The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Vic and Bob - Sitcom and drama

In 1992, Reeves and Mortimer made their first brief detour into sitcoms by writing and recording a pilot episode of The Weekenders, a one-off pilot for Channel 4's Bunch Of Five season. Human League vocalist Phil Oakey, and the future Fast Show trio of Paul Whitehouse, John Thomson and Simon Day, all starred. The Weekenders is also notable as the one programme where Vic is intentiona ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Vic and Bob - Quiz shows

In 1993 a pilot episode of Shooting Stars was screened on BBC 2 as part of the At Home with Vic and Bob evening of programming. It began running as a regular series in 1995. Maintaining their bizarre and irreverent style, the pair played host to two teams of celebrity guests (captained each week by Mark Lamarr and Ulrika Jonsson, and later Will Self) answering what can be loosely described as general knowledge questions. They were also accompanied by regular appearances from Lucas as drumming baby George Dawes (Lucas is now kno ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Vic and Bob - Sketch shows

In 1993 Reeves and Mortimer transferred from Channel 4 to BBC 2, writing and appearing in The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, indicating the rise in Mortimer's standing from sidekick to Reeves' equal. These programmes were more slick and scripted than their Channel 4 predecessors. Two series of six episodes each were made, and most of the original Big Night Out format was abandoned, although various actors returned in new roles, including Caroline Aherne and Charlie Higson (The Fast Show) and Matt Lucas (Little B ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Harry Hill - Standup

Harry Hill has established a tight and successful standup structure in which he employs the comedic process of 'reincorporation' to a uniquely obsessive degree. He sets up a number of running themes and slips in and out of each thread without warning, in this regard it is akin to juggling a number of objects and delighting the audience with the skill. Harry is one of the comedians set on his way by Malcolm Hardee. His routines are usually smut-free and he seldom employs harsh language. There is often a sexual undertone to his work but his humour appears grounded in petty ...

Izzard states that he does not write any of his material down [1]. Running characters and references in his comedy include: An impression of James Mason, often representing a hapless, dithering God or authority figure An impression of Sean Connery, whose character - which has ranged from Noah to Henry VIII - usually interacts with the Mason character The name 'Jeff' (for instance as in "Jeff Jeffty-Jeff. The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Chris Morris satirist - Other information

A significant feature of Morris's output is his music. He often co-writes and performs incidental music for his television shows, notably with Jam and the 'extended remix' version, Jaaaaam. His parodies of musical performances (such as the Pulp spoof mentioned above and an Eminem parody in the paedophilia special) are very accurate. This is due not only to his musical ability, but also to his understanding o ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Chris Morris satirist - A controversial figure

Morris has also covered other controversial subjects. He once falsely suggested on the radio that Jimmy Savile and Conservative MP Michael Heseltine had died; had a show faded mid-broadcast when he played a scurrilous cut-up of the Archbishop of Canterbury's funeral oration for Diana, Princess of Wales, although Radio 1 had previously cleared this for broadcast and this was an error on their part as they mistook it for another censored sketch on a similar theme; and performed a song in the style of Pulp lead singer Jarvis Cocker about notori ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Chris Morris satirist - Move into television

In 1994 a television series based on On the Hour was broadcast under the name The Day Today. The Day Today made a star of Morris, and also helped to launch the careers of Patrick Marber and Steve Coogan. 1994 proved to be Morris's most critically successful year, as he presented a BBC Radio 1 series similar in content to, but sharper than, the Greater London Radio broadcasts, and teamed up with comedy legend Peter Cook, as Sir Arthur Streeb-Greebling, in a series of improvised conversations for Radio Three, entitled W ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Eric Morecambe - Early life and childhood career

Eric was born to parents George and Sadie Bartholomew. His mother, Sadie, was determined to see her only child make a success of his life, and took work as a waitress to raise funds for his dancing lessons. Eric did not enjoy these lessons at the time, although they were to come in handy during his later life. During this period, Eric Bartholomew (the John having been dropped more or less from birth) won numerous talent contests, most notably in Hoylake in 1939, the prize for which was an audition with Jack Hylton. Also present was an ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Charlie Chaplin - Auteur

Chaplin built his own Hollywood studio in 1918, and assumed an unparalleled degree of artistic and financial independence over his productions. Using this independence, over the next 35 years he created a remarkable, timeless body of work that remains entertaining and influential. These include comedy shorts including: A Dog's Life (1918), and Pay Day (1922); longer films, such as: Shoulder Arms (1918) and The Pilgrim (1923); and his great silent feature length films, among them: The Kid (1921), A Woman ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Charlie Chaplin - Marriages

Charlie Chaplin - Mildred Harris. Chaplin's professional successes were repeatedly overshadowed by his private life, particularly with regard to his politics and his pattern of relationship with young women. On October 23, 1918, the 28 year old Chaplin married the 16-year-old Mildred Harris. They had one child, Norman Spencer Chaplin, who died in infancy; they divorced in 1920. ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Charlie Chaplin - Academy Award

Chaplin won the honorary Oscar twice. When the first Oscars were awarded on May 16, 1929, the voting audit procedures that now exist had not yet been put into place, and the categories were still very fluid. Chaplin had originally been nominated for both Best Actor and Best Comedy Directing for his movie The Circus, but his name was withdrawn and the Academy decided to give him a special award "for versatility and genius in acting, writing, directing and producing The Circus" instead. The other film to receive a sp ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Charlie Chaplin - McCarthyism

Although Chaplin had his major successes in the United States and was a resident from 1914 to 1952, he retained his British nationality. During the era of McCarthyism, Chaplin was accused of "un-American activities" as a suspected communist; and J. Edgar Hoover, who had instructed the FBI to keep extensive files on him, tried to end his United States residency. FBI pressure on Chaplin grew after his 1942 campaign for a second front in the war, and reached a critical level in the late 1940's, when Congressional figures threatened to call him as a witness in hearings. This was never done, probably because of fear of Chaplin's abi ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Charlie Chaplin - United Artists

In 1919 he founded the United Artists film distribution company with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D. W. Griffith, and served on the board of UA until the early 1950's. Although "talkies" became the dominant mode of moviemaking soon after they were introduced in 1927, Chaplin resisted making a talkie all through the 1930s. It is a tribute to Chaplin's versatility that he also has one film credit for choreography for the 1952 film Limelight, and one credit as a singer for the title music of the 1928 film The Circus ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Tony Hancock - International dreams and introspection

Hancock also starred in the 1960 film The Rebel (released as Call Me Genius in the USA) where he plays the role of an office worker-turned-artist who meets international acclaim after moving to Paris, but only as the result of mistaken identity. The film was not well received in the United States; owing to a conflict with a contemporary television series, the film had to be renamed and this inflamed American critics. Hancock was later to dismiss the film as crude, and its failure was a contributory factor in his disastrous brea ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Eric Idle - University Life

Eric Idle attended Pembroke College at the University of Cambridge, where he studied English. At Pembroke College he was invited to join the prestigious Cambridge University Footlights Club by fellow Pembroke College students, the then 1963 President of the Footlights Club, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Footlights Club member Bill Oddie. "I'd never heard of the Footlights when I got there, but we had a tradition of college smoking-concerts, and I sent in some sketches parodying a play that had just been done. Tim Brooke-Taylor and Bill Odd ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Eric Idle - Monty Python

Unlike the other Pythons, who wrote in pairs (Cleese/Chapman and Palin/Jones), Idle wrote alone. His work was often closely associated with long, complex speeches or catchy one-liners. Amongst the many Python sketches written by Idle is the "Nudge Nudge Wink Wink" sketch, the title of which has become a catchphrase. His skills as a singer-songwriter were also put to use in his work with Monty Python, having written the majority of the songs featured in their television series' and films. These include "Eric the Half-a-Bee", "Th ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Eddie Murphy - Comeback and image makeover

On May 2, 1997, Los Angeles police stopped Murphy's car and found a transgendered prostitute named Shalimar (Atisone Seiuli) in the passenger's seat. Buying and selling of sexual services is illegal in California; however, Murphy claimed that he had just been driving through and the prostitute asked him for a ride home. This incident was later lampooned by Tim Meadows on Saturday Night Live. This particular sketch, along with the aforementioned comments from David Spade, reportedly ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Eddie Murphy - Career lulls

In the late 80's and early 90's, Murphy's fame was fading via a series of poor sequels (Another 48 Hrs. and Beverly Hills Cop III), drab comedies (Boomerang and The Distinguished Gentleman), and ego-driven vehicles (Harlem Nights and Vampire in Brooklyn) that the public avoided in droves. His directorial debut, Harlem Nights, was savaged not only by the critics, but also by several of the actors in the film. Richard Pryor had nothing good to say about the film or the star, which stunned Murphy ...

The Comedian's Comedian: Encyclopedia II - Eddie Murphy - Singing career

Murphy was also a singer, and had two hit singles, "Party All the Time" (which was produced by Rick James) and "Put Your Mouth on Me" in the 1980s. The former is better known than the other, and is incorrectly considered Murphy's only hit. Intended as dance music, the song was repetitious and resembled the adolescent-driven bubblegum music of the '60s and '70s. As a result, there was a distinct disconnect between "Party" and fans of Murphy's edgier comedic persona. In 2004, VH-1 and Blender magazine voted "Party" number seven among the "50 Worst Songs of All Time," barely behind such efforts as Vanilla Ice's "Ice, Ice, B ...
