually portrayed as an academic with important information, but whose focus on their learning leads them to ignore their surroundings. An example of an absent-minded professor is Professor Plum from Clue, or Professor Calculus from Tintin. The earliest example of this character type is possibly the story associated with the philosopher Thales, who allegedly walked at night with his eyes focused on the heavens, and as a result, fell down a well. < ...

Mind: Encyclopedia - Where Is My Mind?

"Where Is My Mind?" is a song by the Pixies. It originates from their 1988 album, Surfer Rosa. His girlfriend at the time overheard the initial pieces of the song and told him "That's a good one, you should finish it". Indeed, it went on to be one of the Pixies' most popular and beloved songs. Mind: Encyclopedia - Unconscious mind

The notion of an unconscious or subconscious has been defined in a variety of ways over time, but in psychology it is considered to be the deepest level of consciousness, a part of which we are not directly aware, but still contains elements that affect conscious behavior. As defined by Sigmund Freud, the psyche is composed of different levels of consciousness, often defined in three parts as the waking consciousness, preconsciousness (which can be recalled with effort), and beneath both of these, the unconscious (which is beyo ...

Mind: Encyclopedia - Mind control

Mind control is a general term for a number of controversial theories proposing that an individual's thinking, behavior, emotions or decisions can, to a greater or lesser extent, be manipulated at will by outside sources. People who believe they are subject to mind-control are usually psychotic. Suitable doses of anti-psychotic drugs remove the delusion or make it less obtrusive. The principal feasibility of such control and the methods by which it might be attained (either direct or more subtle) are both subject to hot ...

Mind: Encyclopedia II - Mind - Nature of the mind

Both philosophers and psychologists remain divided about the nature of the mind. Some take what is known as the substantial view, and argue that the mind is a single entity, perhaps having its base in the brain but distinct from it and having an autonomous existence. This view ultimately derives from Plato, and was absorbed from him into Christian thought. In its most extreme form, the substantial view merges with the theological view that the mind is an entity wholly separate from the body, in fact a manifestation of the soul, which will survive the b ...

Mind: Encyclopedia II - Mind - History of the philosophy of the mind

A leading exponent of the substantial view was George Berkeley, an 18th century Anglican bishop and philosopher. Berkeley argued that there is no such thing as matter and what humans see as the material world is nothing but an idea in God's mind, and that therefore the human mind is purely a manifestation of the soul or spirit or similar. This type of belief is also common in certain types of spiritual non-dualistic belief, but outside this field few philosophers take an extreme view today. However, the view that the human mind is of a nature or essence somehow different from, and higher than, ...
