Syphilis: Encyclopedia - Syphilis

Syphilis (historically called lues) is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that is caused by a spirochaete bacterium, Treponema pallidum. Syphilis has many alternate names, such as: Miss Siff, the Pox, and has been given many national attributions, e.g. the "French disease" or the "English disease". The route of transmission for syphilis is almost invariably by sexual contact; however, there are examples of direct contact infections (see yaws) and of congenital syphili ...

Syphilis: Encyclopedia II - Syphilis - Stages of syphilis
Different manifestations occur at each stage of the disease. Syphilis - Primary syphilis. Primary syphilis is manifested after an incubation period of 10-90 days (the average is 21 days) with a primary sore. During the initial incubation period, individuals are asymptomatic. The sore, called a chancre, is a firm, painless skin ulceration localized at the point of initial exposure to the bacterium, often on the penis, vagina or rectum. Local lymph node swelling can occur. The primary lesion may persist for 4 to 6 weeks and then heal spontaneously. ...

Congenital syphilis is syphilis present in utero and at birth, and occurs when a child is born to a mother with secondary or tertiary syphilis. Syphilis: Encyclopedia II - Adolf Hitler's medical health - Syphilis

Hitler's tremors and irregular heartbeat during the last years of his life could have been symptoms of tertiary syphilis. Along with another doctor, Morell diagnosed them as such by early 1945 in a joint report to Heinrich Himmler. Some historians have also cited Hitler's discussion of syphilis across fourteen pages of Mein Kampf, which he called a "Jewish disease", leading to speculation he may have had the disease himself, since it may ...

Syphilis: Encyclopedia II - Syphilis - History

There are two schools of thought on the origin of Syphilis: the Colombian and pre-Colombian theses. There are ongoing debates in anthropological and historical fields about the validity of either theory. The pre-Colombian theory holds that syphilis symptoms are described by Hippocrates in Classical Greece in its venereal/tertiary form. Some passages in the Bible could refer to syphilis, especially Exodus 20:5 where the sins of the father are visited unto the third and fourth generation. There are other suspected syphilis findings for ...

The Wassermann test is a complement-fixation antibody test for syphilis, named after the bacteriologist August von Wassermann. A sample of blood or cerebrospinal fluid is taken and introduced to the antigen - a bovine muscle or heart extract containing cardiolipin. Syphilis: Encyclopedia - Arsphenamine

Arsphenamine is a drug that was used to treat syphilis and trypanosomiasis. It was the first modern chemotherapeutic agent. Sahachiro Hata discovered the anti-syphilitic activity of this compound in 1908 in the laboratory of Paul Ehrlich, during a survey of hundreds of newly-synthesized organic arsenical compounds. Ehrlich had theorized that by screening many compounds a drug could be discovered with anti-microbial activity. Ehrlich's team began their search for such a magic bullet among chemical derivatives of the dangerously-toxic d ...

Syphilis: Encyclopedia II - Tuskegee Syphilis Study - Study clinicians

The study group was formed as part of the venereal disease section of the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS). The start of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study is most commonly attributed to Dr. Taliaferro Clark. His initial aim was to follow untreated syphilis in a group of black men for only 6-8 months and then follow up with a treatment phase. Nevertheless Dr. Clark agreed with the deceptive practices suggested by other study members. Clark retired the year after the beginning of the study. Dr. Eugene Dibble was ...

Syphilis: Encyclopedia II - Tuskegee Syphilis Study - Ethical implications

The early ethics of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study may be considered in isolation at study inception. In 1932, treatments for syphilis were relatively ineffective and had severe side effects. It was known that syphilis was particularly prevalent in poor, black communities. The intention of the Study was in part to measure the prevalence of the disease, to study its natural history and the real effectiveness of treatment. Prevailing medical ethics at the time did not have the exacting standards for informed consent currently expected; doctors ro ...

Syphilis: Encyclopedia II - Tuskegee Syphilis Study - Study details

The study was originally started as a study on the incidence of syphilis in the Macon County population. The cohort would be studied for 6 to 8 months, then treated with contemporary treatments (including Salvarsan, mercurial ointments and bismuth) which were somewhat effective, but quite toxic. The initial intentions of the study were to benefit public health in this poor population as evidenced by participation from the Tuskegee Institute, the Black university founded by Booker T. Washington. Its affiliated hospital lent the PHS its medica ...

Syphilis: Encyclopedia II - Tuskegee Syphilis Study - Study termination and aftermath

In 1966, Peter Buxtun, a PHS venereal disease investigator in San Francisco, sent a letter to the director of the Division of Venereal Diseases to express his concerns about the morality of the experiment. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reaffirmed the need to continue the study until completion (until all subjects had died and had been autopsied). To bolster its position, the CDC sought and gained support for the continuation of the study from the local chapters of the National Medical Association (repr ...

Syphilis: Encyclopedia II - History of sex - Sexually transmitted diseases

For much of human history, sexually transmitted diseases have been the scourge of humanity. They raged unchecked through society until the discovery of antibiotics. For a period of about thirty years (in the second half of the twentieth century) their threat subsided. However, due to the free movement of people and the lack of sexual hygiene in certain groups, new diseases resistant to antibiotics quickly spread and at the present time pose a threat to people who are sexually active. Main article: sexually transmitted ...
