As of 2005, the President is Mintimer Shaeymiev (Tatar: Mintimer Şäymiev). Official languages are Tatar and Russian. According to the 2002 Russian Federal Law (On Languages of Peoples of the Russian Federation), the official script is Cyrillic. Tatarstan's government as well as human rights groups are strongly opposed to this law.
