 | | | Telescope Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Terror of the Autons - PlotAt a circus, a horsebox materialises out of thin air with the distinctive sound of a TARDIS. The occupant is a thin, bearded man dressed in black who introduces himself as the Master to the circus owner, Rossini, and hypnotises him. Subsequently, the Master and Rossini break into the National Space Museum and steal a translucent plastic polyhedron, one of the energy units used by the Nestene Consciousness in their attempted invasion of Earth. The Master then takes the energy unit to a radio telescope facility, killing the technician on duty with a weapon that shrinks him to doll size. The Master then hooks up the energy unit to the r ...

 | | | Telescope Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Jupiter - OverviewJupiter has been known since ancient times and is visible to the naked eye in the night sky. In 1610, Galileo Galilei discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter using a telescope, the first observation of moons other than Earth's.
Jupiter is 2.5 times more massive than all the other planets combined, so massive that its barycenter with the Sun actually lies above the Sun's surface (1.068 solar radii from the Sun's center). It is 318 times more massive than Earth, with a diameter 11 times that of Earth, and with a volume 1300 times t ...

 | | | Telescope Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Gyroscope - PropertiesA gyroscope exhibits a number of behaviours including precession and nutation. Gyroscopes can be used to construct gyrocompasses which complement or replace magnetic compasses (in ships, aircraft and spacecraft, vehicles in general), to assist in stability (bicycle, Hubble Space Telescope, ships, vehicles in general) or be used as part of an Inertial guidance system. Gyroscopic effects are used in toys like yo-yos and dynabees. Many other rotating devices, such as flywheels, behave gyroscopically although the gyroscopic effect is not used.
The fundamental equation describing the behaviour o ...

 | | | Telescope Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Star catalogue - Full-sky cataloguesBayer and Flamsteed covered only a few thousand stars between them. In theory, full-sky catalogues try to list every star in the sky. There are, however, literally hundreds of millions, even billions of stars resolvable by telescopes, so this is an impossible goal; these kind of catalogs generally try to get every star brighter than a given magnitude.

 | | | Telescope Dictionary: The Four Paths of Hindu YogaThe four main
spiritual paths for God-realisation are Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Raja Yoga and
Jnana Yoga. Karma Yoga is suitable for a man of active temperament, Bhakti Yoga
for a man of devotional temperament, Raja Yoga for a man of mystic temperament,
and Jnana Yoga for a man of rational and philosophical temperament, or a man of
enquiry.
Mantra Yoga,
Laya Yoga or Kundalini Yoga, Lambika Yoga and Hatha Yoga, are other Yogas. Yoga,
really, means union
with God. The practice
of Yoga leads to communion with the Lord. Whatever may be the starting point,
the end reached is the same.

All About Hinduism by Sri Swami Sivananda

 | | | Telescope Dictionary: Make Friends With Your SelfWhen Jesus said: - The kingdom of God is within - what
He meant was that heaven itself would be a disappointment to restless, worldly
people.
If a person has no true joy in his heart, he will not
find true joy outside though he be in heaven itself, and in the company of
angels. Heaven must be experienced right here, right now, within ourselves if
we are to experience it ever.

 | | | Telescope Dictionary: The
Hymns of Dirghatamas in the Rig VedaThe Hymns of Dirghatamas in the Rig
Veda
Some scholars have claimed that the
Babylonians invented the zodiac of 360 degrees around 700 BCE, perhaps even
earlier. Many claim that India received the knowledge of the zodiac from
Babylonia or even later from Greece. However, as old as the Rig Veda, the
oldest Vedic text, there are clear references to a chakra or wheel of 360
spokes placed in the sky. The number 360 and its related numbers like 12, 24,
36, 48, 60, 72, 108, 432 and 720 occur commonly in Vedic symbolism. It is in the
hymns of the great Rishi Dirghatamas (RV I.140 - 164) that we have the clearest
such references.

 | | | Telescope Dictionary: Encyclopedia II - Goldfish - BehaviourIt is often said that goldfish have a memory span of only a few seconds, but this is not entirely true. Goldfish have what could be called a selective memory; that is to say, they have some kind of consciousness of what has happened on previous occasions, but may not be sure exactly what it was. They can learn to eat from a certain ring inside their tank, or even from their caretaker's hand, because they will remember that there is something good in t ...
