Tension Dictionary: Holistic Health Therapy Dictionary on Alexander technique

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE: F. Matthias Alexander created the method after concluding that bad posture was responsible for his own chronic voice loss.

Practitioners use gentle hands-on guidance, verbal instruction, teach simple, efficient ways of moving as a means of improving balance, posture, coordination and to relieve tension and pain.

Besides increasing the physical and psychological performances, this method of psychomotor rehabilitation brings a durable relief to back pain and to the numerous illness bound related to the posture. Its first objective is to change the stereotyped habits. Its addresses those who suffer from stress and from chronic pain, but also to the pregnant women who feel motor difficulties.

Tension Dictionary: Massage Bodywork Dictionary on BIOSYNC

BIOSYNC

Nerve impingement in cross-linked connective tissue is a major cause of chronic and sports-associated pain. Through trauma (injury), compression, tension, free-radical damage, pollution, and more, cross-linking of connective tissue is formed. These threads of connective tissue adhere to adjacent strands, thereby decreasing range of motion, reducing joint space, impinging nerves, and generally shortening the body.

The BioSync method releases collagen cross-linking by unwinding these locked and hardened strands, thereby restoring the body’s length, flexibility, and function, and allowing regeneration and revitalization of the whole system.

The BioSync method, developed by Mark Lamm, NMT, is a sophisticated system of neuromuscular rehabilitation and re-education and has been successful with a wide range of muscular and trauma-related challenges. It is complementary with existing medical and rehabilitative procedures.

Tension Dictionary: Buddhist - Buddhism Dictionary on Zen

Zen.

A major school of Mahayana Buddhism, with several branches.

One of its most popular techniques is meditation on koans, which leads to the generation of the Great Doubt. According to this method: The master gives the student a koan to think about, resolve, and then report back on to the master. Concentration intensifies as the student first tries to solve the koan intellectually. This initial effort proves impossible, however, for a koan cannot be solved rationally. Indeed, it is a kind of spoof on the human intellect.

Concentration and irrationality -- these two elements constitute the characteristic psychic situation that engulfs the student wrestling with a koan. As this persistent effort to concentrate intellectually becomes unbearable, anxiety sets in. The entirety of one's consciousness and psychic life is now filled with one thought. The exertion of the search is like wrestling with a deadly enemy or trying to make one's way through a ring of flames. Such assaults on the fortress of human reason inevitably give rise to a distrust of all rational perception.

This gnawing doubt (Great Doubt), combined with a futile search for a way out, creates a state of extreme and intense yearning for deliverance. The state may persist for days, weeks or even years; eventually the tension has to break. (Dumoulin, Zen Buddhism, Vol. I, p.253.)

An interesting koan is the koan of Buddha Recitation. Unlike other koans, it works in two ways. First of all, if a cultivator succeeds in his meditation through this koan, he can achieve awakening as with other koans. However, if he does not succeed, and experience shows that many cultivators do not, then the meditation on the Buddha's narne helps him to achieve rebirth in the Pure Land.

This is so provided he believes (as most practitioners in Asia do) in Amitabha and the expedient Pure Land. Thus, the Buddha Recitation koan provides a safety net, and demonstrates the underlying unity of Zen and Pure Land.

Tension Dictionary: Can Dream Predict the Future?

Dream FAQ Dictionary: Can Dream Predict the Future?

Can Dream Predict the Future?

Treat such dreams with caution and good sense. If you dream that your plane is crashing, there is no good reason to cancel your flight: the dream will simply be a reflection of your tension and a (perhaps unconscious) fear of flying. If you dream that that plane is piloted by a red-haired man with only one arm, and you are welcomed on board next day by a red-haired pilot with an empty sleeve, you might do well to be worried! However, most of them are only concidence according to statistics, although you think that the dream are predicting your future.

Practicality should always be underlined when we think of dream interpreatations. It is not a modern, untried theory - it has been used in many cultures throughout world history - though it is only in the present century that a general concensus has been reached about the way in which we should look at our dreams and discover how they can help us.

Tension Dictionary: Ayurveda Ayurvedic Dictionary on ACCUPRESSURE

ACCUPRESSURE:

·      Based on the principle of manipulation of crucial pressure points in the body, accupressure cures difficult and chronic aches and pains - backaches, spondylitis, abdominal cramps, neurological disorders, arthritis etc. These pressure points, over a 1000 of them are actually small nerves about a centimeter in diameter and varying in depth between a quarter of an inch to several inches. - are often embedded in or near a muscle or tendon.

·      Adds life to those limbs that have been partially disabled.

·      Safe and effective, it involves no pin-pricks, no heat fomentations, nor any chemical or electric stimulations. However, it is a very exact art and should be carried out by a trained practitioner, absolutely sure about the pressure points to be tapped and the correct pressure to be applied.

The fundamental difference between these two systems being:

ACUPRESSURE

·      A form of physiotherapy that indulges in massage and stimulation of precise points of the body.

·      To ease all kinds of aches and pains and provide relief from tension, exhaustion and disease.

ACUPUNCTURE

·      A form of surgery where needles are penetrated into specific points of your body.

·      To cure chronic aches and pain.

Tension Dictionary: Holistic Health Therapy Dictionary on Deep tissue bodywork

DEEP TISSUE BODYWORK: general term for a range of therapies that seek to improve the function of the bodyÕs connective tissues and/or muscles. Among the conditions treated are whiplash, low back and neck pain, and degenerative diseases, such as multiple sclerosis.

Deep Tissue Massage is a technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibre's of the muscles, tendons and fascia.

Deep Tissue Massage helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue.Deep tissue massage usually focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage, but if it's done right the client should feel better than ever within a day or two.The technique is often used in combination with other massage procedures such as those used in Remedial and Sports Massage.

Tension Dictionary: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Vitality

Vitality The jiva or life-force which manifests through the different principles of the human septenary being, as well as through the multiform hierarchies of nature. It animates the cosmic entity in which we live as vital monadic units and in man manifests as the pranas: "there is a regular circulation of the vital fluid throughout our [solar] system, of which the Sun is the heart -- the same as the circulation of the blood in the human body . . ." (SD 1:541).

The lowest principle of cosmic jiva is diffused through all nature and, among its innumerable activities on all the cosmic planes, on our plane produces all living beings and entities -- man, beast, plant, mineral, and the three kingdoms of the elemental world. "The animal tissues only absorb it according to their more or less morbid or healthy state," matter being the necessary vehicle for its manifestation on this plane (SD 1:537).

On cosmic planes of consciousness, the corresponding aspects of jiva are the vehicles of cosmic thought or ideation which manifest more or less consciously in entities, and automatically as the laws of nature. Likewise, in the human being the psychoelectric field of life-currents, vital fluids, or pranas provides the vehicles or avenues for transmitting his thought, feeling, emotion, and instincts. The tension of this life principle -- in one sense the liquor vitae of Paracelsus -- may be too high or too low, owing to the nervous changes in the matter it invests. Thus, an equilibrium of the vital currents of the body means a state of health, as disturbed or disordered conditions make for disease.

Vitality is not created by the nutrition and functional activities which afford conditions for its play in the body. Too much or too little of the lifestream may produce fatal convulsions or collapse, it being a neutral force with a potential action for both life and death -- for death is but a manifestation of life, and can as easily supervene from a vital excess which tears the body to pieces in time, as through a pranic defect therein. When its cohesive role is neutralized after death, it begins its dispersive "work on the atoms chemically" (SD 1:538).

The source of jiva manifesting as the human pranas is in the divine monad or atman, a reflection of the same fact on the cosmic scale where cosmic jiva originates in Brahman or paramatman.

Tension Dictionary: New Age Spirituality Dictionary on Reflexology

Reflexology

A therapy that heals the body through massaging certain parts of the foot or hand that allegedly correspond to the major organs of the body. Tension Dictionary: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Menstruation

Menstruation

It is a common dream for women and its interpretation is mostly positive. Dreaming about having your menses can be symbolic of releasing tension and worry. Women are often concerned about their reproductive system. (i.e. pregnancy, sexual relationships or their body's "time clock.") Parallel to the menstrual cycle there is a monthly emotional cycle that most women are aware of and experience. During the time of menstruation there is a release of anxiety and an attainment of emotional balance. As a dream symbol it suggests that some difficult times may be over for you and that you can relax. On occasion this dream suggests a loss of energy and disappointment.

Tension Dictionary: Alternative Health Dictionary on Crystal healing

crystal healing (crystal therapeutics, crystal therapy, crystal work): Multiform use of crystals (especially quartz crystals) and gemstones to treat such conditions as blindness, bursitis, cancer, depression, forgetfulness, tension headaches, hemorrhages, indigestion, insomnia, Parkinson's disease, rheumatism, and thrombosis.

Its principle is that crystals draw light and color into the body's aura and thus raise its frequency and allow the emergence of lower frequency energies, which are healthful. Crystal healing sometimes is adjunctive to, or a form of: acupressure, aura balancing, chakra healing, color therapy, pendular diagnosis, prayer, and self-healing.

Tension Dictionary: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Rat

Rat:

1. Dreaming of a black or brown rat is a sign of illness or treachery ahead. In European tradition, rats are associated with theft of foodstuffs and the spread of disease, and therefore seeing brown or black rats running free is a warning to see your doctor and to be careful whom you trust.

2. Seeing brown or black rats in cages, however, is a sign that small irritations in your life will be dealt with. Catching a rat in a trap indicates freedom from worry and a release of tension.

3. White rats, on the other hand, are a sign of protection from beneficent forces or entities around you.

Tension Dictionary: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Earthquakes

Earthquakes Physical phenomena such as earthquakes are generally the end-products of a chain of causation operating not only on the physical plane but also on other cosmic planes.

A study of the geology of the earth's crust as regards the lie of the rocks, the position of faults, the presence of volcanic activities, etc., may indicate the places most likely to be affected, and the relation between earthquakes and the positions of the heavenly bodies is now receiving some consideration from scientists; but they still do not recognize any connection between the cause of earthquakes and events on the mental plane of the earth.

"But when they understand that there is no such thing as accident in the universe, that every event which appears to us as accident, is the effect of a force on the mental plane, then they will be able to understand why the superstitious Hindus look upon earthquakes as the effect of accumulated sins committed by men." (Damodar)

The more subtle forms of force-matter or astral light form the links between the physical earth and the mental state of the living beings upon it; and rapid and more or less violent physical cataclysms may be regarded as the final effects of a sudden release of tension in those higher realms. That unusual psychic conditions perceptible to animals and even to humans precede earthquakes many hours before a shock, and long before the seismographs show the smallest tremor, is well-authenticated.

"It is absolutely false, and but an additional demonstration of the great conceit of our age, to assert (as men of science do) that all the great geological changes and terrible convulsions have been produced by ordinary and known physical forces. For these forces were but the tools and final means for the accomplishment of certain purposes, acting periodically, and apparently mechanically, through an inward impulse mixed up with, but beyond their material nature. There is a purpose in every important act of Nature, whose acts are all cyclic and periodical. But spiritual Forces having been usually confused with the purely physical, the former are denied by, and therefore have to remain unknown to Science, because left unexamined" (SD 1:640).

Tension Dictionary: Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Flying

Flying : Dream Interpretation Dictionary - Flying

FLYING DREAM

You first start dreaming of flying when you are 3 to 5 years old. It is a very common dream, though less prevalent in adults. More than one third of the dreaming population has dreamed of flying one time or the other.

  • Flying dreams are known to have a positive relationship with relief from tension and nightmares.
  • Lucid dreamers tend to have twice as much of flying dreams.
  • An intense emotional condition can also trigger off a flying dream
  • The dreams are not exclusive to the post flying machines era. They have occurred in ancient times too, as records in dream books of Babylonian and Egyptian civilizations reveal.
  • People with an imaginative personality and creative thinkers have more flying dreams
  • Those who fly planes have these dreams, though they rather fly like Superman in their dreams, not in aeroplanes.

What triggers off a flying dream? The reasons offered for these dreams are

  • Psychological - the dreamer has had an intense emotional experience
  • Physiological Ð There is a change in the breathing pattern of the dreamer
  • Physical -There is an actual physical movement of the bed.
  • Precognitive Ð In preparation of a flying trip
  • Consciousness Ð Awareness of movement around you

At an emotional level, a flying dream maybe your defence mechanism to ward of obstacles or transcend over them. But where is your flight headed? Are you seeking something in your flight or is it one of pure joy of the experience?

You will have to identify which particular meaning is the most relevant interpretation.

Tension Dictionary: Massage Bodywork Dictionary on SHEN THERAPY

SHEN THERAPY

SHEN is the acronym for Specific Human Energy Nexus and was developed by American scientist Richard Pavek. A scientifically researched form of energy healing, SHEN aims to release emotions trapped in the body, leading to freedom from pain and tension.

SHEN teaches that most emotions are held in the torso, at four main sites: the heart, the solar plexus, the kath (below the navel), and the root (the perineum). The practitioner places hands in paired positions on the fully-clothed client who’s lying on the table.

The practitioner ascertains the locations of somatically held emotions and determines an appropriate physio-emotional release plan. A naturally occurring energy flows from the practitioner’s hands through the emotional centers of the client’s body in a precise way to discharge debilitating emotions.

Tension Dictionary: Alternative Health Dictionary on Radix

Radix (Neo-Reichian Therapy, Radix neo-Reichian program of personal growth, Radixwork): Mode of body-centered psychotherapy developed by author and psychologist Charles (Chuck) R. Kelley, Ph.D., and his wife, Erica, in the 1960s and early 1970s. Radix borrows from Reichian Therapy the concepts of life energy and muscular armor. According to its theory, muscle tension is the mechanism of volition and an access to one's life force. In Radix terminology, radix means life force or life energy.

Tension Dictionary: Health and Healing Dictionary on Acupressure

Acupressure

Based on the principles of acupuncture, this ancient Chinese technique involves the use of finger pressure (rather than needles) on specific points along the body to treat ailments such as tension and stress, aches and pains, or arthritis. The system is also used for general preventive health care.

Tension Dictionary: Alternative Medicine Dictionary on Bioenergetics

Bioenergetics:

a method of studying and understanding the human personality in terms of the body and its energetic processes. Bioenergetic therapists believe that the body and mind are functionally identical and that repressed emotions affect the body and mind by creating chronic muscular tension and diminishing energy. Through movement, breathwork, psychotherapy and emotional release techniques, the person works to resolve these issues; also called Reichian Therapy.

Tension Dictionary: Alternative Health Dictionary on Jin Shin Do

Jin Shin Do (Jin Shin Do Bodymind Acupressure, The Way of the Compassionate Spirit): Combination of acupressure and Taoist yogic breathing methods developed in the 1970s by psychotherapist Iona Marsaa Teeguarden, author of The Acupressure Way of Health: Jin Shin Do (Japan Publications, Inc., 1978) and The Joy of Feeling: Bodymind Acupressure (Japan Publications, Inc., 1987).

It borrows from Reichian Therapy and moves stagnant energy through the body. According to Jin Shin Do theory, stressful experiences increase tension at certain acupoints. Practitioners decide on which parts of the body are tense. Then, to balance the energy of the body, they hold the tense part with one hand and stimulate a series of acupoints with the other. Jin shin do means way of the compassionate spirit in Japanese.
