taxonomy: Encyclopedia II - Linnaean taxonomy - Nomenclature

A strength of Linnaean taxonomy is that it can be used to develop a simple and practical system for organizing the different kinds of living organisms. The most important aspect of this is the general use of binomial nomenclature, the combination of a genus name and a specific epithet ("sapiens" in the example above), to uniquely identify each species of organism. In the example, humankind is uniquely identified by the binomial Homo sapiens. No other species of animal can have this binomial. In this way, every species is given a uniqu ...

taxonomy: Encyclopedia II - Taxonomy - Abstraction and hierarchy

Taxonomies are frequently hierarchical in structure. However taxonomy may also refer to relationship schemes other than hierarchies, such as network structures. Other taxonomies may include single children with multi-parents, for example, "Car" might appear with both parents "Vehicle" and "Steel Mechanisms". A taxonomy might also be a simple organization of objects into groups, or even an alphabetical list. In current usage within "Knowledge Management", taxon ...

taxonomy: Encyclopedia II - Taxonomy - Other uses

Such taxonomies as those analyzed by Durkheim and Lévi-Strauss are sometimes called folk taxonomies to distinguish them from scientific taxonomies that claim to be disembedded from social relations and thus objective and universal. A recent neologism, folksonomy, should not be confused with Folk Taxonomy (though it is obviously a contraction of the two words). Those who support scientific taxonomies have recently criticized folksonomies by dubbing them fauxonomies. The phrase enterprise taxonomy is used in business to describe a very limited form of taxo ...

taxonomy: Encyclopedia II - Taxonomy - Example from anthropology

Taxonomy is a highly relevant topic when discussing primates, in relation to anthropology. There are many similarities between humans and apes that are evident in anatomy, brain structures, genetics, and biochemistry. Physical similarities between humans and apes belong to zoological taxonomy. Taxonomy here means classification of organisms by their resemblance to others. Take for instance humans and apes. "Humans and apes belong to the same taxonomic superfamily, hominoidea, also known as hominoids." Monkeys are not a part of ...

taxonomy: Encyclopedia II - Folksonomy - Folksonomy and folk taxonomy

Folksonomic categories are de novo categories that Internet users invent to express how they make sense of the online world. For this reason, folksonomies should be clearly distinguished from the folk taxonomies studied by anthropologists and linguists. Folk taxonomies are learned, shared, and transmitted classifications of a people's biological surroundings.See also:

taxonomy: Encyclopedia II - Linnaean taxonomy - Later developments

Over time, our understanding of the relationships between living things has changed. The greatest change was the widespread acceptance of evolution as the mechanism of biological diversity and species formation. After this, it became generally understood that classifications ought to reflect the phylogeny of organisms, where each taxon should originate from a single ancestral form. In some systems it is generally encouraged that taxa should b ...

This is the largest subfamily, comprising more than 10,000 species in about 90 to 100 genera. Most are tropical epiphytes (usually with pseudobulbs), but some are terrestrials and even a few saprophytes. All show a unique development of the single anther: it is incumbent forming a right angle with the column axis or pointed backward in many genera. Most have hard pollinia, i.e. a mass of waxy pollen or of coherent pollen grains; pollinia with caudicle and viscidium or without; stigma entire or 3-lobed; rostellum present; 1-locular ovary; leaves: distichous or spiraling Taxono ...
